After students come home from a tiring day at school, they tend to worry a lot about their homework.

Whether students are working on English or chemistry homework, they are simply working on the assignment in order to get it done, attempting to memorize the concepts for the time being and do not absorb any of the information afterward. Students are wasting their time on insignificant assignments rather than effectively using that time to achieve other accomplishments. According to www.dailymail.com, many parents are concerned that homework is being assigned rather than being used to integrate what teachers are covering in the classroom. In their eyes, if less homework is assigned, students would have much less stress and could focus more on their passions and hobbies.

Homework gets in the way of participating in community service events as well as opportunities for getting a job or being a part of an extra-curricular activity. These responsibilities are important for teenagers to take on because they prepare the teenagers for the “real world.” Without the proper exposure to work that is not school related, students will find themselves lost after they graduate. If homework were no longer given, students would have a lot more time to mature in other fields rather than being educated only on academics.

In spite of the fact that teachers want students to do better on tests and absorb the material that they are teaching, homework is not accomplishing its purpose. Because school is becoming increasingly more competitive and challenging, homework is becoming a setback rather than extra practice. Its removal would benefit the well being of teenagers as well as encourage them to get out in the “real world” and discover themselves instead of staring at a pile of assignments.

56. Students are wasting their time on insignificant homework because___________. A. they are working on it carelessly and hurriedly

B. they attempt to get only part of the information memorized C. they spend too much time doing it without understanding D. they fail to take in the information after finishing it

57. From the third paragraph, we can infer that homework might ___________. A. guarantee students more job opportunities

B. make students lose the sense of responsibilities C. weaken students’ social adaptation ability D. cause students to feel lost after graduation

58. The author insists that homework should be ___________. A. made simpler and easier B. got rid of

C. connected with social activities D. switched over to subject competitions

One day, Soapy Smith and I visited a shelter for badly-treated women located

in a deserted section of the city. No one smiled a greeting, and they appeared uninterested in Soapy. One little girl in particular moved like a wisp (纤弱的小东西) in the background. The staff informed me that she had been there for over a month and had not spoken the entire time. Her mother said she had talked at one time but not in recent memory. I didn’t want to imagine what could have happened to rob this little girl of the natural curiosity and enthusiasm so natural to childhood.

Spreading a blanket on the floor, I sat down and put Soapy on the blanket. As the silent child circled past me, I told the group that Soapy would come to talk to them if they sat on his blanket. Several children did this, including the silent girl. She sat rigidly at the edge of the blanket, legs held stiffly out straight in front of her. She was staring hard at Soapy. It appeared that he kept making eye contact with her. She didn’t reach out to him or encourage him in any way. Rather she sat tensely, just staring.

Finally Soapy came to a stop about two inches from her. He quietly reached out and laid his chin on her knee. I was astonished. While a common behavior for dogs, this is not a behavior exhibited by rabbits, especially not by this rabbit.

The child did not reach out to touch Soapy. Instead, she slowly leaned toward him. When her face was within inches of his, she carefully reached out and circled him with her arms. So softly that no one in the room could hear, she began to talk. Folded around the rabbit, she pillowed her head on his back and whispered to him. Soapy remained motionless.

I looked up and noticed that the shelter workers had stopped talking. Every adult in the room froze in place. Time seemed to have stopped.

The little girl reappeared when I was preparing to leave. She reached her hands out and looked me directly in the eye. I held Soapy out to her. She wrapped him in a big hug and pressed her face against him. Suspended (悬挂) from my hands as he was, I was concerned that he would begin to struggle. Instead he reached out his head again and laid it on the child’s shoulder. His breathing slowed and he closed his eyes. As quickly as it happened, the little girl released her hug and stepped back. As she turned away, I thought I saw the beginnings of a faint smile.

The rabbit in his cloud of soft, warm fur had touched something deep in the child — something that had died from too much hard experience. Soapy’s innocence and trust appeared to arouse those very same qualities in the little girl. It seems the language of the heart is simple after all.

59. The little girl didn’t speak any word because ___________. A. she liked staying silent and still B. she had no friends to talk with

C. she had too much hard experience D. the people in the shelter all kept silent

60. What is the correct order of the following events?

a. The little girl gave a faint smile.

b. Soapy reached out and laid his chin on her knee.

c. The little girl carefully reached out and circled him with her arms. d. Soapy’s breathing slowed and he closed his eyes. e. The little girl began to whisper to Soapy.

