完形填空(共20小题;每小题1分,满分20分)
Similarities between Donald Trump and Harry Potter’s enemy, Lord Voldemort, did not go ___36___ during the 2019 campaign. Even Trump supporters bought election campaign posters ___37___ Trump in front of an American flag as background, with a quote from the Dark Lord himself:\" There is no good and evil, there is only power, and those too ___38___ to seek it.\"
The political messages of this wildly popular series have drawn much attention. J.K. Rowling once explained, “I wanted Harry to find the same problems in the wizarding world about the importance of group purity.” Lord Voldemort backs up the clearance of impure bloods. During Voldemort’s time ___39___, people live in ___40___ fear that they will be killed, either for having ___41___ blood or for sympathizing with those who ___42___. In comparison, Donald Trump has ___43___ a temporary moratorium (临时禁令) on Muslim immigration and suggested establishing a national database to ___44___ all Muslims.
On top of that, there is a consensus surrounding at least three themes, which played an important role in Donald Trump's 2019 presidential campaign. They are widely viewed as ___45___ the values in the Harry Potter Series.
Tolerance of Difference
As Gerson and others have noted, “___46___ is one of the main themes of the Harry Potter books.” The main characters are quite mindful of ___47___ practices and the need to protect those ___48___ of handling unequal treatment. For example, Harry frees the house-elf, Dobby, from enslavement by Lucius Malfoy, a decision that later helps him win the battle of good over evil. When Potter’s young son expresses prejudice against Slytherin, the house of many of Harry’s opponents, he is quickly ___49___ by his father who tells him that the bravest man he ever knew was a Slytherin.
Opposition to Punitive (惩罚性的) Policies
The Harry Potter series also promotes non-violent ___50___ of conflict solution. Although the stories themselves include plenty of violence and even death, these crimes are committed strictly by those on the side of evil: “Using violence freely is a ___51___ of bad people”. Voldemort is willing to kill many times in order to attain immortality; ___52___. Harry Potter, on the other hand, refuses to kill. Instead, Potter turns to disarming his enemies as his major means of protection. Donald Trump again runs parallel to Voldemort rather than Potter, suggesting that “torture works”. As one headline ___53___, “Donald Trump is running to be America’s next top torture president.” He has even advocated killing the families of terrorists as a means of deterrence (威慑).
Anti-authoritarianism
The main characters in Harry Potter ___54___ in their opposition to authoritarian characters in the novels. Of course, the best-known authoritarian in these stories is Voldemort. Consistent with authoritarian principles, Trump promises order as well as control over all potential threats. As does Voldemort, Trump portrays himself as a strongman who can bend others to his will, be they the Chinese government or terrorists.
Can Harry Potter win over Donald Trump? This question remains to be answered. All the messages appear to be influential in changing Harry Potter readers' views as well as their support for Trump. Perhaps most importantly, these findings raise the hope that Harry Potter can stop the Deathly Donald and make America great again in the eyes of the world, just as Harry did by ___55___the wizard world of Voldemort.

