2015 Was a Warm, Wild Year. What’s Next?

2015 saw things heat up and get out of hand, and not just in politics.

A record warm December raised average temperatures enough to make 2015 the second hottest year on record in the United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Climate Monitoring Annual Report, which was released Thursday.

The United Nations had previously reported that 2015 was shaping up to be the warmest year on record for the whole planet.

Last year was also the third wettest on record in the U.S. and saw ten weather- or climate-related disasters that each caused at least $1 billion in damage in the U.S. and killed a total of 155 people. These include a drought, two floods, five severe storms, a wildfire, and a winter storm.

The average U.S. temperature was 54.4°F, 2.4°F above the 20th century average, and second only to 2012's record warmth. This was also the 19th continuous year with average temperatures above the average for the century.

Every state reported above-average annual temperatures. The warming was particularly pronounced across most of the eastern half of the country in December, when many places saw temperatures 30 degrees above normal and many records were set.

This mirrored changes seen in the Arctic that month, when temperatures spiked to 50 degrees above normal. Part of this warming was driven by a strong El Niño, or periodic warming in the Pacific Ocean, but some of it can also be attributed to global warming, says meteorologist Eric Holthaus, who was not involved with the federal report.

The analysis comes less than a month after the U.S. and 194 other countries signed an agreement in Paris to more aggressively counter the effects of climate change.

“Even if all the initial targets in Paris are met, we’ll only be part of the way there when it comes to reducing carbon from the atmosphere,” said President Barack Obama at the time. Still, the agreement represented “a turning point” by setting up “the architecture\" for doing so, he said.

NOAA's climate monitoring center doesn't issue predictions for future weather, but the agency's Climate Prediction Center does. That team's forecast for the next three months calls for warmer-than-average temperatures in much of the country, although parts of Texas and the Southeast may be a little cooler than usual.

As Lancaster University Professor Gail Whiteman told the Weather Channel, \"climate change means extreme weather is the new normal.\"

41. Which of the following is NOT true according the passage?

A. 2015 is reported to be the hottest year in the United States.

B. The ten disasters involving the weather have caused $1 billion in damage in the U.S. last year.

C. Approximately 150 people in America have been killed by the climate-related disasters in 2015.

D. There are 19 years with average temperatures above the average for the century before 2015. 42. The underlined phrase can be replaced by ________. A. increased by B. dropped to C. reached D. aimed to

43. According to Eric Holthaus, the reasons for the high temperature above normal are the following EXCEPT _______. A. a strong El Niño B. periodical warming in the Pacific Ocean C. global warming D. the greenhouse gas emission

A few things to consider before booking a flight:

With fuel costs rising and airlines finding more fees to impose on travelers every day, airfare isn’t getting any cheaper. Since you can’t drive to all your dream destinations, flying is the only way to go sometimes and, undeniably, the fastest. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan ahead.

Getting the best fare

Airlines put out their fare sales on Tuesday morning, making this day the best day to book a flight for less.

Fly during the least popular times. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly, which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early morning flights, since many people don’t like to get up before the sun to get to the airport. Earlier boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting bumped on an overbooked flight or delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues.

Choose your seat later. Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online, adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost. If you show up early on your travel day, you can still get suitable seats. Some of the best seats get held back until flight day, unless others are willing to pay extra for them ahead of time, so you still have the chance at one of those.

Fly on holidays. You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, and even though most other times are more affordable, the days surrounding holidays can be crazy. Save big if you’re willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Don’t wait until the last-minute to book. Many travelers don’t know that there’s a sweet spot for booking and getting the best price on your tickets. Book too early or too late and you could end up paying more than you need to. The best time to book is between three months and six weeks from when you want to travel.

Avoiding extra fees

Airlines will charge for just about anything these days. Some have even toyed around with charging customers for using the restroom. All those extra fees can certainly add up, but there’s no reason to pay them if you don’t have to. Here are some tips to keep money in your wallet once you get to the airport.

Avoid the upgrade it's not necessary. Sometimes upgrades are free, but mostly you will be charged for seeking a last-minute bump to first class, and the cost can be hefty.

Fly carry-on only. Baggage fees vary wildly, but almost all airlines charge them and charge big. Why pay for your clothes to fly with you? If everyone in your travel party checks a bag, your bill can be astronomical before you ever even get to your destination.

It’s easy to reduce the amount of stuff you pack: Make sure all your clothing coordinates, so you can take less and still make more outfit combinations, take only two pair of shoes, plan to do a bit of laundry on your trip and bring only travel-sized toiletries.