A. c; b; e; d; a B. b; c; d; e; a C. b; c; e; d; a D. c; b; d; e; a

61. The author’s purpose of writing the passage is to tell us ___________.

A. a moving story about a lonely girl who hasn’t talked for years B. to pay more attention to those children who have been deserted by their parents C. a lot of kind people around us are offering help to those in need D. the heart-to-heart communication between animal and human is powerful 62. The best title for this passage may be ___________.

A. Soapy Smith and A Little Girl B. A Great Surprise

C. The Language of The Heart D. Human Beings and Animals

MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are free, but without tutoring, and are open to anyone, anywhere in the world. The courses are flexible—normally three to five hours of study a week—done at any time, short (5 to 10 weeks) and video-rich. They are also heavily dependent on crowd sourcing: you can discuss

a course with fellow students through online forums, discussion boards and peer review. Students don’t have to finish the courses, pass assessments or do assignments, but, if they do, they get a certification of participation.

The Open University launched FutureLearn, the UK’s answer to US platforms such as Coursera, EdX and Udacity, which have been offering MOOCs from top US universities for the past two years. The response has been incredible, with more than three million people registering worldwide. Meanwhile, in 2012, Edinburgh University became the first non-US institution to join Coursera’s partnership, comprising 13 universities. “We already run 50 online master’s degrees, so this was a logical expansion,” says Professor Jeff Haywood, Edinburgh’s vice-principal. “It’s an investment in teaching methods research. How am I going to teach introductory philosophy to 100,000 people? That’s what I call educational R&D.” He adds “If you look ahead 10 years, you’d expect all students graduating to have taken some online courses, so you’ve got to research that. Our MOOCs are no more in competition with our degrees than a lifelong learning course because they don’t carry credits.”

Cooperation is key, Haywood stresses. It is far better to offer 20-30 courses in your own areas of expertise (专门技能) and let other institutions do likewise. Professor Mike Sharples, FutureLearn’s academic lead, goes further: “We’ve tied

the elements available before into a package of courses offered by leading universities worldwide on a new software platform, with a new way of promoting it and also a new social-learning teaching method. You won’t just receive an exam, but be able to discuss and mark each other’s assignments.”

Bath University, one of more than 20 universities working with FutureLearn, launches its first course, Inside Cancer, next January, and regards MOOCs as a way of breaking down age barriers. “There’s no reason why someone doing GCSEs should not look at our MOOCs and get quite a way through them, or someone at PhD level and beyond,” says Professor Bernie Morley, expert for learning and teaching. 63. MOOCs have these features EXCEPT that ___________. A. MOOCs are free of charge for anyone

B. MOOCs can be adjusted according to people’s learning pace

C. MOOCs provide teachers’ instructions if you have some difficulty D. MOOCs have a platform for learners to share their learning experience 64. The response to FutureLearn has been thought to be unbelievable mainly because _______.

A. all the courses on the platform are available to anyone in the world B. Edinburgh University became the first non-US institution to join it C. the number of people registering in the platform is beyond expectation D. students can get a certification of participation without passing assessments 65. What can be inferred from Professor Bernie Morley in the last paragraph? A. People with various learning levels will probably show interest in MOOCs. B. People at PhD level have already known everything about MOOCs.

C. Inside Cancer will be the most popular course for someone doing GCSEs. D. MOOCs are not so competitive as lifelong learning courses due to the problems of credits.

66. The passage mainly deals with ___________.

A. the various opinions on FutureLearn B. the advantages of online teaching methods

C. the popularity of no-credit courses D. the appearance of a new learning platform

D BETHPAGE, N.Y. — The Dec 5 (2013) broadcast, starring Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer, was a “real experiment.”

It was the first day of camera blocking for a rehearsal (排练) of National Broadcasting Company’s live broadcast of the original stage version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. Inside a Long Island studio, a pop star, a group of kids and a well-known actor were rehearsing scenes on a copy of a grand estate (庄园) in Salzburg, Austria.

As the youngsters ran through So Long, Farewell, a tune they would perform as

the children of Captain von Trapp, True Blood star Stephen Moyer cast as their widower dad, running through lines with Carrie Underwood, who was playing Maria, the bright-eyed novitiate (见习修女) who became the children’s tutor and, eventually, the Captain’s wife. Around the corner, Broadway darling Audra McDonald, winner of five Tony Awards, performed as the Mother Abbess, Maria’s guardian (监护人) . Fellow Tony winners Laura Benanti and Christian Borle — the Captain’s charming companion, Elsa, and their buddy Max — were just outside the studio.

