Passage 1
Many scientists today are convinced that life exists elsewhere in the universe-life probably 要 much like that on our own planet. They reason in the following ways.
As far as astronomers can determine, the entire universe is built of the same matter. They 答 have no reason to doubt that matter obeys the same laws in every part of the universe. Therefore, it is reasonable to guess other stars, with their own planets, were born in the same way as our own solar system. What we know of life on earth suggests that life will arise wherever proper 题 conditions exist.
Life requires the right amount and kind of atmosphere. This eliminates all those planets in the universe that are not about the same size and weight as the truth. A smaller planet, would lose its atmosphere, a larger one would hold too much of it.
Life also requires a steady supply of heat and light. This eliminates double stars, or stars that flare up suddenly. Only single stars that are steady sources of heat and light like our sun would qualify.
Finally, life could evolve only if the planet is just the right distance from its sun. with a weaker sun than our own, the planet would have to be closer to it. With a stronger sun, it would have to be farther away.
If we suppose that every star in the universe has a family of planets, then how many planets

their planets: they are either too far from or too close to their suns. Then eliminate most of planets which are not the same size and weight as the earth. Finally, remember that the proper conditions do not necessarily mean that life actually does exist on a planet. It may not have begun yet, or it may have already died out.
This process of elimination seems to leave very few planets on which earthlike life might be found. However, even if life could exist on only one planet in a million, there are so many billions if planets that this would still leave a vast number on which life could exist.

Passage 2
American‟s high-school dropout rate is at an all-time low. College enrollment has gone up as adults resume their educations part-time. Corporations are spending an estimated $30 billions a year on courses to make workers more competitive. Our educational statistics don‟t even

measure the achievements in our more than 8,000 trade schools.
A survey of East Asian scholars ranked universities of the world, where engineers, doctors, biologists and managers are trained. Of the top 12 schools, eight were in the United States. No wonder more than 360,000 foreign students are in U.S. universities. That‟s crude proof of the value of American education.
Another encouraging development is the headway being made by women and blacks--despite the large numbers of both who are still in poverty. Women are moving into better jobs with a speed that must surprise even the most vigorous feminists. Their median weekly earnings now stand at 70 percent of the median earnings of men, considerably higher than the 63 percent of ten years ago. Young women (16 to 24 years old ) now have earnings that are 80 to 90 percent of those of comparatively aged men. Why should we think the next generation of working women will be less successful than this one?
As for blacks, in the last decade their life expectancy has gone up, and infant mortality has lowered. There were a half million black college graduates in the United States in 1970 and one million in 1980. There are two million today. In 1988 there were more than 900,000 black families, comprising about 3.2 million people, with annual incomes higher than $50,000--twice the number in 1918, measure in constant dollars. The black middle class is here to stay. It is said the big issue of the 90s will be the environment. Should that happen, it will show just how remarkable our age is. For environmentalism is a crisis engendered by people living better. It is also a crisis that can be dealt with. In America, the environment, by many measures, is healthier than it was.

Passage 3
Sustainable development: China’s choice for the 21st century What will the earth look like in the 21st century? As acid rain, ozone depletion, and soil erosion destroy the earth‟s environment and as the negative effects of economic development, such as decreased forest coverage, over-exploitation of marine resources and shrinking farmland become more obvious, people have grown concerned about their future living space.
In 1987, Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland introduced the term „sustainable development‟ in her report entitled Our Common Future to the World Environment and Development Council. The United Nations Environment and Development Conference held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992, accepted the new term and passed the framework document called „Agenda 21‟. The conference was a milestone and marked a shift from traditional development and life styles to the start of sustained development in the global economy. It proved that development and environmental protection had finally achieved equal importance.
It is universally acknowledged that the problem of environmental protection and improvement will be solved only when it is considered in the context of development. At that very conference, Chinese Premier Li Peng, on behalf of the Chinese government, vowed China would seriously fulfill its international obligations. Two years later, in July 1994. China enacted Agenda 21 of China and the Plan for Priority Projects in China’s Agenda 21. It is of great international and historic significance for China, with the world‟s largest population and its long history, to carry out a strategy of sustained development, remarked Maurice Strong, Secretary General of the UN Environment and Development Conference.
DATA The Key Points of Agenda 21 of China Following are the main points of the Agenda.