Pack your own snacks. Unless you’re flying internationally, it’s rare your flight comes with a free meal. Snacks on the plane are not cheap and almost never healthy. Don’t rely on what’s on the small menu and instead tuck some of your own snacks – granola bars, homemade muffins, fruit and trail mix all make fantastic travel foods – into your bag and eat a lot better, and cheaper, than other passengers.

Do you have a tried and true method of getting the best deal on your flights? Let us know.

46. How many reasons are mentioned in Para.1 accounting for the increasing airfare?

A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five

47. The advantages to select an early morning flight include the following aspects EXCEPT ________. A. You are less likely to fail in booking an overbooked flight. B. It is more possible for the flights to take off on time. C. You are supposed to get up in early morning to get to the airport. D. There may be some discounts in the airfare.

48. Which of the following can be expected if you want a cheaper airfare? A. An ideal seat B. A flight in summer holiday C. Snacks on the plane D. Booking tickets on the day before journey 49. To reduce the amount of your pack, what should you do? A. Taking different varieties of clothing B. Bringing all your daily necessities C. Packing your own snacks as many as possible D. Taking no more than 2 pairs of shoes

The relationship between exercise and cancer has long both intrigued and puzzled oncologists and exercise physiologists.

Exercise is strongly associated with lowered risks for many types of cancer. In some studies, people who regularly exercise generally prove to be much less likely to develop or die from the disease than people who do not. At the same time, exercise involves biological stress, which typically leads to a short-term increase in inflammation(炎症)

throughout the body. Inflammation can contribute to high risks for many cancers.

Now, a new study in mice may offer some clues into the exercise-cancer debate. It suggests that exercise may change how the immune system deals with cancer by boosting adrenaline(肾上腺素),

仔细审题、认真作答

试题习题、尽在百度

certain immune cells and other chemicals that, together, can reduce the seriousness of cancer or fight it off altogether.

To try to better understand how exercise can both raise inflammation and meanwhile protect the body against cancer, scientists at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and other institutions decided to closely examine what happens inside mice at high risk for the disease.

The scientists implanted melanoma skin cancer cells into the mice before providing half of them with running wheels in their cages while the other animals remained settled. After four weeks, far fewer of the runners had developed full-blown melanoma(黑素瘤) than the settled mice and those that had been diagnosed with the disease showed fewer and smaller damage. They also tended less to transfer, even if scientists injected some of the cancer cells into their lungs to motivate transfer.

Next, the scientists undertook the far more challenging task of reverse-engineering the process by which exercise might be helping to fight off the cancer. To start, they drew blood from both the exercising and settled animals and cells from any cancer in both groups. Then they looked microscopically at how the various samples were different.

As expected, they found much higher levels of the adrenaline in the blood of the exercising animals, especially right after they had been working out on the wheels but also at other times of the day. The body releases adrenaline in response to almost any type of stressful experience, including exercise.

Perhaps most important, they found much higher numbers in the bloodstreams of runners than in the settled mice of a type of immune cell named natural killer cells that are known to be potent cancer fighters.

Then they again looked at the animals’ blood and other cells.

What they now saw was that when running mice could not produce adrenaline, they developed cancer at the same rate as the settled animals, while the settled animals that had been injected with extra adrenaline fought off their cancer better than other sitting mice.

More remarkably, by studying the action of various genes within the cells of the mice, the scientists determined that adrenaline seemed to be sending biochemical signals to some of the animals’ IL-6 cells, making them physiologically more alert, so that when a tumor began to develop in the affected animal, those IL-6 cells in turn activated the natural killer cells in the bloodstream and actually directed them to the cancer, like minute guide fish.

With these results, “we show that voluntary wheel running in mice can reduce the growth of cancer, and we have identified an exercise-dependent mobilization of natural killer cells as the potential cause of this protection,” said Pernille Hojman, a researcher at the University of Copenhagen who oversaw the new study.

But mice, obviously, are not people, and it is impossible to know from this study whether a similar process occurs in humans, although exercise, particularly moderately intense exercise such as jogging, has been shown to increase adrenaline and the production of natural killer immune cells in people, Dr. Hojman said.

“So the mechanisms,” she said, that seemed to partially protect the running mice in this study from cancer, “can also happen in people,” perhaps providing one more motivation, if we still need it, to get up and move.

My mom only had one eye. I hated her… she was such an embarrassment. My mom ran a small shop at a flea market. She collected little weeds and such to sell… anything for the money we needed she was such an embarrassment. There was this one day during elementary school.

I remember that it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school… “Your mom only has one eye?!” and they taunted me.