This The Sound of Music would mark the first time that a well-known Broadway musical had been performed live since a 1955 production of Peter Pan starring Mary Martin, who played Broadway’s original Maria. Another Rodgers and Hammerstein’s show, Cinderella, was written for the small screen, where it was performed live in 1957 — starring the young Julie Andrews, who later played Maria in the screen adaptation of The Sound of Music.

When choosing their cast, the producers were cautious about “using movie people who are used to performing take after take”. “Moyer has a musical theater background,” the producer Craig Zadan noted, “ and Underwood has done a million live concerts.”

Still, Zadan said, “There is a fear factor. There won’t be auto-tuning here; if someone hits a bad note, you’re going to hear it. Someone could make a mistake or forget lyrics (歌词) . We’re throwing them in front of a national audience, and anything may happen.

Moyer admitted, “There’s no way not to feel the pressure. We’ve still got two weeks to go, and we’re in good shape — we all know what we’re doing. But, that doesn’t mean that things won’t go wrong, because they will. If I make a mistake, so be it (顺其自然) . That’s the challenge and the thrill of live theater.” 67. The “real experiment” in Paragraph 1 refers to .

A. the actors and actresses working with each other for the first time B. the experiment in the Long Island studio C. performing the musical live in the theater D. the updated adaptation of the original musical

68. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Broadway’s original Marie was played by Julie Andrews. B. There were many famous stars in the live show. C. Stephen Moyer was inexperienced in musicals.

D. Cinderella was another live performance produced by Craig Zadan.

69. According to Zadan, his worries about the live show lie in the possibility

of .

A. unexpected problems on stage B. audiences’ doubtful attitudes

C. not preparing enough tickets D. actors and actresses’ lack of

experience

70. How does Stephen Moyer feel about the first performance?

A. Nervous but optimistic. B. Satisfied but cautious. C. Relaxed but doubtful. D. Puzzled but enthusiastic.

First person and third person are the two narrative(叙事) styles. Your story narrative is the point of view you use to tell your story to your audience. A point of view includes the perspective of the audience, availability of information and various clues you place in each scene that inform your audience about the events in your story. You can use a careful narrative to draw your audience into your story and keep them focused on your storyline until your final conclusion.

The audience accept that they are reading or watching a story through a particular point of view. A critical audience will even look at your story through that point of view in your story on purpose. You may include your audience into the story as observers, third person narrative, or place them into the mind of one of your characters, first person narrative. Your choice of narrative determines how you reveal information to your audience, whether they see certain elements of your story as observers, or whether they are forced to wait and understand those elements later, as a character in your story does.

A story contains several different thought processes, including one for each character and another for your audience. Your narrative determines how your audience gather information about the thought process of your characters. For instance, you may introduce a character in your story who already has a strongly negative opinion about another character, based on some past experience. Your audience understand that information that character adds to your story should be suspect, leaving your audience wondering if the character’s information is reliable, or based on their preconceived (事先形成的) impression of the other character.

A storyline reveal is a moment when your audience learn a fact about your story. These include any number of situations, based on your own type of story. Your narrative determines how your audience learn about these facts, and in which order. As an example, if your story is a mystery, your main character may learn that one suspect was out of town when the event occurred, but they only learn this information late in your story, restricting your audience from knowing the reveal until later in your story. This information is a storyline reveal, allowing your audience to limit their suspect list, but only after they may come to believe that your suspect was guilty.

Your ending is a process of reveals, marked by a final understanding about your plot. Your goal is to guide your audience to the ending, through specific storyline reveals. Your narrative allows you to restrict these reveals until you are ready for your audience to know them, building the feeling of tension or worry, and allowing your audience to wonder about your conclusion. Why is narrative important to the audience? ◇You use your point of view to tell your audience a story, which is (72) _______ to as story narrative. Possible version: The phenomenon of waste can be seen in our daily life. As is shown in the picture,

when students have dinner in the school canteen, they throw so much left-over food into the waste collector, which upsets the teachers and workers.

