Kuwait is, needless to point out, an Arab country, and about 99 per cent of the people who live there are Moslems. But fewer than haft of these Moslems are actually citizens of Kuwait. This is because there are many Moslem immigrants living and working there. The atmosphere and oceans are not the only parts of the environment being damaged. Rain forests are being quickly destroyed as well, and their survival is questionable. E.O.Wilson, a biologist at Harvard, calls the depletion of rain forest areas “the greatest extinction since the end of the age of dinosaurs”. Unlike some environmental issues, rain forest depletion has fortunately received significant public and media attention. Despite the opposition to the cutting down of rain forests, the problem continues. Every year, Brazil chops down an area of forest the size of the state of Nebraska. In addition to the Amazon’s rain forests, many other forests are being cut down as well. In Indonesia, Zaire, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Burme, the Philippines, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, and Venezuela, rain forests that were once great have been lost. According to some estimates, 50 million acres of rain forest are cut down every year. The United Nations says the figure is closer to 17 million acres. The World Wildlife Fund says that every minute, 25 to 50 acres are cut or burned to the ground. The world’s growing population has been a primary reason of rain forest destruction. More people need land to live on and wood products to consume. Limiting population growth may be the first in a series of steps that would limit the destruction of the rain forests.

PART V READING COMPREHENSION (25 MIN)Directions: In this section there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer.

As the cost of gas and oil for home heating has gone up, many Americans have switched from these fuels to wood for heating their homes. In 1973, approximately 200,000 wood-burning stoves, intended for home use, were sold in the United States; by 1979, this figure had reached one million; and by the end of 1981, there were as many as seven million home owned wood-burning units in operation in the U. S. In addition to low fuel bills, many people choose these stoves because their initial cost is very low (the prices range from $ 50 kits to $ 5,000 top-of-the-line models), and because new technology has made wood fires more efficient, cleaner, and, therefore, safer than ever before. One new technological feature of this type is the catalytic(催化) combustor which adds about $ 100 to $ 200 to the cost of the stove, but which causes much more complete combustion (燃烧) of the wood and therefore bums up more of the pollutants left by incomplete combustion and produces more heat. A second cost-saving innovation is a device which agitates the wood, increasing the amount of oxygen that reaches the center of the wood pile, and leading to more efficient combustion. The real advantage of this device is that it allows the owner to make use of cheap sources of wood such as dirty wood chips (an industrial by-product) that have almost no commercial value, cost as little as $ 20 a ton, and burn very inefficiently in furnaces without an agitator.

82. According to the passage, the number of wood-burning stove sold for home

use ______.

A.went up fivefold over a six-year period B.rose to seven million during the seventies

C.multiplied thirty-five times between 1973 and the beginning of 1981 D.increased by 6,000,000 over an eight-year period

83. Which one of the following is NOT true for the reason why people prefer to buy wood-burning stoves?

A.The initial cost is very low. B.The fuel costs are cheaper.

C.Wood fires are more efficient, cleaner, and safer than ever before. D.The wood-burning stoves are more efficient than gas or oil ones.

解析:文中第二段指出:many people choose these stoves because their initial cost is very low,and because new technology has made wood fires more efficient, cleaner, and, therefore, safer than ever before,所以D、C两项可排除,第二段开头就有In addition to low fuel bills,加上开头段As the cost of g

84. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.Wood-bunting stoves are safer and more efficient than they used to be. B.No factories exist for the purpose of producing dirty wood chips.

C.Both catalytic combustors and wood agitators save money in the long run. D.Wood-burning stoves with catalytic combustors cost between $ 100 and $ 200.

