You may have seen photos and videos of broken windows, falling trees and heavy rain on the internet. They were caused by Typhoon Mangkhut (台风山竹), the strongest typhoon to hit China this year.

On Sept 15, Mangkhut landed on the coast (海岸) of Jiangmen in Guangdong province, with wind speeds of 162 kilometers per hour. Till Sept 18, five people were killed and over 1.6 million people had to evacuate. More than 5,500 houses were broken . Schools in the areas were closed as well.

One of the causes of all the powerful storms this year may be climate change. Hurricanes(飓风) and typhoons are actually the same thing – they are both tropical cyclones(热带气旋). Temperature(温度) changes cause them to form on the sea.

Because of global(全球)warming, ocean temperatures are rising and tropical cyclones are forming with more energy and strength. Experts say that strong storms like these ones will become more common in future, the South China Morning Post said.

What subject do you worry about the most at school? Many students worry about math. Some students can’t sleep well the day before a math exam. Others may feel very nervous during the exam itself. But there might be a way to make the subject less stressful(有压力的).

That’s right — sitting up straight can help you do better on math exams.

Scientists tested 125 college students. They asked them to do a simple math text while sitting in a slumped-over (趴倒的) position, or sitting up straight. After the test, 56%of students said the exam was easier to do if they were sitting up straight.

Slumping over is a defensive posture(防御姿势). It can cause negative (消极的) memories in the body and brain. This can stop you from thinking clearly, Peper said.

Students who were good at math did not necessarily benefit(有益于) from better posture. But they did find that doing math while slumped over was more difficult, Science Daily reported.

Good posture isn’t just helpful for taking math exams. Players, musicians and public speakers can all benefit from better posture. When you feel worried, you can also try to sit up straight or stand tall. It can help you feel more positive(积极的) and do better.

(A) Sneezing the American way

Hello, I’m Zheng Yishi from Shanghai. I’m 14 years old. I am an Eighth-grader at Walsh Jesuit High School in Cleveland, Ohio, US. I like reading, traveling and music. I’m glad to share my experiences with you.

As an international student in the United States, I have truly felt the cultural differences between China and the United States.

I am staying with my homestay family (寄宿家庭). When I was in class, I sneezed (打喷嚏). About half of the class turned to me and said, “Bless you!” I felt strange and did not know what to do next. So I asked a classmate and he told me it is a custom in the US. You don’t need to do anything when others say, “Bless you.”

He told me another funny thing. Once someone in the class sneezed six times continuously (连续地), so the others said “bless you” on and on. Everybody couldn’t stop laughing.

“Have a good day” and “have a nice weekend” can always be heard in the US. I learned it’s not so difficult to understand the customs here. As the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

It’s not easy to learn math well. Students need to remember many formulas and do lots of math exercises. Beginning this fall semester(学期), many students in the United Kingdom are going to learn math in the way Chinese students do.

In August, a whole set of Shanghai’s primary(小学) school math textbooks, Real Shanghai Maths 《真正上海数学》, went on the UK’s book market. There are 36 books, including a Teacher Guide, Textbook and Pupil Practice Book for each grade (1-6), according to Xinhua. The books are translated word-for-word from the Chinese versions(版本). The only change is the price. The Chinese yuan become the British pound.

This is not the first time the UK has learned from China’s math instruction. Since 2014, the UK has invited many junior and primary school math teachers in Shanghai to teach in its schools. In 2015, the publishing house Collins Learning introduced the practice book One Lesson, One Exercise 《一课一练》to Britain. There were 11 books for the 11 grades, from primary school to high school. This is because the UK doesn’t want their students to fall behind. In the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment (国际学生评估项目), Shanghai students were No 1 in math. British students, however, were No 26.

“This will help young people be prepared for further study,” said Nick Gibb, minister of

Britain’s schools.

A. college

B. kindergarten(幼儿园) C. primary

D. middle

46. What’s the difference between the Chinese textbooks and the English versions?

B. 公式

C.数字

D. 数学

47 . What does the word formulas in Paragraph 1 mean?

48. Why does the UK want to learn from Chinese math instruction?

A. Because Chinese students all like math very much. B. Because UK students fell behind in math.

C. Because parents in the UK prefer the Chinese way of teaching. D. Because UK students are less hardworking than Chinese students.

I bet(打赌) you use memes (表情包) when talking to your friends on WeChat or QQ. And among the file formats (文件格式), maybe GIF is one of your favorites.

A GIF is usually a short funny video repeating only a few seconds. The GIF turned 30 this year, which makes it old in web history. That’s even two years older than the World Wide Web. Ever since the GIF was created(创造) in 1987, it has long been overlooked(忽视). Then smartphones and social media(媒体) have brought it back to our daily lives.

According to David McIntosh from the GIF search service Tenor, the GIF does a better job of showing people’s feelings than short text messages do. “Things like ‘lol’ (laugh out loud) aren’t very expressive (有表现力的),” he told Wired.

The GIF is also a very small file format. This helped it become popular among cellphone users. Because of its popularity, Oxford Dictionaries named “GIF” the word of the year in 2012. Last year, Facebook users sent more than 13 billion (十亿) GIFs, reported Sina News.

There are even search services specifically (专门) for GIFs, such as Tenor and Giphy. If you can’t find anything you like there, just create your own GIF on apps like DSCO and Giphy Cam. 49. According to the first two paragraphs, a GIF is actually .