This scene reminds me of similar problems around us. It is not uncommon to see things go to waste in schools. Some students do not turn off the lights when they leave the classroom, others leave the water running after using it, and still others throw away their pens, tapes or even notebooks just because they don’t like them. Such behavior will only contribute to students forming bad habits. To avoid wasting food at school, we should first of all realize the significance of saving and be aware of our own misdoings. Then, we need to take action and be careful with the things we eat or use in our daily life. Also,we should persuade others not to waste things. (151 words)

W: Hi. Can I just have a bag of chips and a soda, please?

M: Sorry, but I’m all out of chips at the moment. Are you sure you don’t want a hot dog?

W: They look good, and I know this is a hot dog stand and everything, but I’m supposed to meet a friend for dinner soon, so…

M: Listen, madam, if you’ve never had one of my hot dogs, you don’t know what you’re missing.

W: Oh, I’ve had your hot dogs before, and they’re great, but I think I’ll just take a Diet Coke for now.

M: All right. That’ll be 75 cents, please.

W: Here you are. Keep the change. I’ll be back tomorrow afternoon for one of those hot dogs! 【Text 7】

W: Are you seeing anyone? M: What did you say?

W: I asked if you have a girlfriend. So, do you?

M: Uh, why do you want to know? Are you asking me out on a date?

W: No! Of course not. If you aren’t seeing anyone right now, I have a friend I think you should meet.

M: Oh, great! Just what I need—another blind date!

W: Well, if you’re going to be like that, then we can just forget the whole thing. I just thought that you two might hit it off. Never mind…

M: Wait, wait… Sorry. It’s just that my brother set me up with someone last week, and it was terrible. But you have pretty good taste. Tell me about her. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to at least meet up with her, especially if you think we’d get along.

W: Great! Let’s go grab a beer, and I’ll tell you all about her. 【Text 8】

M: Clifton Police Station. Can I help you?

W: Yes. It’s about my daughter Mary. She went to school this morning, but I know she never made it there. She hasn’t come back home, and it’s already 11

o’clock…

M: Just a moment, Mrs….?

W: Mrs. Jane Smith. I live at 34 Bath Road.

M: Thank you. Now, Mrs. Smith, can you tell me exactly what happened?

W: Well, Mary left home this morning at about 9:00. Her teacher called me up about an hour ago and asked if Mary was sick. I said, “No, of course not. Why?” You can imagine what she said next…

M: I see. I just need to get a few details from you. How old is Mary?

W: She is six.

M: And what does she look like?

W: Well, she is slim and has long dark hair. I guess she is of medium height. She is wearing a white short-sleeved blouse, a pink and white skirt, long stockings, and black shoes.

M: Just a minute, let me write all that down… All right, Mrs. Smith, we’re going to get right on this. We’ll find your daughter, I promise. I’ll give you a call as soon as we get any information, OK? 【Text 9】

M: I can’t believe it. My apartment building is turning off the hot water for two months! This will be the third time this year!

W: Oh, that’s terrible. Did they say why they are turning it off?

M: Yup. This time, they said it was because of construction on a nearby street. However, I haven’t seen any construction in our neighborhood, and even if there were something going on, why would that affect our water for two whole months?! It’s ridiculous!

W: It sounds like they are lying, doesn’t it?

M: Yeah. I am fed up with their lies and excuses! I called my landlord after I saw this latest notice. She knew nothing about it! She’s the owner and they never informed her of what was happening in the building.

W: Can she do anything about it?

M: She said she’d call me back after she talks with the management company, and she will buy and install a gas water heater in one of the bathrooms. At least I can take a hot shower. She can’t do anything about not having hot water in the kitchen, though.

W: Well, that’s something, at least.

M: It definitely makes a difference in my day. I just can’t be ready for work if I haven’t had a shower in the morning. 【Text 10】

Jeremy, I’m sure you don’t remember, but when you were about 7 months old, your father and I took you on a trip throughout Mexico. We started in the northwest

of the country, and we took buses from city to city. First, we stayed close to the coast and visited little fishing villages. Then we headed inland, to Mexico City. We stayed there for several days because it was so fascinating. I remember the main square in the city center. On the north side of it was a huge church, and on the east side was the National Palace. We walked across the large plaza many times during our stay, and I especially liked going there at night. The street carts sold everything from homemade potato chips to corn. The place in Mexico City that I liked most was the outdoor market, where I could watch people for hours and never get bored.
