Passage 1
Ask three people to look out the same window at a busy street corner and tell you what they see. Chances are you will receive three different answers. Each person sees the same scene, but each perceives(觉察)something different about it.
Perceiving goes on in our minds. Of the three people who look out the window, one may say that he sees a policeman giving a motorist a ticket. Another may say that he sees a rush-hour traffic jam at the intersection. The third may tell you that he sees a woman trying to cross the street with four children in tow(拉着). For perception is the minds’ interpretation of what the senses—in this case our eyes – tell us.
Many psychologists today are working to try to determine just how a person experiences or perceives the world around him. Using a scientific approach, these psychologists set up experiments in which they can control all of the factors. By measuring and charting the results of many experiments, they are trying to find out what makes different people perceive totally different things about the same scene.

Passage 1
Helen was in her 60s and had red hair and high self-respect. I looked up to her because she was doing what she loved – serving people – and nobody did it better. She made everyone smile and feel good, customers and co-workers alike.
I learned from her how to serve the customers just the way they wanted. One of my regular customers was Fred Hasbrook. He always ate a toast plug fried eggs and a cup of milk. When I saw him walking toward the dinner, I tried to have it on his table as soon as he sat down.
Thanks to the newfound confidence I picked up from Helen, I dreamed of having my own restaurant. But when I called my parents to ask for a loan, they said, ―We just don’t have the money.‖
The next day, Fred saw me and asked, ―What’s wrong, sunshine? You’re not smiling today.‖ I started my dream with him and said, ―Fred, I know I can do more if somebody would just have faith in me.‖
A few days later, he handed me a check of $50,000 – along with a note that I have to this day. It reads,‖ I trust your honesty. Good people with a dream should have the opportunity to make that dream come true.‖
I opened my own restaurant and business was good. A few years later, I paid back Fred the $50,000, plus 14-percent annual interest.
I got a thank-you note from Fred, which will be imprinted on my heart forever. He had been sick and wrote that my check had helped cover his mounting medical bills. His letter read, ―That loan is one of the best investments I’ve ever made. Few people could have the lock I had.‖

At sixteen Ron Mackie might have stayed at school, but the future called to him excitedly. ―Get out of the classroom into a job,‖ it said, and Ron obeyed. His father, supporting the decision, found a place for him in a supermarket. ―You’re lucky, Ron,‖ he said. ―For every boy with a job theses days, there’s dozen without.‖ So Ron joined the working world at twenty pounds a week. For a year he spent his days filling shelves with tins of food. By the end of that time he was looking back on his school-days as a time of great variety and satisfaction. He searched for an interest in his work, with little success. One fine day instead of going to work Ron got a lift on a lorry going south. With nine pounds in his pocket, a full heart and a great longing for the sea, he set out to make a better way for himself. That evening, in Bournemouth, he had a sandwich and drink in a café run by an elderly man and his wife. Before he had finished the sandwich, the woman had taken him on for the rest of the summer, at twenty pounds a week, a room upstairs and three meals a day. The ease and sped of it rather took Ron’s breath away. At quiet times Ron had to check the old man’s arithmetic in the records of the business. At the end of the season, he stayed on the coast. He was again surprised how straightforward it was for a boy of seventeen to make a living. He worked in shops mostly, but once he took a job in a hotel for three weeks. Passage 3
As my train wasn’t due to leave for another hour, I had plenty of time to spare. After buying some newspapers to read on the journey, I made my way to the luggage office to collect the heavy suitcase I had left there three days before. There were only a few people waiting, and I took out my wallet to find the receipt for my case. The receipt didn’t seem to be where I had left it. I emptied the contents of the wallet, and railway-tickets, money, scraps of paper, and photographs fell out of it; but no matter how hard I searched, the receipt was nowhere to be found.
When my turn came, I explained the situation sorrowfully to the assistant. The man looked at me suspiciously as if to say that he had heard this type of story many times and asked me to describe the case. I told him that it was an old, brown-looking object no different from the many cases I could see on the shelves. The assistant then gave me a form and told me to make a list of chief contents of the case. If they were correct, he said, I could take the case away. I tried to remember all the articles I had hurriedly packed and wrote them down as they came to me.
After I had done this, I went to look among the shelves. There were hundreds of cases there and for one dreadful moment, it occurred to me that if someone had picked the receipt up, he could have easily claimed the case already. This hadn’t happened fortunately, for after a time I found the case lying on its side high up in a corner. After examining the articles inside, the assistant was soon satisfied that it was mine and told me I could take the case away. Again I took

