Dogs Trained to Find Endangered Animals
Many dogs are very hard-working animals. They have been helping people for thousands of years. Dogs protect our homes. They help people with disabilities. They team up with rescue(营救)workers in search-and-rescue operations. And now, dogs can add another job to their rescues--- finding endangered animals! The official title for this kind of work is conservation detection dog.
Luke Edwards is a dog owner and trainer. He is training two border collies(边境牧羊犬), named Rubble and Uda, to become conservation detection dogs.He says that border collies are good for this kind of work because they have a great sense of smell. The dogs also have great stamina--- the mental and physical strength to work long hours.
Recently, the dogs went on their most difficult job yet--- finding the Baw Baw frog. This frog is one of Australia’s most endangered animals.
The work is difficult mainly because of the search area. Just to get to the place where the frogs live, the dogs and their trainers must walk far distance through alpine(高山)forests. It is difficult but important work.
A deadly fungus(真菌)has killed nearly all of Australia’s Baw Baw frogs. In fact, scientists say these creatures could disappear in the next five to ten years. Zoos Victoria is a group set up to protect wildlife. Conservation experts there say that since 1980 the deadly fungus has killed off 98 percent of the Baw Baw frogs. So, Zoos Victoria is trying to save the frogs. Experts there raise them and have them reproduce. They call it their captive breeding (繁殖)program. 21. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1?

Scientists say that they have discovered three new species(种类) of fish in one of the deepest places on Earth.
All the three species were found in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Chile and Peru. They were deep in the Atacama Trench--- 7500 meters below the surface.
Researchers from Britain’s Newcastle University say the new species have been given temporary(暂时的)names based on their coloring. They are known as “ the pink, the blue and the purple Atacama Snailfish(狮子鱼)”.
The three snailfish species are different from most other fish. Their unusual bodies are built to deal with the cold water and extreme pressure deep in the ocean.
All three are small and translucent, meaning light can pass through their skin. They also have no scales(鳞片) on the skin for protection.
Other scientists say the “blue” Atacama Snailfish appear to be a rare “winged” snailfish. But it has long fin(鳍)and big head similar to the Ethereal Snailfish off the coast of Mariana Islands.
The “pink” is closer in appearance to the Mariana Snailfish, a species found in the deepest part of Mariana Trench on the other side of the Pacific Ocean.
Third species is a small purple snailfish. It is similar to the fish living at the depth of 3500 meters. One of the purple snailfish, about 9 centimeters long, was brought to the surface for further study.
From the video shot by the scientists of Newcastle University, Linley said,” There is something about the snailfish that allows them to adapt to(适应)living very deep. Beyond the reach of other fish they are free of competitors and predators(捕食者).

Hand-washing seems pretty simple, but a recent study shows that 97% of the time, we’re still doing it wrong--- which can lead to contamination(污染) of food surfaces and result in foodborne(食物传播的)illness.
The study from the USE department of Agriculture shows most consumers failed to wash their hands and rub with soap for 20 seconds. That’s the amount of time recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which says that washing for shorter periods means fewer germs are removed. “Numerous participants also didn’t try their hands with a clean towel. So what’s the right way to wash hands?
The CDC has some tips, starting with an obvious step: wetting hands with clean, running water.
Step2: After wetting hands with water, turn off the tap and apply soap.
Step3: Lather(起泡沫)hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of hands, between fingers, and under fingernails
Step4: Scrub hands for at least 20 seconds. (Sing \"The Alphabet Song once” or \"Happy Birthday\" twice. )
Step5: Rinse(冲洗) hands well under clean, running water. Step 6: Dry hands with a clean towel,
A separate study released last month found 49 of 100 towels tested showed growth of bacteria normally found in or on the human body. The bacteria were more likely to be found on wet towels and towels used for more than one purpose.
Washing hands correctly is one of the easiest ways to avoid foodborne illnesses, which makes 48 million Americans sick each year. That results in roughly 128.000 hopitalizations and 3000 deaths.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighbourhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(紧盯着他们).
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a cobbler to get them repaired, but he lost them on the way back home. It was not until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and they decided to share Ali's running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school , she would rush back and give them to Ali ,whose lessons began in the afternoon. Ali could then run to his school. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was often given warnings by the school.
One day Ali heard about a long-distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a pair of new shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win the new shoes for her.
The day of the race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted, he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as he neared the finishing line, another runner collided(碰撞)with him from behind and he fell down. 注意:1. 所续写短文的词数为150左右;
