IV Reading Comprehension:

How many languages do you speak? One, maybe two, you say? Wrong! If you speak

27

English, you use words from at least 35 foreign languages. Want proof? Read the next two sentences out loud:

“Jane saw a baby squirrel outside the window. Although she was still wearing her cotton pajamas, she hurried outside to look at it.”

There. You just spoke five languages – counting English! “Baby” comes from a Dutch word spelled the same way. “Squirrel” is French. “Cotton” was first an Arabic word and “pajamas” was taken right from the Urdu language of India. Surprised?

You shouldn’t be. Tim Morris is an English professor at the University of Texas, Arlington. He says that when we speak English, we’re using bits and pieces of many languages.

Dr. Morris asks his college English classes to count “loan words” – words we use that were taken directly from other languages. He jokes about the term “loan words.” “It seems unlikely that we’re going to give these words back after we’ve done with them, ” he says. “Imported words” might be a better term.

According to studies dong by Morris and others, simple English sentences may contain 15 percent or less of these “loan words.” Complex sentences may be 50 percent or more “imports.” Scientific papers might use mostly loan words. “We use imports constantly,” Morris says, “generally without any ides we are using them.”

Chances are, the person notices you staring. They’re used to it. Certainly, Sarah Marks of Baton Rouge is.

30

Everybody looks at least a little like somebody else, and for people who happen to look like celebrities, the coincidence is something they can’t escape. Generally, the more popular the celebrity, the more frequent the comments, and is you happen to be one that looks like one of those celebrities, you must be ready for all the comments wherever you go.

In Marks’ case, comparisons to the popular TV and movie actress happen when she goes to work at the Mall in Louisiana, where she teaches summer cheerleading camps and dines out.

When she was a senior in high school, a group went to eat at a local restaurant, Marks writes. “As we were walking out the door, the manager ran after me and asked, ‘Are you her?’ I said ‘What?’ My friend translated, ‘He wants to know if you’re Jennifer Love Hewitt!’ After telling him he had been mistaken, he offered me gift certificates if I would take a picture (and with Jennifer Love Hewitt’s name on it!) to put in the restaurant.”

Have you heard the expression “when pigs fly”? It is sometimes used as a colorful way of

32

saying “never.” As far as anyone knows, no pig has ever flown, and none is likely to ever fly.

In September of 1783, however, a sheep did fly. This was in the days before airplanes and helicopters. Flying was something only birds did. Two Frenchmen, Etienne and Joseph Montgolfier, worked hard to change that.

The Montgolfier brothers were papermakers. They found that paper bags filled with smoke would float upwards. The brothers worked to make a bag big enough and strong enough to carry people up into the sky.

In June of 1783, they showed off their first big balloon. After they had made a large bag out of cloth and paper, they took it to the town square. Here they built a smoky fire with sheep’s wool and damp straw. As they forced smoked into the bags, it slowly rose to its full height of 110 feet (about the height of a 10-story building). When the balloon was full of smoke, the brothers released it. It floats up 6,000 feet and eventually came down to earth one and a half miles away.

The French Academy of Science asked the Montgolfier brothers to fly their balloon in Paris in front of the king and queen, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The brothers were so sure of success that they wanted a man to go up in the balloon. But scientists did not know if people could survive at such great heights. They decided that instead of risking human lives, three animals would be placed in a cage attached to the balloon.

On September 19,1783,a sheep, a duck, and a rooster rose 1,500 feet over the roofs of the king’s palace. For eight minutes they floated overhead as people on the ground pointed and clapped and cheered. The rooster’s wing was broken when the sheep stepped on it during the

landing. Other than that, the animals were unharmed.

So you think your dog is intelligent? You haven’t encountered Mackey, a two-and-a-half-year old black dog owned by Jeanette Depew of Argyle, Washington County.

He can add, subtract, multiply, divide, do card and magic tricks, guess the year of your birth. He reads minds – when asked.

When finished, he bows. He can balance biscuits on his nose, pop them in his mouth, make scarves disappear and reappear, and, just like a magician, can guess what card you are holding and the suit.

“He’s a very intelligent dog,” said Depew as she taught the large black dog through tricks for a group of onlookers at the Farmers Market at High Rock Pavilions.

People gaped in amazement, listening carefully to his barks as he responded to her questions. She looked him in the eyes as he answered questions on command.

