(P=Passage,Q=Question):

Compared to high heels, they don't look remotely hazardous. But flip-flop wearers would do well to think twice before slipping on a pair. The National Health Service spends £40 million a year treating injuries caused by wearing the casual footwear. More than 200,000 people end up in hospital every year after suffering falls or developing long-term problems.

Once worn only at the beach, flip-flops have become the regular summer footwear of choice for women, with two in five women owning at least one pair.

But experts are warning of the dangers of wearing flip-flops, such as the risk of joint pains. They say flip-flops force people to change the way they walk so that when taking a walk with long steps they put pressure on the outside of their foot, rather than their heel, causing long-term damage. And there is also the risk of serious injury. Frequent complaints include twisted ankles, but some have broken their arms or wrists after falling because their flip-flops caught on uneven ground. Many also suffer aching toes as they constantly wear them.

Mike, a spokesman, warned of the damage done by wearers forced to adapt how they walk. He said: “They land on the outside and then roll the foot inwards putting all the pressure on the big toe.”This constant rolling puts pressure on the ankle joint causing it to weaken. The lack of support of the flip-flop also causes pain on the inside of the foot and lower leg. And if you're not used to wearing them, they can cause blisters, he added.

Medics say flip-flops cause far more damage as they are worn for longer periods of time. Emma Supple, consultant podiatrist (足科医师) for the MBT, said: “Flip-flops are universally popular. They are easy to put on and easy to wear but women do need to be mindful that wearing on hard flat surfaces can cause considerable foot and leg problems.”She encouraged women to wear sensible shoes to help recover from summertime injuries. 5. What is the text mainly about?

A. The benefits of wearing flip-flops.B. The dangers of wearing flip-flops.

C. Some advice on how to avoid wearing flip-flops.D. The advantages and disadvantages of wearing flip-flops. 6. What is the Emma Supple’s attitude on wearing flip-flops according to the text? A. Cautious B. Doubtful. C. Regretful. D. Positive. 7. The text is most probably taken from_____.

例3:

Climate change threatens toabandon years of work to handle poverty in developing countries, a report warned today. Strong, urgent action was needed in poor countries to address the impacts of climate change alongside efforts to boost economic development. The report said international aid should not be blind to climate change, ignore measures which help poor countries adapt to its effects, or continue to promote high-carbon development. Instead governments and aid agencies should put climate change at the forefront of work to handle poverty, to help developing nations deal with its impacts and seize new opportunities as the world shifts to a more low-carbon economy.

The Future Climate for Development study said low-income countries and those developed countries should look for \"win-win\" opportunities which simultaneously address climate change and issues such as poverty, health and education. For example, investment in renewable energy could enhance energy security in poor countries, while promoting low-carbon transport would reduce pollution and improve health.

The potential consequences could include developing countries questioning Western models of democracy in the face of the impacts of climate change and food and resources shortages, and for currently unacceptable population controls to be brought in as part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. And conflicts over water and scarce resources couldescalate and will come to dominate international relations, the report said.

Peter Madden, chief executive of Forum for the Future, said \"By putting climate change at the forefront of development, we will not only help the world's poorest to avoid serious risks, but we can also help them seize new opportunities to create better lives for themselves. \"

That is why the UK is now working across the globe to help the world's poorest people prepare for the potentially effects of climate change and shift to the clean technologies that are so vital to a stable, successful world for us all.

This report will act as an important tool to help poor countries plan for an uncertain future, and underlines our need to build climate change into everything we do.

9. Which of the following is not good to the developing countries?

A. To reduce greenhouse and pollution.B. To seize the chance to cooperate with others. C. To abandon the previous work.D. To prepare for the effects of climate change. 10. The underlined word “escalate” Paragraph 4 most probably means______. A. stand up B. cut down C. speed up D. slow down 11. What Peter Madden said in Paragraph 5 means that ____. A. climate change will benefit the developing countries

6

B. pollution influences the development of the poorest countries C. measures should be taken to protect the environment

D. attention to climate change is vital to the world's poorest people 12. The reason why the UK is now working across the globe is that_____.