I wished that my mom would just disappear from this world so I said to my mom, “Mom, why don’t you have the other eye?! You’re only going to make me a laughingstock. Why don’t you just die?” My mom did not respond. I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, it felt good to think that I had said what I’d wanted to say all this time. Maybe it was because my mom hadn’t punished me, but I didn’t think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.

That night… I woke up, and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. My mom was crying there, so quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake me. I took a look at her, and then turned away. Because of the thing I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my mother who was crying out of her one eye. So I told myself that I would grow up and become successful, because I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty.

Then I studied really hard. I left my mother and came to Seoul and studied, and got accepted in the Seoul University with all the confidence I had. Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I’m living happily as a successful man. I like it here because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom.

This happiness was getting bigger and bigger, when someone unexpected came to see me

“What?! Who’s this?!” It was my mother… Still with her one eye. It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye.

And I asked her, “Who are you? I don’t know you!!” as if I tried to make that real. I screamed at her “How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter! Get out of here now!!” And to this, my mother quietly answered, “oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared. Thank goodness… she doesn’t recognize me. I was quite relieved. I told myself that I wasn’t going to care, or think about this for the rest of my life.

Then a wave of relief came upon me… one day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. I lied to my wife saying that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went down to the old shack, that I used to call a house…just out of curiosity there, I found my mother fallen on the cold ground. But I did not shed a single tear. She had a piece of paper in her hand…. it was a letter to me.

She wrote:

My son, I think my life has been long enough now. And… I won’t visit Seoul anymore… but would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come visit me once in a while? I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school…. For you… I’m sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye… so I gave you mine… I was so proud of my son that was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye. I was never upset at you for anything you did. The couple times that you were angry with me. I thought to myself, ‘it’s because he loves me.’ I miss the times when you were still young around me. I miss you so much. I love you. You mean the world to me.

My World Shattered. I hated the person who only lived for me . I cried for My Mother, I didn’t know of any way that will make up for my worst deeds…

A. Visit a Class in Your Major B. Talk to Lots of Students C. Explore on Your Own D. Turn to campus tour guide E. Read the Bulletin Boards F. Eat in the Dining Hall

College visits are important. Before you commit years of your life and thousands of dollars to a school, be sure you're choosing a place that is a good match for your personality and interests. You can't get the \"feel\" of a school from any guidebook, so be sure to visit the campus. Below are a few tips for getting the most out of your college visit. 61.______________________

Of course you should take the official campus tour, but be sure to allow time to poke around on your own. The trained tour guides will show you a school's selling points. But the oldest and prettiest buildings don't give you the entire picture of a college, nor does the one dorm room that was manicured for visitors. Try to walk the extra mile and get the complete picture of the campus. 62.______________________

When you visit the student center, academic buildings and residence halls, take a few minutes to read the bulletin boards. They provide a quick and easy way to see what's happening on campus. The ads for lectures, clubs, recitals and plays can give you a good sense of the types of activities going on outside of the classrooms. 63.______________________

You can get a good feel for student life by eating in the dining hall. Try to sit with students if you can, but even if you're with your parents, you can observe the bustling activity around you. Do the students seem happy? Stressed? Also, is the food good? Are there adequate healthy options? Many admissions offices will give prospective students coupons for free meals in the dining halls. 64.______________________

If you know what you want to study, a class visit makes a lot of sense. You'll get to observe other students in your field and see how engaged they are in classroom discussion. Try to stay after class for a few minutes and chat with the students to get their impressions of their professors and major. Be sure to call in advance to schedule a classroom visit -- most colleges don't allow visitors to drop in on class unannounced. 65.______________________

Your campus tour guide has been trained to market the school. Try to hunt down students who

aren't getting paid to woo you. These impromptu conversations can often provide you with information about college life that isn't part of the admissions script. Few university officials will tell you if their students spend all weekend drinking or studying, but a group of random students might.

According to a survey, in recent years monthly expenses of a middle school student have been on the sharply rise. Many a student have no concept of thrift in their mind. They take it for grant that they spend money from their parents. This phenomenon is mainly caused by the following factors.

First of all, nowadays most of the students are the only children of their families and naturally get many more care and pocket money. In addition, with the improvement of living standards, parents can afford lower expenses of their children.

From my opinion of view, a middle school student, as pure consumer, should learn to be thrifty. We should limit our expenses and not to buy whatever we want regardless for their price. The habit of thrift would help us form right values and is favorable with our future development.

第一节: 短文改错 (共10小题; 每小题1分, 满分10分)

第二节 书面表达(满分30分)

To show its meaning, there could be some final performances given by some graduates, which involves them in the atmosphere of graduation.