85. The passage states that ______.

A.many Americans have switched from hydrocarbon-based fuels to wood because the price of the latter has risen

B.some wood-burning stoves cost up to one hundred times more than others C.catalytic combustors increase the amount of pollution caused by wood burning stoves

D.agitators are cheaper addition to wood-burning stoves than catalytic combustors

而文中第二段括号内的文字(the prices range from $ 50 kits to $5,000 top-of-the-line models)表明炉子价格之差相差100倍,所以B项是正确的。

For an increasing number of students at American universities, Old is suddenly in. The reason is obvious: the graying of America means jobs. Coupled with the aging of the babyboom generation, a longer life span means that the nation’s elderly population is bound to expand significantly over the next 50 years. By 2050, 25 percent of all Americans will be older than 65, up from 14 percent in 1995. The change poses profound questions for government and society, of course. But it also creates career opportunities in medicine and health professions, and in law and business as well. “In addition to the doctors, we’re going to need more sociologists, biologists, urban planners and specialized lawyers,” says Professor Edward Schneider

of the University of Southern California’s (USC) School of Gerontology. Lawyers can specialize in “elder law,” which covers everything from trusts and estates to nursing-home abuse and age discrimination. Businessmen see huge opportunities in the elder market because the baby boomers, 74 million strong, are likely to be the wealthiest group of retirees in human history. “Any student who combines an expert knowledge in gerontology with, say, an MBA or law degree will have a license to print money,” one professor says. Margarite Santos is a 21-year-old senior at USC. She began college as a biology major but found she was “really bored with bacteria.” So she took a class in gerontology and discovered that she liked it. She says, “I did volunteer work in retirement homes and it was very satisfying.”

86. “…Old is suddenly in” (Line 1, Para.1) most probably means” ______ “. A.America has suddenly become a nation of old people B.gerontology has suddenly become popular

C.more elderly professors are found on American campuses

D.American colleges have realized the need of enrolling older students

Any student who combines an expert knowledge in gerontology with, say,an MBA or law degree will have a license to print money”以及第三段女大学生对”gerontology”表现出的兴趣可以推测“Old is suddenly in”意思是指老年学突然流行起来。

87. With the aging of America, lawyers can benefit ______. A.from the adoption of the “elder law”

B.from rendering special services to the elderly C.by enriching their professional knowledge

D.by winning the trust of the elderly to promote their own interests

Lawyers can specialize in‘elder law”’可以看出律师可以从涉及老年人的法律中获益,所以,A 符合题意。

88. Why can businessmen make money in the emerging elder market? A.Retirees are more generous in spending money. B.They can employ more gerontologists.

C.The elderly possess an enormous purchasing power. D.There are more elderly people working than before.

解析:从文章第二段的“…are likely to be the wealthiest group of retirees in human history”可以看出商人之所以能从老年市场获益是因为这部分退休的老年人是历史上最富有的退休人士,所以,C 符合作者的观点。

89. Who can make big money in the new century according to the passage? A.Retirees who are business-minded.

B.The volunteer workers in retirement homes. C.College graduates with an MBA or law degree.

D.Professionals with a good knowledge of gerontology.

Any student who combines an expert knowledge in gerontology with, say,an MBA or law degree will have a license to print money”不难看出拥有MBA或法学学位的人如果和老年学知识相结合就会”make big money”,因此,D 为正确答案。

90. It can be seen from the passage that the expansion of America’s elderly population

A.will provide good job opportunities in many areas B.will impose an unbearable burden on society

C.may lead to nursing home abuse and age discrimination D.will create new fields of study in universities

正确答案:A 解析:文章的第一段中说“…it also creates career opportunities in medicine and health professions, and in law and business as well”,由此可见,美国老龄人口问

