Twenty minutes later a policeman arrived. He walked into my garden and said: “You’ll have to put out that fire. Your neighborhas complained to us. Lucy, a famous jazz singer, has her own style and life story, so I decided to see one of her performances and interview her formy magazine.

I went to a nightclub in New York and watched the stage lights go up. After the band played for a while, Lucy came onto thestage in a wheelchair. As she sang, her voice was so powerful and moving that everyone in the room forgot the wheelchairwas even there.

At 57, Lucy is small and pretty, clever and strong-minded. Raised in California, Lucy began performing in public at the age of18, when she took a job as a singing

waitress at a pizza parlor (店). After studying classical music in college, she moved to San Francisco and went on to singwith the San Francisco Opera Chorus.

Walking home from rehearsal (排练) one night when she was 29, she was caught in a shooting event that left her disabledfrom the waist down. I asked how she dealt with the realization that she’d never walk again, and she said that at first shedidn’t want to face it. After a year of being upset she tried to kill herself. She was then taken to a hospital for treatment, whereshe was able to recover.

Lucy said she came to understand that the only thing she had lost in this unlucky event was the ability to walk. She still hadher most valuable thing—her mind. Pointing to her head, she said, “Everything important is in here. The only real disability inlife is losing your mind.”When I asked if she was angry about what she had lost, she admitted to being upset sometimes,“especially when everybody’s dancing, because I love to dance. Safety is very important. In schools, however, accidents often happen,so there mustbe people at school who know how to do first aid.

First aid is help that you give to someone who has suddenly fallen ill or who has had an accident. You don’t have to be adoctor or a nurse. Anyone can be a first

aider(that’s someone who knows first aid), but in most schools, the only first aiders are teachers. There are a lot more childrenthan teachers in any school, so why not teach the children first aid?

That’s exactly what we’ve done in my own school. The school’s team of first aiders now has 32 members, some as young as11, who know what to do when someone is in danger. Every year, nurses from a local hospital teach our children thenecessary skills to save lives. Children are taught what to do, for example, if a friend of theirs has a headache. They alsoknow what to do if someone is in real danger.

Recently, two students from my school were able to use their new skills. 13-year-old Mike and his friend Joe were playingtogether when Joe got a piece of apple in his throat that wouldn’t move. Although his friend was in great danger. Mikewas not frightened. With one move, he took the apple out and saved Joe’s life.

11-year-old Kim’s story is even more amazing. Her mum suffers from a heart problem. One evening, her mum suddenly fell tothe ground. Kim knew exactly what to do. She called an ambulance(救护车)and took care of her mum until help arrived. With the necessary first-aid knowledge, the students did a really good job.42.What may the writer probably be?A.A driver.B. A policemanC. A teacherD. A sportsman

43.What should a first aider do when someone has had an accident?A.Take him to do sport.B.Expect the doctors to come.C.Ask the teachers to deal with it.D.Give him necessary help at once.

44.Why do nurses from a local hospital go to the writer’s school every year?A.To teach the children skills to save lives.B.To clean and cover cuts for patients.

C.To take care of the sick children.D.To build a team of first aiders.

45.Who saved Joe when he was in great danger?A.KimB. MikeC. A doctorD. A nurse

46.What did Kim do first to save her mum?A.She tried to make her mum comfortable.B.She called an ambulance for her mum.C.She sent her mum to hospital.D.She helped her mum sit up.
