Trusting In the Kindness of Strangers

While driving from my home on the long way to work I noticed a car in front of me had a wobbly (摇摆的) wheel. It was clear the wheel had been changed recently and had not been fixed correctly. On a slow road this would not present much of a problem, but I knew the route and knew a motorway (高速公路) was coming soon where the traffic would move much faster and would be very dangerous as the wheel could come off at that speed.

I was driving a large jeep at the time and the car in front was a small to mid sized car driven by a lady on her own. So as I tried to flash ray lights and wave her to pull over I was worried that looking in her mirror she would see a lone man chase her down in a jeep waving frantically for her to pull over on this side road.

Thankfully she trusted more in the good nature of people and pulled over where I could explain the problem. She confirmed the wheel was changed only the night before and said she would pull in to the next garage before the motorway where they would have the tools to fix the wheel correctly.

My belief is that the act of kindness was hers and not mine. How so? Well, it was her who chose to trust in the possibility that people are good over the belief that bad things come from being waved down to the side of the road by strangers. I do preach(宣扬) caution and would have hesitated myself to pull over to the side should a stranger in a car wave me down.

I will never know, thankfully, if the wheel may have come off and caused a serious sediment but it was risky and at the very least might have caused damage to her car, so for that I am glad I was able to wave her down. But I am more glad she trusted in a stranger.

57.The underlined word “frantically” in the second paragraph probably means “ ”. A.politely B.madly C.casually D.calmly 58.The lady would have her problem solved . A.with the author’s help immediately B.by driving slowly C.before entering the motorway D.with the tools the author gave her

59.What did the author mean by the sentence “My belief is that the act of kindness was hers and

not mine.”? A.It was the lady herself that saved her. B.The lady was really so special a woman. C.The author was grateful for being trusted. D.The lady was so kind a lady that she was worth the help.

Airtight plastic bags can help farmers protest their harvests without the use of harmful chemicals. These bags are designed to keep air out of crops in storage. They are a simple way to fight insects and keep food fresh.

Ten countries in West and Central Africa are involved in a project to improve the storage of cowpeas, also known as black, eyed peas. Farmers can lose much of the harvest to insects called brooches. These grow from egg to adult in a few weeks and then lay forty to sixty more eggs. They can destroy the whole harvest within months.

Farmers can sell their crop immediately. But selling at harvest time means more competition and lower prices. Or they can use pesticides (杀虫剂) to kill the bugs. But crop scientist Dieudonne Baributsa says. “They end up misusing or overusing the pesticide. In Nigeria, they have reported a lot of cases of death. They usually call it in Nigeria ‘killer bean’.”

Mr. Barbusse is a researcher at Purdue University in the American state of Indiana. The project is called PICS, for Purdue Improved Cowpea Storage. He says the storage bags are from a lack of oxygen. The lack of air will also help prevent the growth of bacteria that can ruin the harvest. The

bags cost about two dollars each. Mr. Baributsa says that is not much, especially if it means farmers can wait long enough to get a better price for their crop. The bags are produced locally. Donors currently support the project, but the groups involved are working to build a lasting market for the bags because donor support for the project will not last forever.

A company based in the United States called CrainPromakes another kind of airtight bag. These are called SuperGrainbags. Phil Villers, the company’s president, says safely storing a harvest not only earns more money for farmers, it also reduces the amount of food lost to insects, spoilage and mishandling. “What does not get wasted and eaten means it is available to feed a hungry world,” said Phil Villers.

60.What’s the best title for this passage? A.Simple Bags Save the Harvest B.Plastic Bags; the Enemy of Insects C.Good News for Hungry World D.Pesticides Threaten Food Safety

61.It can be inferred that bruchids . A.steal the stored crop for the future B.breed slowly in the stored harvest C.survive in airtight plastic bags D.multiply while the crop is in storage 62.How does “killer bean” come out? A.The pesticide causes many deaths of bugs. B.People eat beans that are infected by bugs. C.Farmers use chemicals to kill bugs improperly. D.Bugs ruin beans within a short time.

63.Which statement of the following is NOT true? A.Insects in the bags will soon use up the air and then die. B.The airtight plastic bags currently sold the market do not last long. C.The project provides the farmers with the bags for free at present. D.What farmers can earn from the use of the bag is far more than they have to pay.

