Tubular Vitreous EnamelledWirewound Resistors1600/1900 SeriesWelwyn Components••••Impervious lead free vitreous enamel coatingCan be supplied with fixed, adjustable, tapped or low inductance windingSeven termination styles with choice ofmounting arrangementsManufactured RoHS compliant Pb-free terminations** Check status of stock when orderingGeneral InformationVitreous enamelled wirewound resistors are capable ofwithstanding a higher dissipation size for size, than any otherprotected type; this is attributable to the higher operatingtemperature which the wire and enamel can withstand.Vitreous enamel provides exceptionally good protection to thewire element and is essentially impervious to moisture. Theresistors can safely be used in harsh environmental conditions. The Welwyn range is based on thirteen sizes of tube, each ofwhich has a recommended maximum dissipation which limitsoperating surface temperature to a maximum of 375°C.The stability and high reliability of Welwyn tubular vitreousresistors is a direct result of the best quality materials beingused in their construction.High purity ceramic tubes have been matched with nickelchromium resistance wires and specially formulated enamel toensure that the resistors can withstand repeated heat cyclingwithout damage.Connections between the resistance element and endterminations are welded; other connections are brazed.Mounting devices are available which permit resistors to bemounted by both ends or by one end. Single ended mountingis recommended for applications which do not subject theresistor to shock or vibration.Ferrules and the F type mounting plug are anchored into thetubes with high temperature adhesive.Special requirements, for types or styles not describedin this brochure, will be considered for economicquantities.Electrical DataPower rating at 70°CResistance rangeLimiting element voltageTCR (-55 to +200°C)Resistance toleranceValuesThermal impedanceOperating temperature rangewattsohmsvoltsppm/°C%°C/watt°C160547160111190516160219061603160417222535See Table 1See Table 1Typically: <+75 Maximum + 2001, 2, 5, 10 See table 1 for value restrictionsE24 preferredSee fig. 1-55 to +375190854160716067691See Table 1See Table 116081151609165160016.5Power rating at 70°CResistance rangeLimiting element voltageTCR (-55 to +200°C)Resistance toleranceValuesThermal impedanceOperating temperature rangewattsohmsvoltsppm/°C%Typically: <+751, 2, 5, 10°C/watt°C-55 to +375Maximum + 150See table 1 for value restrictionsE24 preferredSee fig. 1NoteSee Figure 1 for curves of temperature rise / watts dissipation.General Note

Tubular Vitreous EnamelledWirewound Resistors
1600/1900 Series
Adjustable Resistors (see Figure 9)Adjustable resistors use the same basic construction as fixedresistors already described, and have a window in the vitreousenamel through which contact is made to the resistiveelement by a sliding contact band. The band is fitted with aclamping screw and nut to retain it firmly in position. The adjustable winding style has a maximum permissible hotspot temperature of 300°C and the maximum dissipation, foran ambient temperature of 20°C, is specified in Table 4. TheWelwyn Components
partial open winding necessitates a reduced maximumresistance, when compared with fixed resistors, and theresistance range is also defined in Table 4.More than one adjusting band can be fitted, up to themaximum number specified in Table 3.Adjustable resistors are available in termination styles B, 4B,AP, C, CB and CP, in sizes 1602 to 1609 inclusive and 1906and 1908 denoted by prefix ‘V’.Table 3Tubesize16021603190616041605190816061607160816092025253030302732323838383.23.73.73.73.73.732423520273.21A mmmax.B mmmax.Hole Cdia. mmMax. no ofadjustingbandsMax. dissipation in20°C ambient (watts)Type200°Chot spot160219061603160416051908160716061608160989.51116212434415274300°Chot spot15.519223141476680101145Min. forstyles VC,VCP446861111141725Resistance range (ohms)Min. forall otherstyles33686109131624Max. forall styles1.6k2.5k3.0k5.3k4.5k7.5k8.1k13.2k15.4k25.5kManufactured ValuesE24 preferredStandard Selection Tolerance ±10%All other details of the electrical and environmentalperformance of adjustable resistors are the same as forfixed resistors.© Welwyn Components LimitedBedlington, Northumberland NE22 7AA, UK

Tubular Vitreous EnamelledWirewound Resistors
1600/1900 Series
Tapped Resistors See Figure 10Fixed resistors can be supplied with taps to special order.Because of the reduced winding length, the total resistance ofa tapped resistor will be less than can be offered on a fixedresistor of the same size. The reduction is proportional to thenumber of taps and Table 5 is intended as a guide. The minimum resistance per section on all sizes is 1Ωand thestandard selection tolerance for any section is ±10%Welwyn Components
Ordering ProcedureEnquiries for tapped resistors must state the following details:Resistance per sectionMaximum dissipation per sectionMaximum operating ambient temperatureMaximum permissible dimensions if importantType of terminations required. This winding style has a maximum permissiblehot spot temperature of 300°C. The maximum dissipation isdefined in Table 1 under the heading Operating hot spottemperature of 300°C, and resistance ranges are defined inthe three right-hand columns of this table. The recommended dissipations for each of the resistor hotspot temperatures applies to resistors mounted horizontally. Ifthe bore is completely blocked a 15% derating isrecommended. However, wherever possible, resistors shouldbe mounted vertically with unobstructed bore. This makes best use of the chimney effect of the heated tubeand will encourage a cooling stream of air through the bore.Allowances must be made, when tubular resistors are mountedin banks, for the effects produced by radiation between tubes.Appreciable reduction of hot spot temperature can beachieved by arranging that resistors are subjected to somemeasure of forced draught. In general, it is most efficient toextract air from the resistor enclosure and arrange that an airinlet is adjacent to the bottom of the tubes. If soft soldered connections are used the resistors should be deratedwhere applicable to limit the hot spot temperature to 300°C.Application NotesWhen cold, vitreous enamel has excellent insulation resistance. In common with all insulants the specific resistance of theenamel decreases with increased temperature; therefore, ifoperated at any temperature approaching the maximum, theresistor cannot be classed as an insulated type and should notbe used in contact with any conducting materials.© Welwyn Components LimitedBedlington, Northumberland NE22 7AA, UK