A. they wish to grasp \"win-win\" opportunities B. they want to develop the economic of their own C. they prepare for the effects of climate change D. they decide to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions

1. abandon vt.

\"Do you like doing things for people?\" I asked a friend. \"Yes, most of the time,\" she replied. \"Most of the time?\" \"Well, I love to do things that are unexpected. I like to do little things most people wouldn't think about doing,\" she said. \"But why did you say most of the time?\" \"Well, sometimes after doing those little things people take advantage of you. I mean, they expect you to do it again. They ask you to do it. That's when I don't like it.\" It was odd that I had this conversation. This just happened to me. I love to do little things. I will pay for a meal card for the people in the office every time we have a meeting there. Not a big thing. It's a little thing. $5.30 will pay for almost five lunches. Hey, big spender!

I also bought a bag of animal crackers for a friend at work. She was having a tough day and not very happy at all. I drove down to the Wal-Mart and picked up a huge bag for under $2.00. Her smile was worth it. But one week she said, \"Bob, we ran out of crackers. We love them so much.\" I didn't want to do it. I smiled and she persisted. I finally admitted, \"It's different when I do it because I want to, but now you are trying to make me go to get them. It's not the same.\" But I bought it for her.

Unfortunately, a big fire in my family took away all the possessions we had. I don’t know what to do and how to do it. What happened to me then surprised me most. I once had my bikes repaired, but the repairman said “no charge” on hearing my sufferings. A stranger called James Kennedy read some pieces I’d written about our

Living in a residence hall(学生宿舍) carries certain obligation (义务). You have to be considerate of others, especially during study hours. Telephone calls and visits by friends should be short. You have to cooperate in keeping the room as sanitary(卫生) as possible. It is sometimes hard to be tolerant (容忍的) of another person’s habits that may differ from your own.

Q: What must you learn to be tolerant of if you live in a dormitory? A. Your roommate’s telephone callsB. Habits that may differ from your own C. Visits by your roommate’s friendsD. Roommates who are unsanitary

They feel they are poor listeners when they think about something else while the other is talking or when they are tired, or not interested in what she or he is talking about. Most people listen only with their ears. Q:According to the passage, listening only with ears may happen to us when____. A.we are emotionally tiredB.we are physically disabled

13

C. we are so interested in the topicD.we are asked many questions

这些选项一般含有不十分肯定或试探性语气的表达,如:probably, possibly, may, usually, might, most of, more or less, relatively, be likely to, not necessary, although, yet, in addition, tend to, be liable to等等,而含有绝对语气的表达往往不是正确答案,如:must, always, never, the most, all, every, any, merely, only, completely, none, hardly, already等等。

With the prospect of coal and petroleum supplies depleted and with air pollution becoming an increasing concern, the major countries of the world are seeking alternate sources of energy. If a means to obtain energy from water, especially from the ocean, can be effected economically, it would furnish a never ending supply of energy, since 70% of the earth′s surface is ocean and another 10% is fresh water in rivers and lakes.

From the beginning of time man has used water power as a source of work— waterfalls and dams —but these are fresh water sources and are landlocked. The seas have contributed little or nothing in the way of power.

The use of temperature variation between currents is one area of exploration. Ocean water is heated by the sun near the equator and drawn by the rotation of the earth toward the poles, where it cools and drops toward the ocean floor and starts its journey back toward the equator. The differential(微分)between the two currents is 35 degrees to 45 degrees Fahrenheit and to use it the scientists must find the places where they run near land and are not too far away from each other. One area that meets these requirements is the Caribbean Sea.

Oceans also offer wave power, tides and the chemical propensities(倾向)of salt water as potential sources of energy. All these uses are theoretically possible.

Britain′s Department of Energy is interested in wave power, using a string of “tear drop” devices that depend on very active wave areas and 100 feet depths. In addition to this, the British are working on a method that the Japanese have already put into practical use on a small scale for powering their navigational buoys. This method is called an oscillating(震荡)water column and rides the waves with a series of cylinders having one way air valves. Wave movement produces air under pressure that has only one escape route— to a turbine(涡轮)that powers a generator.