Passage 1
In the earliest stages of man’s development he had no more need of money than animals have. He was content with very simple forms of shelter, made his own rough tools and weapons and could provide food and clothing for himself and his family from natural materials around him. As he became more civilized, however, he began to want better shelter, more efficient tools and weapons, and more comfortable and more lasting clothing than could be provided by his own neighborhood or by the work of his own unskilled hands. For these things he had to turn to the skilled people such as smiths, leathers workers or carpenters who were springing up everywhere. It was then that the question of payment arose.
At first he got what he wanted by simple process of exchange. The smith who had not the time to look after land or cattle was glad to take meat or grain from the farmer in exchange for an axe or a plough. But as more and more goods which had no fixed exchange value came on the market, exchange became too complicated to be satisfactory. Another problem arose when those who made things wanted to get stocks of wood and leather, or iron, but had nothing to offer in exchange until their finished goods were ready. Thus the difficulties of exchange led by degrees to the invention of money. In some countries, easily handled things like seeds or shells were given a certain value and the farmer, instead of paying the smith for a new axe by giving him some meat or grain, gave him so many shells. If the smith had any shells left when he had bought his food, he could get stocks of the raw materials of his trade. In some countries quite large things such as cows or camels or even big flat stones were used for trade. Later, pieces of metal, bearing values according to the rarity of the metal and the size of the pieces, or coins were used. Money as we know it had arrived.

Joe worked five and a half days a week. His shop shut at one o’clock on Thursdays, and it was shut the whole of Sunday. Saturdays were the busiest days. Most of Joe’ meat came to his shop from the nearest town, but sometimes he got up earlier than usual in the morning and drove into the city to choose meat. It was cheaper there.
Joe had a big refrigerator in his shop, but he tried not to buy too much meat at a time, and so sell it before he bought more.

Joe only had one piece of good meat in the shop. He had sold all the others earlier in the day. He took the piece out and said to the woman, ―This is £ 6.50.‖
―That piece is too small,‖ the woman answered. ― Haven’t you got anything bigger?‖
Joe went into the room behind his shop, opened the refrigerator, put the piece of meat into it, took it out again and shut the door of the refrigerator with a lot of noise. Then he brought the piece of meat back to the woman and said, ―This piece is bigger and more expensive. It's £ 8.75.‖

George had stolen some money, but the police had caught him and he had been put in prison. Now his trial was about to begin, and he felt sure that he would be found guilty and sent to prison for a long time.
Then he discovered that an old friend of his was one of the members of the jury at his trial. Of course, he didn’t tell anyone, but he managed to see his friend secretly one day. He said to him, ―Jim, I know that the jury will find me guilty of having stolen the money. I can’t hope to be found

not guilty of taking it – that would be too much to expect. But I should be grateful to you for the rest of my life if you could persuade the other members of the jury to add a strong recommendation for mercy to their statement that they consider me guilty.‖
―Well, George,‖ answered Jim, ―I shall certainly try to do what I can for you as an old friend, but of course I can’t promise anything. The other eleven people on the jury look terribly strong-minded to me.‖

Passage 2
Immediately I got up and dressed, stuck my violin under my jacket, and went out into the streets to try my luck. I wandered about for an hour, looking for a likely spot, feeling as though I were about to commit a crime. Then I stopped at last under a bridge near the station and decided to have a try.
I felt tense and nervous: One moment I was part of the hurrying crowds, the next I stood apart, my back to the wall, my hat on the pavement(人行道) before me, the violin under my chin.
The first notes I played were loud and raw, then they settled down and began to run more smoothly. To my surprise I was neither arrested nor told to shut up. Indeed, nobody took any notice at all. Then an old man without stopping secretly tossed a penny into my hat, as though getting rid of some guilty evidence.
Other pennies followed, slowly but steadily, dropped by shadows who appeared not to see or hear me. It seemed too easy, like a secret trick.
I worked there for several days, gradually acquiring the truths of the trade by trial and error. It was not a good thing, for instance, to let the hat fill up with money; nor was it wise to empty it completely. Placing a couple of pennies in the hat to start the thing going soon became a regular rule.

