Renaissance(文艺复兴)is a French word. It mean “rebirth” It’s a strange name for a period of history. What was it that was “ reborn” during the Renaissance? To answer this question, we need to look back at the time of the Roman Empire. At this time Roman artists, scientists and writers influenced by Greek ideas were the world’s most advanced. They had become skilled observers of the natural world around them, and had become experts in studying animals, plants, the human body or the stars and planets. They wrote down their ideas about what they saw, and based their theories about the world on their observations.

During the fourth and fifth centuries the Roman Empire slowly broke down. Many of the Romans’ art and sculptures were destroyed and some manuscripts(原稿)were lost as well. But most importantly, some of the ancient attitudes were lost. A questioning approach to the world was replaced by an unquestioning one.

Why did this happen? One reason was to do with the influence of the Christian Church. Through the thousand years following the fall of the Roman Empire, the Church controlled many aspects of life including education and learning. The Church ran all the universities and thought that the aim of a university should be to teach old ideas more clearly, not to introduce new ones. The scholars in the universities were expected to study God and heaven from the Bible and ancient books, rather than the world around them.

Take medicine for example. The main textbook for doctors had been written by a Greek doctor called Galen more than a thousand years earlier. But when Roger Bacon, a thirteenth-century priest(牧师), said that a new approach to medicine was needed-doctors should do their own original research instead of reading writers from the past such as Galen-the Church put him in prison.

By the time of the fourteenth century, however, some parts of the Christian Church were becoming less strict about their ideas and there was a new state of mind among artists, doctors and scientist. People wanted to find out more about the world by studying it. This attitude of investigation had been common in classical scholars,

and it was ‘reborn’ during the Renaissance.

21. We know from the text that scientists at the time of the Roman Empire believed in_______.

A. their companions’ observations B. what they saw with their own eyes C. what they learned from the Greeks D. the most advanced theories at that time

22. We can infer that students in the Church controlled universities might_________. A. have good memories B. change their beliefs C. be lacking in creativity D. be interested in astronomy

23. Roger Bacon was put in prison because he_________. A. gave up being a priest B. challenged the Church C. did some research secretly D. showed no respect for Galen

24. The text probably comes from a book about_________.

A. medicine B. history C. religion D. education

The summer before my senior year of high school, I was eating in a cafeteria with some other high school students, and one girl asked me , “Do you live in a teepee(圆锥形帐篷)?” It was such a silly question that, at first, I thought she was joking! I said, “Are you serious?” She said, “Oh, wait, I’m sorry. Is that something I shouldn’t ask?” She wasn’t trying to be rude, so it didn’t bother me . Just said, “No, I have a house with electricity and running water. I’m not disconnected from the world !” But the truth is, I did grow up differently. I’m a Native American, and I’m from a reservation in California. A reservation is a place that’s reserved for Native American tribes(部落)by the federal

government.

People often have misconceptions about what living on a reservation means. In reality, though, my life probably looks a lot like yours. But there are ways that my life has been different. The reservation is an hour from town, and there’s big connection to the land. Our house is surrounded by a mountain, a river, and a farm. We have 23 animals including 10 chickens. It’s not just for show! We collect eggs from the chickens, use manure(粪肥)soil, and pick fruits and vegetables from our garden.

I’ve also learned how to hunt and fish. When hunting for deer, my tribe has two rules:1) Never shoot a female deer, because she might be pregnant, and 2) If you kill a deer, find a way to use all of it.

Going to college has been a big change for me. There were only 25 people in my graduation class, and now I go to school with thousands. On my reservation, I was surrounded mostly by Natives, and at college, the Native population is only 0.07%. It’s intimidating but exciting. I’m studying to become a vet(兽医)-there aren’t any on my reservation. If an animal gets sick, you have to drive an hour to get them help. My goal is to open a veterinary clinic that will help my reservation develop.

How many of your Facebook friends do you actually know, and how many have you met in person? For a lot of us, that number is far smaller than we’d like to admit. Ty Morn, a Connecticut-based photographer and graduate from the University of Hartford, has turned that question of the digital age into a Facebook challenge of

D. bicycl

sorts. Morin has out to meet every single one of his 788 Facebook friends face to face.

Everyone has something that is interesting about them,” Morin said, “ I am trying to capture everybody doing what they love.” The photographer will take their portraits, using an old 8×10 camera, and will document his cross-country journey in a documentary.

Morin launched the project two months ago and has met and photographed about 25 of his Facebook friends so far, including a tattoo artist, a weight-lifter, a modern dancer and a firefighter. The most interesting friend he has met so far is writer and he writes a letter a day to a girl like that in the movie The Notebook and he does it on an old typewriter.

To help fund the project, Morin started a Kickstarter page for online donations. People tried to persuade him into “defriending” some of his 788 friends before the project began, but he refused, saying that defeats the prupose. “The goal of this project is to reconnect with people. No more hiding behind the screen of social media,” he explained on his Kickstartser page. “Stop looking down at your phone and pretending you are texting your BFF when you walk by an old friend from high school. Let’s get out there and remind people of what it is like to have a face-to-face conversation with someone.”

Despite the challenges and the financial cost, Morin says he is in for the long haul. He plans to meet 5 friends a week, and has calculated it will take about 3 to 4 years to meet them all.

32. What has Morin decided to do? A. To make more Facebook friends. B. To be an excellent photographer. C. The meet all his Facebook friends. D. To receive more challenging tasks. 33. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Morin will take photos of his Facebook friends. B. Morin began his project half a year ago.

C. The funniest Facebook friend Morin has met is a dancer. D. Morin himself can afford all the expense of the project. 34. Why does Morin refuse to “ defriend” his friends on Facebook? A. Because the wants to know more people. B. Because he doesn’t want to hurt others. C. Because he never cares about the cost. D. Because his aim is to reconnect with people.

35. What does the sentence “ he is in it for the long haul” in the last paragraph mean?

A. He will make another decision. B. He will firmly continue his journey. C. He has accomplished half of the project. D. He will give up his decision for lack of money. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Buying a plane ticket online is easy once you know how to do it. 36 These tips can help you purchase a plane ticket online.

First, decide when and where you want to go. The more in advance you buy a ticket, the less it’s likely to cost. It’s best to make your plans at least a month ahead of time. 37 For instance, in the San Francisco Bay Area, it can be cheaper to fly into the Oakland International Airport or San Jose Airport than to land at the San Francisco International Airport. Compare prices when you are buying online.

__38 You will pay less money for the ticket if you leave before and come back after a Saturday night. If you leave on a Monday and come back on a Saturday morning, the ticket will cost more.

39 It is cheaper to fly out on a Thursday and come back on a Tuesday or Wednesday than to fly out on Friday and come back on Monday. Traveling midweek is cheaper simply because most people do not travel in this way. They like to come home on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, which means tickets sold for those days are in higher demand and cost more. Early morning or late night flights are also cheaper.

You will need to choose whether you plan to fly first, business or economy class. Once you have chosen your airport, the class of seat you want, and the time of the day and the day of the week you want to fly, the website should present you with at least a few ticket choices. 40 Choose the flight that works best for you. You can then purchase the ticket with a credit card.

A. When you go to a website to buy your ticket, you will need to enter the date you wish to leave and the date you wish to return.

B. In the vast majority of cases, early ticket buyers will pick up the best deals. C. There will likely be a range of times and prices.

D. The sellers offer different plane tickets for different prices on the same flight in order attract low-price-seeking customers.

E. There are many online plane ticket sellers from which you can choose F. You can also money by traveling midweek.