A. a small picture A. In 1985.

B. a long text B. In 1989.

C. a short video C. In 1987.

D. a big file D. In 2012.

50. When was the World Wide Web created?

51. What have smartphones and social media done to the GIF?

B. They refused to use it. D. They made it popular.

52. Which of the following is NOT TRUE of the GIF?

A. It uses a lot of data(数据). C. It is funny and short.

B. It shows feelings better than words. D. It is a word in the Oxford Dictionary.

I have a rule for travel-never carry a map. I prefer to ask for direction.

Foreign visitors are often puzzled' (困惑的) in Japan because most streets there don't have names. In Japan, people use landmarks instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, \"Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.\"

In the country of the American Midwest, usually there are not many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat. In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas, for example, people will say, \"Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.\"

People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map. They measure(测量) distance by telling time. \"How far away is the post office?\" you ask. \"Oh,\" they answer, \"it's about five minutes from here.\" You say, \"Yes, but how many miles away is it?\" They don't know.

People in Mexico never answer \"I don't know.\" People in Yucatan think that \"I don't know\" is not polite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

One thing will help you everywhere. You might not understand a person's words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language. He or she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction. Go in that direction, and you may find the post office! 1. What do you think the word \"landmarks\" means? It means _______.

D. buildings or places which are easily seen

2. In which place do people tell distance by telling time?

A. Travelers can learn about people's customs (习俗) by asking questions about directions. B. People in some places give directions in miles, but people in other places give directions by telling time.

C. A person's body language can help you understand directions.

D. People in different places always give directions in the same way-they use street names. 答案:DCBD

We usually send and receive information through the movement of our bodies. Body language can express(表达) different feelings. We often use gestures(手势) or body movements to express our mind. For example, when someone is giving a talk, he or she may often use his or her hands to emphasize(强调) points.

I work as a volunteer for an organization that helps the poor in Haiti. I decided to take my son Brain there for a week, hoping to educate(教育) him.

Before getting out, I told Brain this trip would be tiring and hard. For the first two days, he said almost nothing. Then on the third day, when we were climbing over high rocky mountains, he

turned to me and smiled, “Really hard.”

After that, a five-year-old girl, wearing a too large dress and broken shoes, followed Brain around. Later he said regretfully(遗憾地), “I wish I could speak French.” I was surprised that this was from a boy who always hated French classes.

However(然而), the moment that really reached my heart occurred in a village(村庄) deep in the mountains. I was interviewing(采访) a woman villager for an article. By working hard, she had learned to read and write and became part of the leadership(领导层) of the village.

Learning her story, Brain was greatly touched. His eyes were wet and there was love and respect(尊重) on his face. He finally understood the importance of my work. You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABCs? Do you know there is such a thing as “a banana person”? How strange! ABC means American-born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside. So, when a person is a “banana”, he or she is white inside—thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside—looking like a Chinese.

Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don’t speak Chinese. But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are overseas(海外的)Chinese. These people may be citizens(公民)of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair.

But they are not Chinese citizens. They are people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C. N. Yang(杨振宁). He got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen. 41. “ABCs” in this passage means .

In Britain, people have a strange hobby. When there’s a Bank Holiday(法定假期) weekend, a certain kind of shop always gets very busy, and it’s not what you might think — a clothes shop or a music shop. Many people go to DIY stores and garden centers instead of relaxing(放松) at home.

Doing DIY is very popular in Britain and there are lots of TV programmes which show people how to do DIY projects. Some people just do some simple decorating — putting up wallpaper and painting walls. But there are all kinds of DIY projects that some people decide to do, for example, putting in a new shower.

Unluckily, some people start doing a job but end in DIY disaster(灾难). For example, electrical things should be done by a special worker, but many people don’t care about this warning(警告) and put themselves in danger.

Gardening is also popular, and it is a good way to enjoy the weather on a sunny Bank Holiday. But it’s not as easy as planting plants and doing some watering. More difficult work such as building a new garden or making some decorations can cause backache.

So why do people do it? Maybe they are so used to working that they aren’t very good at relaxing. One thing is for sure, though a lot of DIY or gardening projects will be started with the best plans, many of them may not get finished!

The relationship(关系) between students and teachers is very important. Why? Every day, we spend more hours with our teachers at school than with our parents at home. We learn many things from them, and they teach us to be good people.

At American schools, the situation is a little different. Teachers and students are more like friends. Calling a teacher by his or her name is very common. In class, students express their opinions freely and challenge(挑战) teachers when they don't agree. If it turns out that a teacher makes a mistake, the teacher will say “sorry” in front of the whole class. Students and teachers also communicate through e-mail or Twitter after class. They talk about studies and life experiences. Study is never the only topic between them in the US.

However, in China, many students think that teachers care mainly about our studies and school lives. We believe that they know everything, especially about the subjects they teach. They also have the right to decide who should be the new class leaders or take part in activities on behalf of (代表) the class. Teachers somehow are powerful.

So, many students want to be the teacher’s “pet”. Just like a pet to its owner, we show great respect(尊重) to our teachers. For example, in class, we often keep quiet if the teacher doesn’t ask us to speak. We seldom argue(争辩) with our teachers, and believe everything teachers say. When they make a mistake, we seldom point it out. Some of us even wouldn’t like to contact (接触) teachers after class, because we don’t want to bother (打搅) them.

It’s good to show respect for our dear teachers, but we’d better think more about how to build good relationship with teachers.
