How to Use a Washing Machine

Hi there! My name is Tommy and I'm going to teach you how to use a washing machine to wash your clothes. It might seem tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's really easy! Just follow these steps and your clothes will come out fresh and clean every time.

First things first - you need to gather up all the dirty clothes you want to wash. Make sure you check all the pockets for any loose change, tissues, or little toys that may have gotten stuck in there. You don't want those going through the wash! Put all the clothes into a laundry basket or bag.

Next, you need to sort the clothes into different piles based on their color. Keep all the whites together in one pile, and the colored clothes in separate piles for lights and darks. This is important so the colors don't bleed onto the whites or lighter clothes during the wash. My mom is always reminding me about this part!

Okay, now we're ready to start loading the washing machine. Most washing machines have a round door that opens outwards. Give the door a firm pull and it should swing right open for you.

Take a look inside - you'll see a big metal or plastic barrel called the tub where all the clothes go.

For the first load, let's do the whites. Grab that pile of white clothes and start putting them into the tub one by one. Don't stuff them all in there at once as they need some room to move around and get clean properly. Once you've got them all in, give them a spread out so there aren't any bunched up areas. Now it's time to add the detergent! Detergent is the soap that helps get rid of any stains and dirt on your clothes during the wash. Most washing machines have a little dispenser drawer somewhere on the top or front. Pull it out and you'll see a few compartments - one for the detergent, one for liquid bleach if you want your whites extra bright, and maybe another one for fabric softener which makes clothes feel softer.

For this load of whites, let's just use detergent. You'll want to use the powdered kind, not liquid. Check the instructions on the detergent box to see how much you need to use based on the size of your load. I usually use a quarter cup for a regular sized load. Carefully pour the detergent into the correct compartment and push the drawer back in when you're done.

Almost ready now! Take a look at the control panel on your washing machine. It probably has a bunch of buttons, dials and

lights. One of the dials lets you select what kind of wash cycle you want - regular, colors, delicates, etc. For whites, you'll want to choose a regular or normal cycle. Another dial might let you adjust the water temperature - choose hot for white loads as hot water helps get them their cleanest.

There may also be options to adjust the soil level (how dirty the clothes are), spin speed, or add extra rinses. I usually keep it simple and stick to the basic settings. Oh, and make sure you select the largest load size, since we've got a full tub of clothes. Double check that the door is closed properly and secure. Then you're ready to hit the start button! The machine will begin filling with water and you'll hear the tub start sloshing around as it goes through the wash cycle. Depending on what settings you chose, it'll take 30-60 minutes for the whole cycle to finish. While the whites are washing, you can go ahead and load up another tub with your light colored clothes using the same steps we just went through. Just be sure to use the correct cycle and cooler water this time so the colors don't fade.

When the cycle is done, the machine will usually make a buzzing sound to let you know. Carefully open the door - don't burn yourself on the hot water if you used a hot cycle! Reach in

and grab the wet clothes, trying not to drip too much on the floor. My mom is always getting onto me about that.

Put the wet clothes straight into the dryer if you've got one, or hang/lay them out flat to air dry. And that's it - you've successfully washed a load of laundry! Make sure you run the washing machine through a rinse cycle with no clothes when you're all done. This helps keep it clean and fresh for next time. Washing clothes might not be the most fun chore, but it's got to get done. Having clean clothes is way better than being a smelly kid at school, that's for sure! It takes some practice, but I'm getting to be a total pro at using the washing machine. You'll get there too if you follow these steps. Don't stress if you make a mistake sometimes - just laugh it off! Like the time I accidentally turned all my white shirts pink from mixing colors. Whoops! Alright, I think that about covers everything you need to know. Pay close attention, ask an adult if you need help, and pretty soon you'll be a laundry master! Having clean clothes has never been so easy. Thanks for reading along, and happy washing!