Passage 1
As all soccer fans know, the greatest teams don't always win. Their fans’ enthusiasm and their own desires sometimes help teams play better than normal. In the 1950 World Cup, for example, most people thought that the team from England was the best in the world. The U.S. team surprised everyone by winning its match. That loss stopped England from winning the Cup. This, of course, did not mean that the U.S. team was the best in the world. The United States lost to Chile in its next game. Then the Chilean team lost to Spain, and Spain finished fourth in the final result. Uruguay won the Cup.
The World Cup is called that because teams from every continent have played in it. However, since the Cup began, all of the winning teams have been from Europe or South America. Teams from Asia or Africa always do well, but they haven't yet won. Mexico played surprisingly well in
the 1970 Cup, which it hosted, but it wasn't among the final four teams. The largest crowd ever to attend a soccer match was at the World Cup final in Rio De Janeiro,
Brazil, on July 16, 1950. 199,854 fans watched Uruguay defeat Brazil by a score of 2-1. The following incidents show how serious some people are about soccer. During the1960s, a player for a team from Derby, England, was fined two dollars for smiling at a referee during a match. In another incident in Greece, a referee feared an angry crowd after a match, so he dressed
29
himself as a Catholic (天主教的) priest and tried to escape to Athens by ship. The fans found out where he was and threw fruit at him before his ship sailed.
41. The 1970 World Cup was held in ______. A. Britain C. Spain B. Chile D. Mexico
42. Which of the following decides soccer players’ performance according to the writer? A. their skill C. their mental state B. their fans’ enthusiasm D. all of the above 43. It seems that the result of the 1950 World Cup was ______. A. just what had been expected
B. quite different from what had been expected C. due to fans’ enthusiasm D. very normal
44. In the end, the referee ______. A. turned out to be a Catholic priest B. was attacked by fans with fruit C. escaped to Athens by ship
D. was caught by the fans in Athens
45. What is the attitude of the writer toward Asian or African teams?
A. contemptuous (轻蔑的) C. affirmative (肯定的) B. negative D. pessimistic
Passage 2
The basic flag of the United States is one of the world’ oldest national flags. Only the flags of Austria, Denmark, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland are older. During the discovery and settlement of what is now the United States, the flags of various European nations were flown over the land, as symbols of possession. Later, the colonial and Revolutionary War periods, flags representing famous persons, places, and events were flown in the American colonies. The first official flag of the United States was created by Congress on June 14, 1777. It consisted of 13 alternate red and white stripes and 13 white stars in the field of blue, representing the 13 colonies that had declared their independence in 1776. Congress adopted a new flag of 15 stars and 15 stripes in 1795, to give representation to the two new states admitted into the Union, Vermont and Kentucky. By 1817, there were 20 states in the Union, and it became apparent that adding on stripe for each new state would destroy the shape of the flag. As a result, congress in 1818 restored the original design of 13 stripes and provided that each state was to be represented by one star. In 1912 President William H. Taft made the first official provision for the arrangement of the stars. He ordered that there be six even rows of eight stars each. Previously the arrangement of the stars had been left to the flag-maker’s fancy. The evolution of the Stars and Stripes reflects the growth of the United States. After the admission of Hawaii into the Union in 1959, the flag was officially changed for the 26th time since its creation.
30
There are many government flags flown in the United States in addition to the national flag. Among them are the president’s and vice-president’s flags and those of the federal departments and some federal agencies. Each state in the Union has an official flag. The United States Navy uses special flags for signaling.

States.

Passage 3
There is, perhaps, no other sport in the world quite so exciting as skiing. For viewers, it is a scene of unrivalled(无对手的)beauty. For skiers, it is a vivid personal experience, a thrilling(激动)test of mind, muscle, and nerves. And more and more, Americans are discovering this thrill for themselves. Not too long ago, skiing had virtually no part in the American sports scene. If it were thought of at all, it was purely as a European sport. Then came the 1932 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York. Americans got their first good look at skiing and made for the hills. Today ski trains make regular runs from our cities to the great, white outdoors. Lodges(小屋)and cabins dot the mountain sides offering skiers the warmth of their firesides.
In addition to joy and excitement, skiing offers other attractions. It is a comparatively inexpensive sport, and, for the young, the art of skiing is often mastered in a very short time.
The special thrill of skiing is well described by Buddy Werner, ―It’s all up to you,‖ he says,
