I became a comic ( 喜剧演员) at 12:45 yesterday afternoon when I walked onto a club stage. Everyone had exactly two minute to perform.
I am not a comic, have never appeared onstage, am nervous before many people, and have no social skills. But I have written some funny things in the newspapers, and I figured that if you can write funny, you can be funny. That was my first mistake.
Good comics improve their acts over months if not years, practicing before bathroom mirrors or their friends. I developed the key skill the morning I went on. I also brought a box of beads (珠子), because I figured they could be useful.
For the first few seconds, I was simply staring forward, mouth open, expressing the concept: “Uuungh”.
Finally I said, “This is my first performance as a comic. It’s a kind of a special moment for me. I’d like to take this opportunity to say something to my mother, who was an inspiration to me throughout my life. My mother passed away a few years ago, but I feel she is still alive with me. All the time, wherever I go, I feel her presence, day in and day out. So I would like to say this to her: LEAVE ME ALONE, MA!”
Some audience(观众) actually laughed.
Then I said, “Anyway, this really is my first time onstage. I’m really nervous because I am not that funny. A long time ago a Greek guy named Demosthenes had the same problem I have, and he became a great speaker by sticking pebbles(鹅卵石) in his mouth. So I thought I would (and I began putting the beads in my mouth) try that. See, if you can talk through the pebbles (now I was putting more beads in) you can learn to talk better and wfnm fmuff frmphm grphnm…” More laughter.
I looked at my watch, said something that might have sounded like “ My time is up,” and left to somewhat spirited applause(掌声). What the audience failed to know was that I was choking on a bead near my throat.

If you have been stared at, laughed at on the street and called “the ugliest person in the world”, what are you going to do? Lizzie Velasquez, from Austin, Texas, was born without adipose tissue(脂肪组织), which means that she has no body fat. Although she eats up to 60 small meals a day, this 23-year-old girl remains only 27 kilograms or so.
Lizzie knows well the feeling of being bullied. One of her eyes has become blind, and her appearance can be surprising at first sight. People often stare, make rude comments or send unkind e-mails. Now she has the courage to speak out. She is honest about the pain it causes her, though she refuses to let anything stop her. In the video she made in 2010, she says:
I’m going to be honest. It was really hard for me to look in the mirror and accept who I was. I know you’ve heard time and time again people saying, “Be proud of who you are. Be yourself.” But you’re probably thinking, “Why am I going to be myself if I’m just going to be made fun of?” I know the feeling of being called “the ugliest woman in the world”, but now I learn to accept that and try to show people how beautiful I am inside.
In her book Be Beautiful, Be You, Lizzie shares advice on being unique, how to make and keep good friends and how to find out the beauty inside of someone. Lizzie has now written a second book about her struggle to be accepted. She is surely a woman on the rise. 55. What do we know about Lizzie Velasquez? A. Her appearance has made her proud. B. In 1985, a lionfish was caught off the coast of Florida. Now they can be found not only in the Atlantic Ocean but also in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. And they are continuing to move south. Lionfish are native to the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. So how did they end up in the Atlantic? Scientists believe some pet owners abandoned their unwanted lionfish and pour them into the sea. Little did they know the trouble their action would cause.
The Atlantic Ocean turned out to be a comfortable home for lionfish. Their venomous spine
(毒刺) protect them from sharks and other fish. Female lionfish can spawn(产卵) every few days, producing as many as 2 million eggs per year. Other big fish would have competed with lionfish for food. But overfishing has removed many of these large fish. As a result, the fish have eaten so much that they have grown to be more than three times the size of their cousins in the Pacific Oceans. “They eat mostly fish,” says Stephanie Green, a scientist at Oregon State University.
All that eating has caused great changes. Scientists have found that when lionfish are present somewhere, many other fish, which are small enough for them to eat, disappear. Some of the fish they eat are greatly missing in their habitats. For example, parrotfish eat certain plants off coral(珊瑚), which allows corals to grow better. But they are now disappearing due to lionfish. Scientists say lionfish are here to stay. But there are ways to deal with the problem. The key, says Green, is to keep lionfish numbers in check. In Florida, divers can now go through a special training program and get certified(授予合格证书) to catch lionfish in areas where fishing is not usually allowed. And a number of restaurants have added the fish to menu. “It’s going to be a long-term battle, but we have reason to believe the missing sea species will come back some day,” says Green.
59. According to Paragraph 1, some pet owners _____________. A. caught a lionfish off the coast of Florida
B. threw their lionfish into the sea irresponsibly C. thought lionfish should be protected
D. found a lot of lionfish in the Atlantic Ocean 60. What can we learn about lionfish?
A. Its population is growing very quickly. B. All of them are almost the same size. C. They eat other fish and even sharks.
D. Most of them have gathered in the Atlantic Ocean.
61. Parrotfish were mentioned to show Lionfish’s_____________. A. loneliness B. ugliness C. weakness D. harmfulness 62. What is Stephanie Green’s attitude towards the battle against lionfish? A. She is doubtful about it. B. She is hopeful of it. C. She is worried about it. D. She is tired of it.

