What I Did During My School Holidays

The school holidays are always the best time of the year for me! No more waking up super early, no more homework, and best of all - no more classes for a few wonderful weeks. But my parents always tell me that the holidays shouldn't just be for lazying around and playing video games all day. They say I need to do meaningful things to keep learning and growing. At first, I didn't really understand what they meant by \"meaningful\" activities. Isn't having fun and relaxing meaningful enough for a kid? But then my mom explained that meaningful means doing things that make a positive impact, help others, or teach me new skills. That actually sounded kind of cool when she put it that way.

So this holiday, I decided to mix up my regular fun times with some meaningful activities too. I have to admit, some of them ended up being way more enjoyable than I expected! Here are the main meaningful things I got up to: Volunteering at the Animal Shelter

My first meaningful activity was volunteering at the local animal shelter for a few hours every week. At first, I was mostly

just helping to clean out the kennels and fill up the animal food bowls. It was kind of smelly work, but spending time around all the cute dogs and cats made it fun.

After a couple of weeks, the workers started letting me take the dogs for walks and play with them. That was awesome! Getting to run around outside with the hyper dogs was like having living, breathing toys to play fetch with. The best part was seeing how happy the animals got with some exercise and affection. By the end of my volunteer time, I was actually feeling sad to leave my new four-legged friends behind. Coding Lessons

My next meaningful holiday activity came as a surprise from my parents. One day, my dad sat me down and told me he had signed me up for coding lessons! I have to admit, I wasn't that excited at first. Coding just sounded like really complicated computer stuff that only nerds would enjoy.

Boy, was I wrong! The coding instructor was actually really fun and made the lessons interactive with games and projects. I started by learning coding basics through activities like giving instructions to my friends to map out a trail of steps to a target.

Then we moved to simple coding languages like Scratch where we could make our own animations and games. By the end of the lessons, I had created a couple of really cool maze games and even a multi-level adventure game! Coding ended up being way more creative and rewarding than I had imagined. Reading Books & Writing Stories

Of course, my parents also encouraged me to read books and write stories during the holidays to practice my literacy skills. Though reading and writing can feel like just extra schoolwork, I decided to make it fun by choosing genres and topics I really enjoyed.

For reading, I went on a Roald Dahl binge - gobbling up classics like Matilda, The BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Dahl's outrageous plots and quirky characters had me laughing out loud. For writing, I decided to work on a short fantasy story featuring myself as a brave knight who protects a magical forest.

Getting creative with my writing inspired me to start applyingfor those kid writer's competitions. I even won a little prize for one of my short stories! Reading amazing books and seeing my own writing abilities improve made me feel proud and motivated me to keep practicing.

Gardening

My final meaningful holiday activity was gardening with my grandparents. At first, I'll admit the idea of spending hot days pulling weeds did not sound appealing at all. But my grandparents have an amazing garden that I've always loved exploring.

Once I started digging around in the soil and learned how to properly plant seeds, water the seedlings, and add fertilizer, I got really into it. It was awesome to literally watch the tiny seeds I planted bloom into beautiful flowers or veggies over the following weeks. I had never really appreciated how much work goes into cultivating a garden before.

My grandparents praised me for being such a fast learner too. And the best part was getting to pick and eat fresh fruits, veggies, and herbs right from the garden! I tried foods like figs, artichokes, and rosemary for the first time and many of them were delicious. Who knew gardening could be so fun and tasty? Overall, my parents were right that doing meaningful activities really enriched my holiday experience. Things like volunteering, coding, and gardening ended up being much more engaging and rewarding than I had assumed. While I definitely still spent plenty of time just lounging around and playing games,

mixing in these meaningful activities gave me a wonderful sense of accomplishment.

I feel like I've grown as a person, picked up some valuable new skills, and made a positive impact along the way. I can't wait for the next school holidays so I can decide on a new set of meaningful activities to take on! Maybe I'll try learning a musical instrument, take an art class, or look for more volunteering opportunities to help my community. The possibilities are endless for making the most of my free time.