MCDONALD’S drew ridicule in China when it changed its registered name there to Jingongmen, or ‘Golden Arches’, in October, after it was sold to a Chinese corporate. Some on Weibo thought it sounded old-fashioned and awkward, others thinking that it had connotations(隐含意义) of furniture. The fast-food chain was quick to reassure customers that its restaurants would continue to go by Maidanglao, a rough transliteration(音译) that has, over the years, become a recognizable brand name. But for most companies now entering Chinese markets, transliterations are a thing of the past, says Amanda Liu, vice-president of Labbrand (朗标公司), a consultancy based in Shanghai that advises firms on brand names.
Companies are instead choosing Chinese names with meanings that capture people’s imagination. That often involves going beyond a direct translation. New entrants are taking inspiration from BMW, which is the evocative Baoma, or ‘treasure horse’, in China, and from Coca-Cola, which is Kekoukele, or ‘delicious happiness’.
The naming process is forcing companies to think harder about the image they want to project in China, says Ms Liu. LinkedIn, a professional-networking site owned by Microsoft, chose the name Lingyin, or ‘leading elite’, in 2019, signifying more exclusivity than its Western name. Her other corporate customers have included Airbnb, Marvel Comics and Haribo. Labbrand tests proposals with focus groups, ensuring that the name has no negative associations in any of the major Chinese dialects.
A vital part of the process is checking that candidate names have not already been snapped up. The Chinese are energetic trademarkers: in 2019 there were 2.8m trademark applications in China, more than treble those in America and the EU combined. Companies considering entering the Chinese market might often find that their products have already been given local names, thanks, for example, to coverage in the press.
Some even find that their Chinese name has already been trademarked, says Matthew Dresden
of Harris Bricken, a law firm, either by their own distributors, competitors seeking to block its entry, counterfeiters(伪造者) hoping to pass as the company, or squatters(擅自占用房屋或土地的人)intending to sell the trademark to the highest bidder. Counterfeiters might also take advantage of soundalikes, says Mr. Dresden, who advises clients to trademark those, too.
Perhaps thanks to these mishaps (小事故), foreign firms are getting wiser to the importance of naming in China. More Chinese firms are also seeking advice on foreign names, says Ms. Liu, as they seek to conquer Western markets. Both know that if they blunder, the social-media critics will be waiting.

An artificial intelligence chatbot (聊天机器人) called TacoBot from fast food chain Taco Bell now lets you order a meal in a smartphone text exchange that might look something like this:
TacoBot: Hello there. I’m your TacBot. I can help you order a meal for you or your team. You: Can I order one soft taco (墨西哥煎玉米卷) with beef?
TacoBot: Sounds good. Do you want to keep adding stuff? Maybe some bacon?
Brands like Taco Bell and some tech companies are betting that more and more people will start using this conversational way of interacting online instead of clicking through on-screen menus.
If the trend catches on --- as firms like Facebook and Microsoft expect --- it could transform the digital landscape by allowing smartphone users to find information or make purchases with simple text messages, ignoring apps and search engines. Among the companies already developing or launching chatbots are the Wall Street Journal, CNN and retail giants Sephora and H&M.
“I believe we are headed to a shift where this will become one of the primary ways we interact with the digital world,” says Mark Beccue of Mark Beccue Consulting, who follows trends in the messaging market. “The chat user interface (界面) is what makes sense for a mobile-first world. You can be more specific and be quicker.”
Messaging services have become a natural place for chatbots to reside (居住), since their usage is growing: at least 1.4 billion people used a messaging app last year. According to Business Insider Intelligence, messaging apps have overtaken the largest social networks in the world.
The messaging service Kik meanwhile launched its own “bot shop”, with partners including retailers and game developers. Kik said the move was a response to the trend people using fewer apps and spending more time on chat platforms. “There’s nothing to download, no new registration required, and you can use an interface you’re already familiar with: chat,” Kik said in a statement.
However, some analysts remain skeptical on chatbots as the wave of the future. Jan Dawson
of Jackdaw Research said the movement is largely driven by Microsoft and Facebook, two firms which would like a greater presence in mobile even though they don’t control the biggest smartphone operating systems. “There’s a lot of hype (炒作) around chatbots,” Dawson said.
Artificial intelligence has come a long way with systems like Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa and Microsoft’s Cortana, but still cannot deal with all possible situations, says Roger Kay of Endpoint Technologies Associates. “There’s a kind of hubris (自大) that someone could expand the one-to-many communication method to every human interaction,” Kay said. 61. Why does the author mention the smartphone text exchange at the beginning?
A. To indicate that more and more people begin to hate ordering food by clicking online. B. To reflect that Taco Bell is turning to a new sales method to compete in the market. C. To inform the readers of a convenient way to purchase what they want online. D. To show that chatbot will become more and more popular among people. 62. We can learn from the passage that _____.