Decision-thinking is not unlike poker(扑克牌)---it often matters not only what you think, but also what others think you think and what you think they think you think. The mental process(过程) is similar. Naturally, this card game has often been of considerable interest to people who are, by any standards, good thinkers.
The great mathematician John von Neumann was one of the founders of game theory. In particular, he showed that all games fall into two classes: there are what he called games of
橡皮网 - 正确地成长(www.xiangpi.com)
“perfect information”, games like chess(国际象棋) where the players can’t hide anything or play tricks; they don’t win by chance, but by means of logic and skills. Then there are games of “imperfect information”, like poker, in which it is impossible to know in advance (ahead of time) that one course of action is better than another.
One mistaken idea about business is that it can be treated as a game of perfect information. Quite the reverse, business, politics, life itself are games which we must normally play with very imperfect information. Business decisions are often made with many unknown and unknowable factors(因素), which would even puzzle the best poker players. But few business people find it comfortable to admit that they are taking a chance, and many still prefer to believe that they are playing chess, not poker.
63. The subject discussed in this text is _____________. A. the difference between poker and chess B. the process of reaching decisions
C. the secret of making good business plans D. the value of information in winning games
64. An important factor in a game of imperfect information is _____________. A. luck B. rules C. time D. ideas 65. Which of the following can be used in place of “Quite the reverse”? A. Quite right. B. Most unlikely. C. Just the opposite. D. True enough. 66. In the writer’s opinion, when making business decisions one should _____________. A. regard business as a game of chess
B. put perfect information before imperfect information C. accept the existence of unknown factors D. mix known and unknown factors

Finland, a European country of just 5.3 million people, has been winning a lot of honor for its students’ high scores on recent PISA (Program for International Students Assessment) tests. With ideas of imitating Finland’s surprising achievement back home, a lot of groups of educators from the United States have visited this country over the past few years. However, what the American visitors found was somewhat astonishing.
A major surprise for them is the degree of respect and trust teachers are given in Finland. Julie Walker, a board member of the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, compared it to the social position that doctors enjoy in the United States. Walker visited Finland with a delegation(代表团) from the Consortium of School Networking(CoSN). One of the reasons for that great respect is how hard it is to become a teacher in Finland. Only one of eight applicants for teacher education programs is accepted; each teacher has a master’s degree. “The best and the brightest want to become teachers in Finland,” says Keith Krueger, CoSN’s CEO.
Another aspect that amazed the visitor is all students’ fluency with languages. “Nearly every student can communicate in English as well as in their native tongue. They are far ahead in the game on the language side,” says the National School Boards Association’s Ann Flynn, who made the trip with CoSN. Bryan Luizzi, principal of Brookfield High School in Connecticut, agreed. He visited the country this year with a Connecticut delegation from Education Connection. Although Finnish children don’t start formal schooling until the age of 7, by the end of their first year, they all know how to read and write, he says.
橡皮网 - 正确地成长(www.xiangpi.com)
“There are a lot of lessons to be learned,” says Krueger. Finland’s non-competitive philosophy, for example, flies in the face of America’s high-competition regulations. In Finland, schools aren’t ranked against each other, teachers don’t face formal reviews, and students aren’t under considerable stress to get into college. Krueger says the care Finland has taken to create a “good learning environment” shouldn’t be lost on policy makers in the United States. “Our strong interest in testing doesn’t mean we are doing better.”
67. Why have many American educators visited Finland?
A. To know more about PISA tests.
B. To help improve Finland’s education.
C. To popularize American ideas on education. D. To learn from Finland’s educational success
68. Which of the following impressed Luizzi on his trip to Finland?
A. Students have good language skills.
B. Students prefer to communicate in English.
C. Students regard language learning as an interesting game. D. Students begin to learn reading and writing after the age of 7.
69. Krueger will probably agree that the US policy makers should _____________.
A. allow schools to teach philosophy B. give more attention to examinations
C. create a less competitive educational environment D. encourage teachers to review students performance 70. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Finland leads the globe in education. B. Finland performs well in PISA tests.
C. Finland should learn lessons from the US. D. Finland’s education surprises US educators.

As an old saying goes, time and tide wait for no man. Therefore, it is of great significance to cherish every moment and make a proper arrangement of our daily life. Only in this way can we make full use of the precious time as well as realize our dreams.
When it comes to this topic, an experience of mine will well illustrate my opinion. When I first arrived at high school, I was not familiar with how to manage time properly by myself. Lacking experience, I just did everything in a mess. Depressed and frustrated, I turned to my teacher for help. She advised that I (should) learn to allocate my limited time reasonably according to the significance, not hoping to make great progress in a time. It was her timely guidance that helped me restore my confidence and have a clear direction. By arranging my daily life wisely and efficiently, I eventually made it. And most importantly, I became more independent and cautious without parents’ company.
From what has been mentioned above, we can easily come to the conclusion that our success is largely determined by how we distribute our time and whether we try our best to stick
橡皮网 - 正确地成长(www.xiangpi.com)
to the arrangement. So please bear/keep in mind that by no means should we ignore the importance of treasuring the limited time and making a detailed plan.
