Internship report
How time flies! I have been in Chengdu for two months! As my field-work draw to close, I wanted to write a summary to put a good end to my summer vacation!
One. Purposes of field-work
Due to lack of experimental experience, I decided to give up enjoying my summer vacation at home. There were three main purposes of my practice here:
1. To learn some basic skills;
Such as, understanding the experiment process, experiment principle, grasping the experiment skills, obtaining some basic skills as the researchers should possess, and so on.
2. To get a general idea of our laboratory;
For example, laboratory work pattern, laboratory research direction, matters needing attention, to lay a solid foundation for my future research.
3. To adapt to the life
I am willing to accommodate myself to the life as a graduate student early, prepare myself mentally and physically to meet the challenges ahead!
Two. Field-work procedure
In the beginning, I could not perform the experiment by myself! I just went after sister Gai to observe and learn. Sister Gai was very patient, she gave me a lot of help. I thought the most important thing or the biggest contribution I had made to the experiment was washing bottles. I had washed at least one thousand bottles during this field-work period. Jokingly speaking, my hands turned white and I even was fond of washing them, when I saw the bottles clean and neat, I felt a sense of achievement. Of course, I did other fundamental work, such as centrifugation, distillation, medium preparation and so forth. As time went by, I could do some experiment individually, it relieved sister’s work load to some extent. In general, I was responsible for my work, I would try my best to finish them timely and efficiently.
In my spare time, when there was no experiment assignment, I would make great efforts to search experiment principals which are incomprehensible for me. In order to catch a deeper insight into my experiment, I would read some research papers to assist me know more about the experiment issue. To this purpose, I learned how to use Endnote software independently.
In addition, I participated in every week’s group meeting, it helped me to be more familiar with this work pattern. Actually, it is an excellent work format, it is not only a kind of work load, more importantly, a good way to communicate with others in the group. Acquainting myself with this work pattern will no undoubtedly benefit my future work.
Broadly speaking, I felt enriched during this period. I have learned a lot, but I would never give up learning novel things.
Three. Gains from field-work
1. Concerning experiment skills;
I have acquired some experiment skills and obtained some practical abilities.
2. Concerning ideology;
① The unification of theory and practice,
Through this period of practice, I realized that there exist tremendous difference between theory and practice. Just as the proverb says practice makes perfect! But on the other hand, from my own perspective, the theoretical knowledge is of equal importance to the practical abilities. Theory comes from practice, but in turn it serves to guide practice. Thus, the conclusion is unification of theory and practice.
②Attitude is everything,
Doing scientific research is a tedious matter, it is permeated with repetition, frustration and confusion. There is a possibility that you will be solitary when you reach an unprecedented level. When you do your experiment, it is inevitably that you will be confronted with various kinds of difficulties, you will definitely feel
stressed out. What’s more difficulty to endure is that you can only address these troubles on your own. Hence, to face the challenges and bear the pressure, I should have a big heart. Keep positive and responsible per day.
③The power of thinking,
The French mathematician, physicist and thinker Blaise Pascal in his book “the thought record”, said \"man is only a Weicao, nature's the most vulnerable thing, but he is a WeiCao that can think. To destroy him, without the whole universe is armed, a stream of gas, a drop of water, can cause his death. When the universe is destroying him, he is still nobler than the destroyer, because he knows that he will die, he knows the universe is powerful than him; but the universe is ignorant of all about this....we human’s all dignity lies in thought.\"
No matter what we do, we should not give up our ability of thinking, especially in scientific research! In the experiment and research process, I should keep constantly learning, constantly thinking to make more progress and achieve a higher level!
Four. Field-work introspection
After two months of practice here, I found I have a lot of incompetent aspects, many things need to be learned and to be improved. Three main aspects of abilities to be enhanced:
First of all, since our laboratory has higher requirements for chemical knowledge especially organic chemistry, so a severe shortage in chemistry knowledge is a big problem for me.
Secondly, I have not formed a clear concept of the scientific research, I don’t know my future road, the method of doing research. I lack the basic literacy some scientific researchers should have.
In addition, I even can't make a good PPT, and that is what I cannot bear. I am poor at communication skills and my language expression ability is deficient. To develop and improve these capabilities, I need continuously accumulate and learn them in usual life. And maybe I should be more confident when I need to present my point of view and communicate with others. I should make some change!
Five. Future plan
1. To expand knowledge storage
Choose some courses which is relevant to our lab’s research field, for example, enzymology, chiral chemistry. Pursue my learning at an advanced level.
2. Pay more attention to scientific research
Develop the ability to analyze and solve problems. Reading more research papers to fashion an efficient way of gathering information. Keep abreast of the
latest research progress.
3. A good state of mind is indispensible to scientific research. I will find a proper way to let out my stress, keep positive and enthusiastic every day. When encountered with predicaments, stay calm and seek approaches to resolve them.
Six. Acknowledgements
Firstly, I want to express my genuine gratitude to professor Wu, she offers me a valuable opportunity to do my practice in Chengdu Institute of Biology. She gives me a lot of help and conduction.
Secondly, I want to show appreciation to the sisters and brothers in our laboratory, especially sister Gai and Pei, I followed them to perform experiments, they taught me plenty of things. I am really thankful to them.
Finally, I want to thank brother Zhang, he arranged accommodations for me.
I will cherish the memory of this period of field-work, One thousand-li journey begins with the first step! I still have a long way to go.
I will be back next year!
