摘要：An apparatus is arranged to perform contrast enhancement for one or morecolor images. The apparatus comprises an image source (101) which provides the colorimage having color values for image areas, where each image area may specificallycorrespond to a pixel. A contrast enhancement processor (103) performs contrastenhancement on the color image by modifying a luminance characteristic for at leastsome image areas in response to the color value for the image area. The contrastenhancement processor (103) may specifically generate compensated luminance valuesfor pixels by normalizing luminance values relative to a nominal luminance value for thecolor of the pixels. A luminance contrast enhancement is then performed on the

compensated luminance values. The approach may allow improved image quality and mayin particular reduce introduction of unnatural shadowing effects due to color variations.
