In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches.
In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor’s degree.
Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines.
One type of test is sometimes called as “objective” test. It is intended to deal with facts , not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.

We all hope that values that are very important to us are passed along to our children. However ,that hope is challenged by a flood of pop culture messages, equal pressure, and busy life that leaves little time for good advice or reflection. It’s easy to forget that teaching morals and developing personalities at home is as important as any schoolwork or outside activity.
In the real world of jobs and career, people are judged by two standards: their professional skills and their personalities. While schools can teach skills and techniques, it’s up to parents to teach children the attributes(品质)that are important to success in the real world—patience, cooperation, creativity, optimism and honesty. Schools particularly colleges—don’t focus on these issues. That’s the job of parents, so take the assignment seriously. Send your kids into the world ready to handle not only the tasks of life but also its tough times and all kinds of difficulties.
You really can’t start soon enough. After all, children need personal honesty and morals as much as any adult. Bullies(欺负弱小者)will always be around, tasks won’t always be assigned fairly, the good guys won’t always win and money won’t always be in enough supply. Showing children the harsher(严厉的) realities of life isn’t cruel; giving them that experience and coaching them through it is part of raising kids to have courage, optimism(乐观), and honor.
Write down the most important messages you want your children to truly understand by the time they enter the real world. By knowing the specific qualities you would like to see in your children, you’re more likely to strengthen those things. So make a point of it. After all, if you don’t teach your children honesty, who will? 56. What’s author’s opinion about teaching children morals and developing their personalities.
A. It should be done by schools B. It is the job of educators
C. It is as important as study or other activities D. It is challenged by the traditional culture
57. Which of the following is parents’ responsibility?
A. Teaching skills and techniques B. Sending children into the real world C. Helping children develop personalities. D. Handling the tasks of children’s life
58. How can we help children develop courage, optimism and honor? A. By helping them know the cruelty of life and get experience. B. By telling them to bully someone in order to win. C. By helping them win all the time, never fail. D. By giving them enough money to succeed.
59. The author wrote the article to _____.
A. expose the harsher realities of the society
B. advise parents to take the education of kids’ morals seriously C. defend for the schools who only teach children skills D. show the importance of teaching kids honesty 60. What is the title for this passage?

Londoners are great readers. They buy large numbers of newspapers, magazines and books — especially paperbacks (平装书), which are still cheap in spite of ever- -increasing rises in the cost of printing. They still continue to buy “proper” books, too, printed on good paper.
There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in (以……为主) book-selling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charing Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the celebrated one which is said to be “the biggest bookshop in the world” to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’ time. Some of these shops stock, or will make efforts to get, any kind of book, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in foreign books, in books on economics, politics or any other subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes solely in books about ballet. Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books, Charing Cross Road is not the cheapest. For really cheap second-hand books, collectors must go to some less well-known places, to Farringdon Road, for example, in the East Central district of London. Bookshops are the finest buildings in this area. Instead, the booksellers e along each morning and put lots of books on to small barrows (手推车) which line the streets. The collectors, some professionals and some amateurs (业余爱好者), who have been waiting for them, run quickly towards the books. In places like this one can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old book that may be worth many pounds.

Last fall, beekeepers from states with warm climates began to report a sudden loss of honeybees. Losses were reported in twenty-four states in America. Today, some beekeepers say thirty percent to ninety percent of their honeybees are gone. Food prices could go up as a result. And some beekeeping businesses have failed.
Many kinds of plants, trees and grasses need bees to pollinate (给……授粉) them. Bees gather nectar (花蜜) from flowers during this process. The liquid gives them food and material to make honey. As the bees land on flowers, their bodies pick up and drop off pollen (花粉). Most flowering plants need pollination to reproduce.
Honeybees can die during the winter, but few dead bees have been found. Instead, the bees seem to have disappeared. Experts call the condition “colony collapse disorder (群体崩溃失调)”.
Agriculture Department official Caird Rexroad said the collapse threatens about fifteen billion dollars worth of the country’s farm economy. Mr. Rexroad said the cause of the sudden loss of bees is not clear. The number of honeybees had already fallen before the colony collapse disorder began.
Experts say the varroa mite (瓦螨) is at least partly responsible for the earlier decrease in honeybees. The mite is a tiny creature that feeds on honeybees. It may play a part in colony collapse disorder by carrying bee viruses, or the problem may be caused by other diseases and weather conditions.
A group of scientists are examining bees from more than one hundred colonies across the country.
Diana Cox-Foster of Pennsylvania State University is part of the scientific group. Cox-Foster says the nation needs honeybees that can defend themselves better against diseases and insects. 52. Some people have failed in beekeeping businesses because _____. A. they want to make more money by doing something else B. the climates were too warm to raise bees last fall C. too many bees have disappeared for no reason D. more and more people are beginning to raise bees

A. the country’s farm economy won’t be affected B. it is not known yet why the number of bees fell C. the loss of honeybees is because of the varroa mite D. the number of bees has greatly increased in the country 55. The passage mainly tells us that _____.

C. strong honeybees are in great need in America
D. something unusual has happened to America’s honeybees
