BP – supplying polypropylene resins
with properties you need
BP provides their customers with a unique portfolio of resins forBOPP applications.
As the world-leading supplier ofsealing resins for the production ofbi-axially oriented films, BP offersthe most complete range of sealinglayer products. We have threedistinct resin types:
• High ethylene content randompropylene/ethylene copolymers(KS 400 series)
• Propylene/ethylene/buteneterpolymers (KS 300 series)• High comonomer contentpropylene/alfa-olefin copolymers(KS 341/349/399)
Our wide range of resins cover avery broad spectrum of seal initiationtemperatures ranging from 90°C upto 115°C, combined with excellenthot tack and optical properties. To complete our skin layer offer, BP proposes a new C4 randomresin with enhanced surfaceproperties, specifically dedicated tometal receptive layers in metallisedfilm applications.
BP also supplies a broad portfolio ofhomopolymers for BOPP suited forthe final applications of the films. These resins, designed to becomplementary, offer the followingproperties to BOPP films:SealingHot tack

metallisationBP – excellent technical support and
state-of-the-art laboratories
BP has a dedicated team of technical experts based in a world-class laboratory at the renowned research centre at Neder Over Hembeek, near Brussels. The team provides a highly experienced and knowledgeable resource for customers to test and develop new film structures in partnership with BP.
Our BOPP film laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to test the following film properties:
• Sealing – we have various high andlow pressure machines, with eitherone or two heated jaws to test thesealing performance of films.• Hot tack – we are able to use avariety of methods to test hot tackperformance, including the ‘fallingweight test’
• Packaging – in order to maintainour capability to serve ourcustomers we have equipped ourlaboratory with a small industrialVertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS)packaging machine (maximumspeed 140 packs/minute)• Surface properties – in filmapplications, the surface/weightratio is so high that all surfaceproperties become verysignificant. Among the commonsurface properties, we are able to test the following:Slip properties (coefficient of friction)Surface tension Surface resistance
• Mechanical properties – ourlaboratory is equipped withmachines able to determine themost common and importantmechanical properties of films: Tensile properties Flexural modulus • Stretching – our laboratoryequipment now includes a newfully instrumented stretchingframe in order to study theorientation process and also togenerate biaxially oriented filmsamples for laboratory evaluationof the final properties of our resins• Winding/slitting – our filmlaboratory is also equipped with a winding and slitting machine that allows us to check theprocessability of films, as well as to cut rolls of the appropriatedimensions to feed our packagingmachine, or to supply customerswith samples
