Many of us may have experienced the pleasant surprise of seeing recommended songs after you listen to certain songs on a music app. When we open shopping websites, we are more likely to see things on the home page that we might want to buy.

This is based on data. Data is no longer only about numbers, but information from almost every aspect of our lives; our location, shopping habits and interests. All of this is called “big data.”

In December, President Xi JInping called for China to speed up its big data strategy in order to better serve social and economic development and improve people’s lives, the Xinhua News Agency reported. He also asked for greater use of big data in areas like education, social security and transportation.

The past few years have seen big data being used more often in China. The role it plays in tourism is just one example. The data travelers share online is providing the tourism industry with a lot of information about the country’s scenic areas. After the data is analyzed, different scenic areas can create their own online profiles for other travelers to see. The profiles not only show travelers’ reviews but also tell the scenic areas which services need to be improved.

Big data is also an important growth engine for economic development. With an annual growth rate of 30 percent, sales of big data services and products in China will reach 1 trillion yuan yearly by 2020, China News Service reported. 53. What is “big data”? A. Songs and shopping lists B. Technologies and habits

We may pass by empty phone booths on the streets every day. But how many people have used them, let’s say, in the past five years?

Today almost everyone has a cell phone. Phone booths seem to have become useless. But

Shanghai is trying to bring new life to the old phone booths.

Shanghai will make changes to 263 phone booths in Xuhui District. The Library Booth is one of the six new types of booths, offering 60 books for people to borrow and read. Another type allows users to listen to audio books and even record their own voices.

Some other countries have also been trying to help phone booths stay useful. The UK company British Telecom allows people to rent booths. They can change the booths however they like. Since 2009, more than 1500 phone boots have been turned into flower shops, mini-cafes and even shower rooms, according to the Sina News. The British love their red phone booths. They have been a part of the country’s identity since the 1930s.

Brazil chose to make phone booths more beautiful to watch. Sao Paulo paired 100 artists with 100 phone booths. Some artists painted on the booths. Some others made them Sculptures --- one was shaped like a brain and another wore a pair of shoes.

Phone booths are finding creative ways to survive. Will they succeed? Only time will tell. 57. How many books will each library booth in Shanghai offer? A. 263 B. 60 C. 44 D. 1500 58. For thousands of years, people have used plants to make medicine. They used different parts

of the plants--- the roots, the leaves, the flowers, and the bark. Today, doctors have rediscovered more medicinal values of some plants. Let’s look at some examples.

Foxglove is a common plant. People have used it to make the heart slow down. Recently, scientists have developed another drug from it. This new drug helps prevent other heart problems.

In some areas, malaria has been a problem. Scientists have learned that the bark of a South American tree, the cinchona, can be made into a drug to prevent malaria. For a long time, the Chinese have known that a special plant, wormwood, can also fight malaria. Scientists have been working with it to develop new drugs against malaria.

In Germany, some scientists studied garlic (大蒜) for four years. They found that it helps prevent the build-up of plaque (血小板) because too much plaque is bad for health. This very common plant continues to be studied.

As we know, there are about 250,000 kinds of flowering plants in the world. Scientists have only studied little more than one percent of plants for their medicinal value. Maybe medicines for AIDS and cancer will be made from the other 99 percent.
