On Excessive Packaging
In recent years we can see quite a lot of products are excessively packaged. My newly bought shirt come swathed in tissue paper, placed in a cardboard box and then finished off in wrapping paper. Why do people have a liking for excessive packaging?
There are many reasons that contribute to this phenomenon. Firstly, producers are profit-driven and they can raise the prices of their products by delicate packaging so as to make much more profit. Secondly, consumers tend to think it more decent to purchase well-packaged products, especially when they want to buy gifts for their friends. The last but not the least, imperfect taws and regulations make it not possible to completely ban excessive packaging.
In my opinion, besides the cost for buyers, excessive packaging also results in the waste of resources and environment pollution. To solve the problem, it's necessary to take the following measures. First, laws and regulations must be perfected to restrict
excessive packaging. Second, we need to raise consumer's awareness that delicate packaging doesn't equal to high quality. Meanwhile, we need to advocate packaging recycling.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Education Pays based on the statistics provided in the chart below (Unemployment rate in 2010). Please give a brief description of the chart first and then make comments on it. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.
As is shown in the graph, among those with doctoral degree, the unemployment rate is 1.9%; while in sharp contrast, for those without even a high school diploma, the
unemployment rate is 14.9%. The fact revealed by the statistics is obvious: the unemployment rate is in opposite proportion to the level of education—the higher the degree, the lower the unemployment rate.
What are the reasons leading to the situation reflected in the graph? Firstly, education offers us basic knowledge or certain skills to land a job. Secondly, higher education provides more advanced knowledge or more sophisticated skill, which will ensure us to be more competitive in our career. Thirdly, the more education we receive, the better we can handle problems and stress confronted in our careers, thus achieving sustainable development in our career.
Education really pays. Let's study harder and strive for a brighter future.
Family Bank Deposits in China’s Cities and Towns
Year 1985 1990 2000
The period 1985 – 2000 had a great increase in family bank deposits in China’s cities and towns. In 1985, the average family deposits was 1351 yuan while in 2000 it reached 34600 yuan. The total bank deposits in 2000 was 19 times as much as it was in 1985.
Several factors may have contributed to this change. (改为:A number of factors could

(或改为:A number of factors could account for the change in the chart, among which are most critical as follows.) Firstly, the family income has greatly increased and people have more spare money to deposit in the bank. Secondly, people want to deposit money to buy more expensive items such as houses and cars. Thirdly, banks are still thought of as the safest place to deposit money. More and more people are willing to deposit money in banks instead of other investment such as stock exchange and future investment. From the above table we can predict that the family income will continue to increase and that people will have even more money to deposit in the bank. It is not impossible to believe that the average family deposits may amount to more than 200,000 yuan in 2015.

Reading Selectively or Extensively
1. Some people think we should read selectively 2. Others hold that we should read extensively 3. My opinion is that...
How should we read? Should we read selectively or extensively? Everyone has his own view.
Some people think we should read selectively. They argue that with the development of modern science and technology, more and more books are published. It is impossible for us to read all the books. What's more, there are many bad books that are poisonous to our mind, and we shouldn't read them. Since we can't read all the books and we shouldn't read bad books, we must read selectively.
But others may not agree. They emphasize that today's society is not what it was. If one man has many kinds of knowledge he'll have more chances to succeed. If a man knows much in one field but knows nothing in other fields, he may be useless. Since we must have many kinds of knowledge, we must read extensively.
Who's right? I think both of them have something right. But I think we should read extensively first. We should read books in many fields, and read selectively in one field.
There has been much controversy over setting off firecrackers in the past years, with each party owning convincing evidences. Those who are in favor of setting firecrackers claim that it is an ancient Chinese custom that should be preserved. They also argue that firecrackers make festivals and holiday occasions more colorful and entertaining for both adults and children. Without firecrackers, festivals would become cold and
cheerless.
On the other hand, there are many people who are of the opinion that firecrackers should be banned. They point out that firecrackers are responsible for fires which destroy property, and for injuries suffered both by the people who set them off and by innocent bystanders. Besides, they maintain that firecrackers lead to a waste of money and resources.
Personally, I think that both sides have something right. Actually, firecrackers should be viewed as a two-edged sword, which presents us with both benefits and troubles. only by maximizing their advantages and minimizing their unhealthy influence, as I see it, can they benefit us in a better way.
The topic of Reading Selectively or Extensively has provoked a variety of debates. A majority of / a significant/tremendous number of people who are in favor of reading selectively hold these reasons to be self-evident, that with purposeful reading, much of their time and energy will be saved, and that it is almost unlikely to learn everything through unrestrained reading.
Opponents of selective reading are in possession of the conviction that we should read extensively due to the subsequent factors. For one thing, by randomly-chosen reading, people feel easier to be employed on the one hand, and they can enjoy a more colorful life on the other. For another, even the best book only contains one field of information, which is insufficient in our society.

Weighing the pros and cons of these arguments, I am inclined to agree with the idea that

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay entitled Man and Computer by commenting on the saying, \"The real danger is not that the computer will begin to think like man, but that man will begin to think like the computer.\" You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.
Man and Computer
The computer has become an indispensable part in man's life. While it has brought great convenience to us, its rapid development has also aroused much concern about whether it will one day think like man, or even worse, whether man will think like the computer.
In my judgment, although the computer may have incredible intelligence and can take the place of human labor in many fields, it is unlikely that it will take the place of man someday. A computer has no independent thinking, and therefore it can never really think like man.
However, with the frequent use of, and the increasing reliance on, the computer, there is indeed a danger that some people may think and act the same way as the computer which is programmed. They may lose the ability to think critically and reactively, and eventually develop some \"programmed routine\" in their behavior, neglecting the rich subtleties of human feelings and emotions.
Therefore, while making good use of the computer, we should always bear in mind
that it is only a useful tool for us, and that we can always think of better and more humane ways of coping with our needs or problems.