Madame Tussaud was born in Strasbourg in 1761. Her name was Marie Grosholtz. Her mother became housekeeper to a doctor in Switzerland called Dr Philippe Curtius. It was this man who taught Marie how to make wax models. When Dr Curtius moved to Paris, he took Marie and her mother with him. In Paris, the doctor and Marie made wax models of famous people and he opened a waxworks museum. And then, when he died, in 1794, Marie took over the waxworks exhibition. In 1795, Marie married Francois Tussaud, a French engineer, but after only seven years she left him and moved to England with her older son. Her younger son joined them later. She never went back to her husband or to France. For 33 years, Madame Tussaud took her exhibition around the British isles. Then, in 1835, she found a permanent „home‟ for the waxworks in Baker Street, in London. In 1850, Madame Tussaud died. She was eighty-nine. Her sons inherited the business and, in 1884, her grandsons moved the exhibition to Marylebone Road, where it still is today. Now, more than two and a half million people from all over the world visit Madame Tussaud‟s every year. It‟s the most popular tourist attraction in Great Britain. 《英语阅读(2)》试题 第6页(共9页)

So you want to be a pop star?
1 So you dream of becoming a pop star, do you? What is the best way of getting a contract
with a record company—sending in a demonstration tape( “sending a demo”), or doing concerts (“gigging”)?
2 This question is like asking which came first, the chicken, or the egg? According to Eddie Lee, drummer with a group called Cool Shadows, in Shanghai, both demos and gigging are equally important. “Playing in gigs gives you good practise,” he asked, “and there is just a chance—a small one—that someone from a recording company might be there to hear you. But you can‟t rely on that: you have to send in demos too—that‟s the only way you can hope a top executive might hear your music.”
3 But Tony Ho, who has played in several different bands in Guangzhou, believes that playing in gigs is very important. “You never know when an agent for a company is likely to turn up,” he says. “They hear your music, and they see you in action; if they like both, then you‟re in with a chance.” So what about demos? “Most of them are just thrown away,” he says. “They get hundreds of demos every year. There‟s no way they can listen to all of them!”
4 Tammy Liu plays in all-girl group in Beijing. “It‟s not what you know—or what you do; it‟s who you know!” she says. “It‟s all about guanxi. Some of the stuff that gets released is

rubbish—you can be sure that the group is related to someone big in the recording studio!” 5 We asked a senior executive in the music business in London about this. “Look, music is big business,” he said. “No company is going to sign on people with no talent, just because they are the chairman‟s son-in-law!” So what is his advice?
6 “Most record companies are looking for two things—talent, and enthusiasm. The best way to get noticed by a record company is by signing up with a good management agency. A good agency has got all the right contacts in the music industry. That‟s what the Spice Girls did. They would never have succeeded by sending in a demo on cassette!”
7 A good manager has the respect of management agencies, and can save a group of wannabes a lot of time. But you still have to make good music—music that people want to listen to. And you need to get the right equipment—good instruments, and so on—and a good presentation. That means you must not just sound right—you must look right, and have a good relationship with your audience.
8 Even then, your chances of success are small. Everyone in the business is sure of one thing; don‟t give up your studies, and don‟t give up your job, if you have one. Even if you succeed, the chances of your lasting a long time are very small!
Questions 31-40 are based on passage 5
31. This text is about the best way of getting a contract with a recording company. 32. One method is by sending in a demonstration tape.
33. Another method is by inviting someone from the company to a gig, or concert. 34. Tony Ho thinks that demonstration tapes are a waste of time.
35. Tammy Liu says it‟s not who you know that matters—it‟s what you know.
36. The man in London said that you must have talent and enthusiasm to get accepted by a recording company.
37. He thinks that finding a good music agency is important.
38. But the most important thing is to have a good relationship with your agency.
39. A wannabe pop-star must sound right, must look right, and must have a good relationship with the audience.
40. Even a successful pop-star may not last long, so study is also important. 得 分 评卷人 Part IV Short Answers(每小题4分,共20分)

Passage 6
While radio broadcasting was still in its early stage the wonder of television was already being developed. The first step towards its invention was taken in 1873 but the person responsible for developing it was John Logie Baird. In 1926 he gave the first demonstration of a television picture.
As a home entertainment, television rapidly became more popular than any other form. A news broadcast became more immediate when people could actually see the scene in question and the movements of the figures. Films could also be available. One of the advantages of travel programmes was the glimpse of far-away places which many viewers would not otherwise have seen. Though much of the entertainment was of a popular kind like competitions, some 密 remarkable cultural programmes were also broadcast. Just as with radio in earlier days, a group of actors and actresses became familiar in every household. One of the most popular programmes on television was sport and an interesting result of the television broadcast was the increased 封 attendance at the actual events. How far this was due to a growth interest in the game and how far out of the people‟s desire to appear on the screen is not clear. 线
