TheLM101Aseriesaregeneralpurposeoperationalampli-fierswhichfeatureimprovedperformanceoverindustrystan-dardsliketheLM709.Advancedprocessingtechniquesmakepossibleanorderofmagnitudereductionininputcurrents,andaredesignofthebiasingcircuitryreducesthetemperaturedriftofinputcurrent.Improvedspecificationsinclude:
•Offsetvoltage3mVmaximumovertemperature(LM101A/LM201A)
•Inputcurrent100nAmaximumovertemperature(LM101A/LM201A)
•Offsetcurrent20nAmaximumovertemperature(LM101A/LM201A)
•Guaranteeddriftcharacteristics
andoutput,nolatch-upwhenthecommonmoderangeisexceeded,andfreedomfromoscillationsandcompensa-tionwithasingle30pFcapacitor.Ithasadvantagesoverinternallycompensatedamplifiersinthatthefrequencycompensationcanbetailoredtotheparticularapplica-tion.Forexample,inlowfrequencycircuitsitcanbeovercompensatedforincreasedstabilitymargin.Orthecompensationcanbeoptimizedtogivemorethanafactoroftenimprovementinhighfrequencyperformanceformostapplications.
Inaddition,thedeviceprovidesbetteraccuracyandlowernoiseinhighimpedancecircuitry.Thelowinputcurrentsalsomakeitparticularlywellsuitedforlongintervalintegratorsortimers,sampleandholdcircuitsandlowfrequencywaveformgenerators.Further,replac-ingcircuitswherematchedtransistorpairsbuffertheinputsofconventionalICopamps,itcangiveloweroffsetvoltageandadriftatalowercost.
TheLM101Aisguaranteedoveratemperaturerangeof−55˚Cto+125˚C,theLM201Afrom−25˚Cto+85˚C,andtheLM301Afrom0˚Cto+70˚C.

Whendrivingeitherinputfromalow-impedancesource,alimitingresistorshouldbeplacedinserieswiththeinputleadtolimitthepeakinstantaneousoutputcurrentofthesourcetosomethinglessthan100mA.Thisisespeciallyimportantwhentheinputsgooutsideapieceofequipmentwheretheycouldaccidentallybeconnectedtohighvoltagesources.Largecapacitorsontheinput(greaterthan0.1µF)shouldbetreatedasalowsourceimpedanceandisolatedwitharesistor.Lowimpedancesourcesdonotcauseaproblemunlesstheiroutputvoltageexceedsthesupplyvoltage.How-ever,thesuppliesgotozerowhentheyareturnedoff,sotheisolationisusuallyneeded.
Theoutputcircuitryisprotectedagainstdamagefromshortstoground.However,whentheamplifieroutputisconnectedtoatestpoint,itshouldbeisolatedbyalimitingresistor,astestpointsfrequentlygetshortedtobadplaces.Further,whentheampliferdrivesaloadexternaltotheequipment,itisalsoadvisabletousesomesortoflimitingresistancetoprecludemishaps.
Precautionsshouldbetakentoinsurethatthepowersup-pliesfortheintegratedcircuitneverbecomereversed—evenundertransientconditions.Withreversevoltagesgreaterthan1V,theICwillconductexcessivecur-rent,fusinginternalaluminuminterconnects.Ifthereisapossibilityofthishappening,clampdiodeswithahighpeakcurrentratingshouldbeinstalledonthesupplylines.Rever-salofthevoltagebetweenV+andV−willalwayscauseaproblem,althoughreversalswithrespecttogroundmayalsogivedifficultiesinmanycircuits.
Theminimumvaluesgivenforthefrequencycompensationcapacitorarestableonlyforsourceresistanceslessthan10kΩ,straycapacitancesonthesummingjunctionlessthan5pFandcapacitiveloadssmallerthan100pF.Ifanyoftheseconditionsarenotmet,itbecomesnecessarytoover-compensatetheamplifierwithalargercompensationcapaci-tor.Alternately,leadcapacitorscanbeusedinthefeedbacknetworktonegatetheeffectofstraycapacitanceandlargefeedbackresistorsoranRCnetworkcanbeaddedtoisolatecapacitiveloads.
AlthoughtheLM101Aisrelativelyunaffectedbysupplyby-passing,thiscannotbeignoredaltogether.Generallyitisnecessarytobypassthesuppliestogroundatleastonceoneverycircuitcard,andmorebypasspointsmayberequiredifmorethanfiveamplifiersareused.Whenfeed-forwardcompensationisemployed,however,itisadvisabletoby-passthesupplyleadsofeachamplifierwithlowinductancecapacitorsbecauseofthehigherfrequenciesinvolved.