Q: According to the first two paragraphs, ____. A.the use of water is a completely new concept

14

B. the sea has already long been used as a way of power

C.water is a source of energy far more economical than any other energies D.water, if properly handled, may present a promising solution to energy crisis

解析:很明显,根据委婉原则,正确答案应该为D, 其他三项都含有过于肯定语气的词,如:completely, has already, far more than any other。

The development of rapid transit rail lines in cities should parallel(与……平行) local economic development and blind construction of such lines should be avoided…It stressed that the amount of domestically made equipment used in such infrastructure projects needs to be increased. Q:The rapid-transit rail lines should ______.

A. develop as quickly as possibleB. develop with local economic development C. develop after local economic developmentD. develop with the construction industry

Trees are useful to man in three import ways: they provide him with wood and other products; they give him shade; and they help to prevent droughts and floods. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important.

Q: What is the most important service of trees to man according to the passage? A. They help him make moneyB. They give him wood and other products C. They help him prevent droughts and floodsD. They give him shade

其实,根据“Unfortunately(语义转折标志), in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important, ”我们也可以得出C项为正确答案。

No one should be forced to wear a uniform. Uniforms are totally unnecessary in a democratic society. Uniforms tell the world that the person who wears one has no value as an individual, that is, the individual in a uniform loses self-worth. There are those who say that wearing a uniform gives a sense of identification with a more important concept. But in fact, the individual himself is the most important, if an organization is so weak that it must rely on the uniform to inspire its members, that organization has not right to continue its existence. On the other hand, uniforms also hurt the economy.

16

Q: The author’s main purpose in writing this paragraph is to______. A. show that uniform are possible in a democratic society

B. advocate stronger governmental controls on the wearing of uniforms C. convince the reader that uniforms have more disadvantages than advantages D. advocate doing away with uniforms

The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of 2 September 1666. In four days it destroyed more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. One hundred thousand people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives.

The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the King's baker(面包师)in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window in the roof. A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery(面包房)into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning… Q:The underlined word \"family\" in the second paragraph means. A. homeB.childrenC.wife and husbandD.wife and children 答案:B

17

在了A、C、D中,而在短文his wife and family这一语境中family显然指的是children。

More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual to work. In the United States, the change from formal to casual office wear has been slow. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday. This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employers has really become an everyday thing.” said business consultant Andony Jones.

Q:According to the passage, which of the following is True? ________ A.Company workers started to dress down about 20 years ago.

B.Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon since the early 1990s. C.“Dress-down Friday” was first given as a favour from employers. D.Many workers want to wear casual clothes to impress people.

干扰项B运用了“鱼目混珠法”,根据原文“Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon.”

18

例9:

Who first conceived the idea of the Festival of Hong Kong? To whom did he propose? How did he convince others of the feasibility of such a festival? How was the Festival told to the people of the “Pearl of the Orient”? Put it in another way: what purpose did the festival serve?

The purpose, as stated in the newspaper was a double one: to give Hong Kong people a sense of security after the disturbance of 1967 and to make young people and working people aware of the need for a bit of fun and enjoyment in the grinding work of their daily lives. Q:The purpose of the Festival of Hong Kong is ________.

A. to furnish newspaper with news B. to attract tourists from abroad

C. to provide relief for workers D. to enable people to realize that life is not all work

原文为“The purpose, as stated in the newspaper was a double one: to give Hong Kong people a sense of security after the disturbance of 1967 and to make young people and working people aware of the need for a bit of fun and enjoyment…”

With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone (克隆) the animal and save the endangered species (物种). That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”.

Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos (胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A&M’S College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles will become extinct in over 100

19

years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal. The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.

“The nuclear transfer (核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available (capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes.“They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A&M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog. “They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.” Q:The best title for the passage may be________.