Some students get so nervous before a test, they do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock has studied these highly anxious test – takers.

Sian Beilock: “They start worrying about the consequences. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. I talk about it as your cognitive (认知的) horsepower that you could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.”

Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before and exam, highly anxious test – takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the text.

Sian Beilock: “What we think happens is when students put it down on paper, they think about the worst that could happen and they reappraise the situation. They might realized it’s not as bad as they might think it was before and, in essence, it prevents these thoughts from popping up when they’re actually taking a text.”

The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave

版权所有:中华资源库 www.ziyuanku.com

them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.

The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second test would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other student as part of a team effort.

Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of twelve percent worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of five percent.

Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test.

Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B +, compared to a B – for those who did not.

Sian Beilock: “What we showed is that for students who are highly test – anxious, who’d done our writing intervention, all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. Those students most prone to wry were performing just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these testing situations.”

But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Profestsor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.

64.What may happen if students have the problem of test anxiety? A.Test anxiety can improve student’s performance some degree. B.Students’ attention and memory resources run out when worried. C.Students may not be admitted into their favorite college if worried. D.Test anxiety is sure to cause students to fail the fest. 65.Which of the following is TURE? A.In the first math test, students who sat quietly performed better. B.In the second math test, students who wrote about their feelings did worse. C.Some college students are highly anxious test-takers while others are not in the tests. D.The result in the math test agrees with that in the biology test. 66.What does the underlined phrase “popping up” mean? A.Appearing suddenly. B.Fading away. C.Becoming clearly. D.Giving out. 67.What is the main idea of the passage? A.It is a common practice for students being worried before a test. B.Being worried before tests does harm to students’ performance. C.Anxious students overcome test anxiety by writing down fears. D.It is important for students to overcome test anxiety.

Young women are losing faith in the university system with nearly half believing it is not worth getting a degree. Tuition fees and little chance of getting a good job make higher education an unattractive prospect for them, a study suggests. If found that nearly half of female graduates would not go to university if they had the chance again.

版权所有:中华资源库 www.ziyuanku.com

The research will cause concern because it was carried out before the government announeed

that fees will almost treble to £9,000 in 2012. The findings have prompted warnings that a generation of ambitious young women will miss out on a high-flying(抱有雄心大志的) career and the opportunity to continue their education. Louise Court, editor of Cosmopolitan magazine, which conducted the survey, said young women seem to think university “a waste of time”. “It’s never been harder to be a young woman with ambition,” she said, “Understandably, women are angry and frustrated about their future and this is having a damaging effect on their self-esteem.” The survey of 1,353 women also looked at the career prospects and financial outlook for women in 2011. Two thirds of those questioned said they thought it would be “almost impossible” to get their dream job and a quarter were unable to follow their preferred career. Only 14 per cent said they felt safe from the sack. And the financial situation for graduates was especially bad, with half saying they had so much student debt that they could not save. The same proportion believed they faced worse financial hardship than their parents. One in seven women said they had been forced to postpone getting married because a wedding would be too expensive. And more than one in six admitted that financial constraints had made them postpone trying to start a family. Vicky Tuck, a campaigner for women’s education and former head of Cheltenham Ladies College, said, “The rise in fees is going to make a lot of people reflect on why they are going to university… I believe that women should only go to university if they have a genuine interest in learning, a precious opportunity. It they go purely to get a job, many will be disappointed.” 72.The passage is intended to . A.appeal to the government to lower tuition fees

B.persuade young women to think twice before making a decision to go to university C.introduce to the readers the findings of a survey D.advice young women to value the opportunity to go to university for the sake of their future 73.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A.Nearly half of the women graduates regretted going to university.

B.More than one in six women surveyed will not marry because of financial constraints. C.Most women in Britain thought they had more financial burdens than their parents. D.Half of the graduates surveyed found it difficult to save enough to pay student debt. 74.What Vicky Tuck said in the last paragraph implies that . A.it is unreasonable for the movement to increase tuition fees

B.all the women are not fit to go to university

C.women should treasure the opportunity to go to university despite the rise in fees D.the rise in fees will disappoint many women

75.Louise Court holds a (n) attitude towards women’s viewpoint on university. A.critical B.optimistic C.supportive D.objective 第四部分 写作(共两节,满分35分)
