Part 3 Reading and Writing (第三部分 读写)

VI. Reading comprehension (阅读理解): (共50分)

A. Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案): ( 12分)

I am a student living in Davis Hall, which is a dormitory (集体宿舍) here at the New York Language college. I have been living here for three months. During that time, I’ve noticed that the common living areas have become extremely messy (脏乱), and the situation has been getting worse. You can see the mess in the student playing areas and kitchen. That’s where the students play games,

watch TV, cook and eat. Fifty students share this area. Unluckily, people have been leaving their dirty dishes and food out in the kitchen. The food attracts insects, and the kitchen smells terrible. In the other part of the living areas, people regularly leave papers, garbage (残剩食物) and clothing out everywhere. Other messy areas in Davis Hall include the stairways and the halls. People have been dumping garbage there. They have also been leaving out items like bicycles, skates and boxes. This is extremely dangerous because people might step on them.

I have thought of three solutions to this problem. The first includes a cleaning plan. Each week, the people on one floor of the building clean these common spaces. In turns, the people on each floor

5

of the building are responsible for one common area. The floor students throw out anything that is left out at the end of the week. Another solution is to set up video cameras. People who make a mess and are caught on camera pay a fine (罚款). For example, for every dirty dish they leave in the sink (水池), they pay one dollar. The best solution, in my opinion, is to encourage everyone to use common sense and clean up after themselves. We all agree that a living community is like a home, even if it’s temporary (临时的). Let’s work together to make Davis Hall a place we’re all proud to call “home”. 74. The writer thinks that the common living areas in Davi Hall are _______. A) clean A) ten A) Students common area. A) on the first floor

B) on the second floor C) on each floor

D) on all floors

78. People are asked to pay a fine if they are caught to _______. A) leave dirty dish in the sink

C) have much money

79. Which of the following is NOT true?

A) The living situation in Dais Hall is getting worse and worse.

B) People regularly leave papers, garbage and boxes everywhere except the stairways.

C) The writer prefers encouraging students to clean up after themselves to the other two solutions. D) The writer wants everyone in the residential community to make Davis Hall a clean home.

B) have a video camera

D) do some cleaning here and there

B) noisy B) twenty B) Insects

C) messy C) forty C) People

D) poor D) fifty D) Teachers

75. There are about ________ students sharing the playing area and kitchen.

They wanted to learn the a 86 languages such as Greek and Latin – languages that were used in the old times, and study mathematics, science, and so on. University education was a privilege (特权) of the rich. Girls were not allowed to attend and

It was p 89 in the 16th century to complete university without learning how to read or write. Since books were handwritten, there was not enough to give o 90 to each student. Often, only the teacher had a book. He would read to the students who would memorize what he said. Tests were oral, not written. In fact, many students finished school without ever writing a word!

For the not so wealthy, grammar schools were built in towns. They learned basic grammar and mathematics, and took part in Bible study. At home, girls learned washing, cooking, dancing, and the basics of taking care of a household. Poor children r 91 attended school.

7

The Renaissance was a time when learners did not simply accept what they were told. They did scientific experiments themselves to search for a 92 to the mysteries (神秘) of the space. Copernicus calculated that the Earth turned around the sun but was afraid to publish his works for fear that the Church would punish (惩罚) him. Galileo later supported this. An old man walked slowly with a stick into the restaurant. His old jacket and worn-out shoes made him stand out from the usual crowd.

A young waitress watched him moving toward a table by the window. She ran over to him and said: “Here, sir… let me help you with that chair”. Without saying a word, he smiled and nodded a“thank you”. She pulled the chair away from the table and helped him sit. Then she put his stick beside the table.

“Thank you, miss,” he said, kindly. “You’re welcome, sir,” she said.

After he had finished his breakfast, the waitress brought him the change from his bill. He left it on the table. She helped him up and walked with him to the front door.

12

When she went to clean his table, she found a business card under his plate and a note on a napkin. Under the napkin was 100 dollars for her service.

The note on the napkin read: “Dear miss, you did a good job in the restaurant. You have found the secret of happiness. Your kindness will shine through to all those who meet you.”

The man she had served on was the owner of the restaurant where she worked. This was the first time that she or any of the other workers had ever seen him.

D. Listen to the passage and fill in the blanks: (听短文完成空格,每空格限填一词)

Last Summer I went to Sam’s school in Britain. It was really different from my school in China. Girls wore grey skirts and white shirts, boys wore grey trousers, and everyone wore the school tie. Some of Sam’s lessons were a bit strange for me. We were reading Shakespeare in the English lesson, and there were various old-fashioned words like “thou” and “thee” to mean “you”. In history lessons, we studied 20th Century China. It was strange hearing English people trying to say all our Chinese names! Classes were also a lot more relaxing and active than in China. Male teachers were called “sir” and female teachers “miss” out of respect, but everyone shouted out and waved their hands in lessons. It was more like a debate than a class. A bell rang at the end of each lesson and everyone jumped up to go to the next class. At break we bought “potato crisps” and “cakes” in the dining room. Lunch was later than in China – at one o’clock. We had big plates of pies with peas and carrots. For dessert there was hot sweet rice, called rice pudding, with jam in it. It was good that I’d had a huge lunch because at Sam’s school, Monday afternoons are taken up with sports.