\"Why do we have to learn all this dumb stuff?\"
Of all the complaints and questions I have heard from my students during my years in the classroom, this was the one most frequently asked. I would answer it by telling the following legend.
One night a group of nomads(游牧民) were preparing to retire for the evening when suddenly they were surrounded by a great light. They knew they were in the presence of a godly being. With great expectation, they awaited a heavenly message of great importance that they knew must be especially for them.
Finally, the voice spoke, \"Gather as many pebbles (鹅卵石) as you can. Put them in your bags. Travel a day's journey and tomorrow night will find you glad and it will find you sad.\"
The nomads shared their disappointment and anger with each other. They had expected the inspiration of a great universal truth that would enable them to create wealth, health and purpose for the world. But instead they were given a silly task that made no sense to them at all. However, the memory of the brilliance of their visitor caused each one to pick up a few pebbles and store them in their bags while voicing their displeasure.
They traveled a day's journey and that night while making camp, they reached into their bags and discovered every pebble they had gathered had become a diamond. They were glad they had diamonds. They were sad they had not gathered more pebbles.
It was an experience I had with a student, whom I shall call Alan, early in my teaching career that illustrated the truth of that legend to me.
When Alan was in the eighth grade, he majored in \"trouble\" with a minor in \"suspensions (停学)\". He had studied how to be a bully and was getting his master's degree in \"thievery\".
Every day I had my students memorize a quotation from a great thinker. As I called roll, I
would begin a quotation. To be counted present, the student would be expected to finish the thought.
\"Alice Adams--- 'There is no failure except...\"' \"'In no longer trying.' I'm present, Mr. Schlatter.\"
So, by the end of the year, my young pupils would have memorized 150 great thoughts. \"People nowadays know the price of everything and the value of nothing.\" \"No pains, no gains.\"
\"If you can conceive it, and believe it, you can achieve it.\"
No one complained about this daily routine other than Alan - right up to the day he was expelled(开除) and I lost touch with him for five years. Then one day, he called. He was in a special program at one of the neighboring colleges and had just finished parole(假释).
He told me that after being sent to juvenile hall (少管所) and finally being shipped off to the
California Youth Authority for his wrong doings, he had become so disgusted with himself that he had taken a razor blade and cut his wrists.
He said, \"You know what, Mr. Schlatter, as I lay there with my life running out of my body, I
suddenly remembered that quote you made me write 20 times one day.\" There is no failure except in no longer trying.\" Then it suddenly made sense to me. As long as I was alive, I wasn't a failure, but if I allowed myself to die, I would most certainly die a failure. So with my remaining strength, I called for help and started a new life.\"
At the time he had heard the quotation, it was a pebble. When he needed guidance in a moment of crisis, it had become a diamond. And so it is to you I say, gather all the pebbles you can, and you can count on a future filled with diamonds.
65. What does the underlined sentence \"it will find you sad\" mean? A. The God told the nomads to gather pebbles that made no sense to them. B. The pebbles won't enable the nomads to create fortune. C. The God didn't give the nomads the message they expected.

C. People nowadays know the price of everything and the value of nothing. (Para. 13) D. You can count on a future filled with diamonds. (Para. 19) 67. Which of the following is FALSE according to the passage? A. Not all the nomads gathered and stored some pebbles in their bags. B. Students who finished the half-sentence quotation were counted present.
C. All students don't like the daily routine of finishing the half-sentence quotation. D. It was the strong faith of never dying a failure that saved Alan's life.
68. Why did Alan commit suicide after being shipped off to the California Youth Authority? A. He hated the hard life in the juvenile hall. B. He was expelled by the school in the end.

【答案】An increasing number of American teenagers use social media on a daily basis. While social media do have advantages, there are already facts and statistics indicating they bring about negative impacts on teenagers.
Important tool as social media are, their negative influence can’t be neglected. First, when teens use social media, they are likely to have trouble concentrating on their schoolwork. Besides, too much time spent using social media may decrease their real life communication. What’s worse, constant exposure to the fantasy world tends to harm teens’ self-dignity and hence leads to a lack of self-confidence, let alone the unhealthy information.
In view of the above mentioned consequences, for teens, proper use of social media is a must. First, parents should well guide their kids and set a limit. Moreover, teens should bear in mind that study is a top priority and thus spend less time on social media.