Mackey doesn’t do stupid pet tricks. This animal is smart.

Depew obtained the dog as a puppy from a breeder while she was attending college last year. “I needed a companion. I didn’t expect he’d be doing things like this,” said Depew.

35

Depew took pictures and made two illustrated books of the dog at different stages – as a puppy, and as he grew, learning and performing new tricks. She learned about dog training through books and consulting the Internet, and has never taken a regular obedience class.

Since most of Mackey’s performances are indoors, being at the Farmers Market presented a challenge to his owner.

As she asked him to bark the answer to 8 plus 5,his eyes darted to an ant scurrying across the ground. She quickly put him back on track. He barked 13 times loudly.

Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only once family between us and the ticket counter. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants and other acts they would see that night. One could sense they had never been to the circus before.

When the ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted, he proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”

37

The ticket lady told him the price.

Hearing that, the man’s lip began to quiver. He leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?”

The ticket lady said the price again.

The man didn’t have enough money.

How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight kids that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?

Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand into his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. (We were not wealthy in any sense of the word!) My father reached down, picked up the bill, tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.”

The man knew what was going on. He wasn’t begging for a handout but certainly appreciated the help in a desperate and embarrassing situation. He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his, took the $20 bill, and with his lips quivering and a tear streaming down his cheek, he replied, “Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”

People who work in the fields of science and technology are not like other people. This can be frustrating to the non-technical people who have to deal with them. The secret to coping with technology-oriented people is to understand their motivations.

All technical professionals share a common set of traits. For convenience, I will focus primarily on engineers. It is safe to generalize about the other science and technology professions.

40

To the engineer, all matter in the universe can be placed into one of two categories: things that need to be fixed and things that will need to be fixed after you’ve had a few minutes to play with them. Engineers like to solve problems. If there are no problems handily available, they will create their own problems. Normal people don’t understand this concept; they believe that if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it isn’t broken, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

No engineer looks at a television remote control without wondering what it would take to turn it into a stun gun(眩晕枪)。 No engineer can take a shower without wondering if some sort of synthetic coating(人造膜) would make showering necessary. To the engineer, the world is a toy box full of defective or imperfect toys.

That’s a good thing for our society.

1. While coping with technology-oriented people, the most important thing is _________.

A. to know their motivations B. to make friends with them

C. to like them D. to work together with them

2. The speaker focuses on engineers in his talk because he bekieves that all technical professionals _________________.

A. do the same kind of work B. like to play with remote controls

C. can solve problems easily D. have something in common

A. travel all over the world B. solve problems

C. break their TV sets so that they can buy a new one

D. Play with toys more than anything else

4. While taking a shower, an engineer may want to invent a kind of _______ to make showering unnecessary.

A. stun gun B. remote control C. synthetic coating D. new soap

5. The main topic of the short talk is _____________.

A. how to have more fun in one’s daily work

B. how to understand people who work in the fields of science and technology

C. how to place all matter in the universe into two categories

D. a common set of traits shared by all people in the world

I knew something was wrong because he always seemed happier than this after spending time with his friends; so I asked him about it. He explained that they had just finished playing a

42

game of basketball and were getting on their bikes to head home. But as he was unlocking his, it fell and scratched a nearby car. The unhappy look on his face told me that he had come home without telling this to anyone.

I asked him if he wanted to run errands with me. As we were driving to the store together, I explained the choice that he would have to make and the consequences of his decision. On the way home, I asked him if he wanted to stop at the park and he answered slowly, “No.” “Well then, do you want some lunch?” I asked as we pulled over.

The restaurant hadn’t changed a bit since I had worked there so many years ago. My old boss Fred didn’t remember me at first but he recognized me. I was something of a superstar in dishwashing back in those days. “I owe you some money, Fred. I ate lots of burgers in between washes and I never paid you for them.” Fred looked surprised and refused to take any money, but he expressed his gratitude to me, and said it was the first time anyone had returned after so many years to pay a debt.

Walking from the store, I smiled as my son asked, “Why did you do that, dad?” The answer was easy: “I was tired of feeling guilty every time I drove past the restaurant. It’s never too late to try and fix a mistake.” I paused. “Do you want to stop by the park again?”

You’ll never guess what he said. “The values we live by are worth more when we pass them on …”