A.China’s Success in Pandas CloningB.The First Cloned Panda in the World

C.Exploring the Possibility to Clone PandasD.China —— the Native Place of Pandas Forever

文中的“They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal” “…China is desperately trying to clone…”

1.The main problem is that our neighbor worlds appear to be unsuitable for advanced life forms. The moon may be the case first, it has hardly any atmosphere. Venus is little better, but the surface’s temperature is very high. Mars with thin atmosphere and little water cannot support the living necessity of the animals. Q: There is unlikely any life on Venus because______. A.it has very thin atmosphere B.the surface temperature is too hot

20

C.the weather is too cold D.it is extremely short of water

2.If Mrs. Abby dies after she has paid premiums for one or two years only, the insurance company will lose heavily. But if she lives to the age of seventy or beyond, the insurance company will make a profit. Q: According to the passage, the insurance company will make great profits________. A. If the premium(保险费)is increased so the company can earn more money each year. B. If nobody above seventy buys insurance against death.

C. If most insurance buyers live longer than the average length of life. D. If most insurance buyers live shorter than the average length of life.

另外,此题根据“But (语义转折标志)if she lives to the age of seventy or beyond, the insurance company will make a profit.” C。 3. Not everyone in the world requires the same amount of living space. The amount of space a person needs around him is a cultural(文化的)difference, not an economic(经济的)one. Knowing your own psychological space needs isimportant because they strongly affect your choices, including, for example, the number of bedrooms in the home. If you were brought up in a two-child-family and both you and your sister or brother had your own bedrooms, the chances are, if you have two children or more, that you also want to offer separate bedrooms for them.

In America, for example, they train people to want to have their own rooms by giving them their own rooms when they are babies. This is very rare in the world. In many other countries, the baby sleeps in the same bed with his parents or in a bed near them.

21

Q:The first sentence in this paragraph “ Not everyone in the world requires the same amount of living space” mean______.

A. Not two people need exactly the same amount of living space B. Living space requirements are not always the same C. The world requires the same amount of living space D. Nobody needs a required amount of living space

I want to talk about the economy. Not \"the economy\"we hear about endlessly in the news each day and in politicians' speeches. I want to talk about the real economy, the one we live in day by day.

Most people aren't particularly interested in \"the economy\".Share prices are flying high; interest rates are soaring; the Dow Jones Index closed sixty-three points down on 8472.35.\" We hear this and subconsciously switch off.

Notice that \"the economy\" is not the same as the economy, \"The economy\" is what men in suits play with to make vast personal wealth. The economy is where the rest of us live on a daily basis, earning our living, paying our taxes, and purchasing the necessities of life.

We are supposed to be benefiting from all the advantages of a well-off society. So why do we feel tired and stressed? We have no time for anything other than work, which is ridiculous given the number of labor-saving devices in our lives. Our towns become more and more crowded. We poison our air and seas, and our food is full of chemical. There's something wrong here. If times were truly good, then you may think we'd all feel optimistic about the future. Yet the majority of us are deeply worried. More than 90 percent of us think we are too concerned about ourselves and not concerned enough about future generations.

The term \"economic expansion\" suggests something desirable, but expansion simply means spending more money. More spending doesn't mean that life is getting better. We all know it often means the opposite—greed, crime, poverty, pollution. More spending merely feeds our whole economic system, which is based on production and consumption. Unless money keeps circulating, the economy breaks down. If we don't keep consuming, the whole system goes into stalemate.

How do we break the cycle and make some changes? We need to become far more aware of the results of our

actions. We buy clothes that are made in sweat shops by virtual slaves in poor parts of the world. We create mountains of waste. We demand cheap food, mindless of the fact that it totally lacks taste and is produced using

23

chemicals that poison the land.

The consumption culture makes us unaware of the effect of our own behavior. Our main problem is not that we don't know what to do about it. It is gathering the desire to do it. 67. According to the author, which one belongs to the real economy? A. The Dow Jones Index. B. Increases in interest rates. C. Skyrocketing share prices. D.Shopping in a supermarket. 68. It can be concluded from Paragraph 4 that. A. people are benefiting from a well-off society B. the future generation is a big concern for most people C. the majority of people are optimistic about the future D. people still feel much pressure despite labor-saving devices 69. What is true about economic expansion?

A. It guarantees a better life for us. B. It may lead to some social problems. C. It will stop the circulation of money. D. It has only brought desirable effects. 70. The author writes the passage mainly to . A. call on us to change our behaviorB. suggest a solution for over-consumption

C. make a distinction between two economiesD. inform us of the effects of economic expansion 答案:A: BCD B:DDBA
