For centuries, the body’s blood has been connected closely with the feelings. People who show no human emotions or feelings are said to be cold-blooded.

Cold can affect other parts of the body. But the expression “get cold feet” has nothing to do

九年级英语 第 5 页 共 12 页

53. What do we know from the reading above?

with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be CEO of a company. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned (辞职), and all the work of the company will be your responsibility (责任). You are likely to get cold feet about being CEO when you understand the situation.

The expression “give someone the cold shoulder” probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give the cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you, or to someone who has lied about you to others.

“A cold fish” is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone. Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted. He or she will never feel sorry for those in bad situation.

“Out in the cold” means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise—he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.

54. How many expressions about “cold” are mentioned in the passage? A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Seven. 55. If you “get cold feet”, it means “__________”. A. your feet are very cold

C. Expressions connected with “cold”. D. Opinions about cold-hearted people.

C On the first evening, the three of us were tired after walking for about eight hours. We soon fell asleep. In the morning, I was surprised to find the bag of food had been open.

“Bears,” said Joe, “we should hang the food in a tree tonight.”

Later that day we stopped in a beautiful field by a river.

We put up the tent and fell asleep. During the night the bears came again. This time they took the food from the tree.

“Bears can climb trees. They can smell food from a long way away,” said Ben.

“We must keep the camp clean. Bears must think our rubbish is food,” I said. “And we should make lots of noise, too. If they know where we are, they may not come any closer,” said

Joe.

“But if you see a bear,” said Ben, “you mustn't make any sudden moves or make a sound, and you mustn’t run either. No one can run faster in the forest than a bear. And remember we don’t have a gun to keep us safe.” That night, we went to sleep ... or we tried to.

The next day, while the others were resting, I went for a walk in the forest. Suddenly, I saw a baby bear playing with some sticks and stones. He looked so soft and friendly, and I thought, “If I reach out, I can just touch him.”

There was a loud noise behind me.

I didn’t dare to move, not even turn my head. There was another loud noise. The baby bear looked up, and ran towards me. I turned pale and he ran past me into the woods.

I couldn’t turn round until a few minutes later. Then I saw the baby bear and his huge mother walking away.

I ran back to my friends. I have never run so fast.

For the next 10 days, every time there was sudden noise, my blood went cold. 58. Who moved the food bag on the first night?

A. Joe. B. Ben. C. The writer. D. A bear.

59. In Ben’s opinion, which is the right way to protect ourselves when we see a bear? A. We mustn’t move suddenly. B. We should make lots of noise.

C. We can touch him softly. D. We should run as quickly as we can. 60. What was the loud noise behind the writer?

Santa Claus Does Not Forget

Bertie was a very good boy, but he always forgot. No matter what he was asked to do, in the end his answer always was “I forgot.” If he was sent to the store to get something, he would return with nothing but his usual answer.

His parents decided that something must be done to make the little boy remember.

Christmas was near, and Bertie was busy making out a

long list of things that he wanted Santa Claus to bring him. “Santa Claus may forget some of

九年级英语 第 7 页 共 12 页

those things.” said his mother.

“He cannot,” replied Bertie, “because I will write all the things on this paper. Then Santa Claus can see it and put the things in my stocking(长袜).” Christmas morning came, and Bertie was up early to see what was in his stocking. His mother kept away from him as far as she could, for she knew what Santa Claus had done.

Finally she heard him coming to her room. He held a list in his hand, which is much longer than the one he had made out. He put it in his mother’s hand, while tears of disappointment(失望) fell from his eyes. It was a list of all the things that Bertie had forgotten to do over the last six months. At the end of all was written, in big letters, “I FORGOT.”.

Bertie cried for an hour. Then they went to grandpa’s house. There for the first time he saw a Christmas tree. It was very strange to Bertie, but on the Christmas tree he found everything he had written on his list.

Did he change his bad habit? Not all at once, but when his mother saw that he was very careless, she would say, “Remember, Santa Claus does not forget!”

六、任务型阅读 (本大题共10小题,每小题1分,计10分)

阅读下列短文,根据短文中的信息完成文后表格。(每空一词)

A new study of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily, it is a bad thing for younger people. Puppy love(早恋) may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression(忧郁症). The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.

The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is “loss of self”. According to the study, even though boys would say “lose themselves in a romantic relationship”, this “loss of self” is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls. Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won’t tell that to their parents.

Dr. Marianm Kaufman, an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing. Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early. During growing up, it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests parents should encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family.

Parents should watch for signs of depression—eating or mood changes—and if they see signs from their daughter or son, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age. Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity(成熟) gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.