It was 1961 and I was in the fifth grade. My marks in school were miserable and, the thing was, I didn’t know enough to really care. My older brother and I lived with Mom in a dingy multi-family house in Detroit. We watched TV every night. The background noise of our lives was gunfire and horses’ hoofs from “Wagon Train” or “Cheyenne”, and laughter from “I Love Lucy” or “Mister Ed”. After supper, we’d sprawl on Mom’s bed and stare for hours at the tube. But one day Mom changed our world forever. She turned off the TV. Our mother had only been able to get through third grade. But she was much brighter and smarter than we boys knew at the time. She had noticed something in the suburban houses she cleaned -- books. So she came home one day, snapped off the TV, sat us down and explained that her sons were going to make something of themselves. “You boys are going to read two books every week,” she said. “And you’re going to write me a report on what you read.” We moaned and complained about how unfair it was. Besides, we didn’t have any books in the house other than Mom’s Bible. But she explained that we would go where the books were: “I’ll drive you to the library.” So pretty soon there were these two peevish boys sitting in her white 1959 Oldsmobile on their way to Detroit Public Library. I wandered reluctantly among the children’s books. I loved animals, so when I saw some books that seemed to be about animals, I started leafing through them. The first book I read clear through was Chip the Dam Builder. It was about beavers. For the first time in my life I was lost in another world. No television program had ever taken me so far away from my surroundings as did this verbal visit to a cold stream in a forest and these animals building a home. It didn’t dawn on me at the time, but the experience was quite different from watching TV. There were images forming in my mind instead of before my eyes. And I could return to them again and again with the flip of a page. Soon I began to look forward to visiting this hushed sanctuary from my other world. I moved from animals to plants, and then to rocks. Between the covers of all those books were whole worlds, and I was free to go anywhere in them. Along the way a funny thing happened: I started to know things. Teachers started to notice it too. I got to the point where I couldn’t wait to get home to my books. Now my older brother is an engineer and I am chief of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore. Sometimes I still can’t believe my life’s journey, froma failing and indifferent student in a Detroit public school to this position, which takes me all over the world to teach and perform critical surgery. But I know when the journey began -- the day Mom snapped off the TV set and put us in her Oldsmobile for that drive to the library.

91. We can learn from the beginning of the passage that A.the author and his brother had done poorly in school.

B.the author had been very concerned about his school work. C.the author had spent much time watching TV after school. D.the author had realized how important schooling was.

92. Which of the following is NOT true about the author’s family? A.He came from a middle-class family. B.He came from a single-parent family. C.His mother worked as a cleaner.

D.His mother had received little education.

93. The mother was_______to make her two sons switch to reading books. A.hesitant B.unprepared C.reluctant D.determined

94. How did the two boys feel about going to the library at first? A.They were afraid. B.They were reluctant. C.They were indifferent. D.They were eager to go.

95. The author began to love books for the following reasons EXCEPT that A.he began to see something in his mind. B.he could visualize what he read in his mind. C.he could go back to read the books again.

D.he realized that books offered him new experience.

I could return to them (images)again and again with the flip of a page表达的意思是

“在我翻动书页的过程中,脑海中的图像会反复不停地出现”,描写的是阅读的过程,而不是反复/重复读书的行为。

Marianne Hardwick was timid and unadventurous, her vitality consumed by physical activity and longing, her intelligence by indecisiveness, but this had less to do with the innate characteristics of the weaker sex (as her father, Creighton Montgomery, called it) than with the enfeebling circumstances of here upbringing. Creighton Montgomery had enough money to mould his daughters according to his misconceptions: girls were not meant to fend for themselves so he protected them from life. That means that Marianne Montgomery grew up without making any vital choices for herself. Prevented from acquiring the habits of freedom and strength of character that grow from decision-making, very rich girls, whose parents have the means to protect them in such a crippling fashion, are the last representatives of Victorian womanhood. Though they may have the boldest manners and most up-to-date ideas, they share their great grandmothers’ humble dependence. Most parents these days have to rely on their force of personality and whatever love and respect they can inspire to exert any influence over their children at all, but there is still an awful lot of parental authority that big money can buy. Multi-millionaires have more of everything than ordinary mortals, including more parent power, and their sons and daughters have as much opportunity to develop according to their own inclinations as they could have had in the age of absolute monarchy. The rich still have families. The great division between the generations, which is so much taken for granted that no one remarks on it any longer, is the plight of the lower and middle classes, whose children begin to drift away as soon as they are old enough to go to school. The parents cannot control the school, and have even less say to what company and ideas the child will be exposed to; nor can they isolate him from the public mood, the spirit of the age. It is an often-heard complaint of the middle-class mother, for instance, that she must let her children watch television for hours on end everyday if she is to steal any time for herself. The rich have no such problems; they can keep their offspring busy from morning to night without being near them for a minute more than they choose to be, and can exercise almost total control over their environment. As for schooling, they can hand-pick tutors with sound views to come to the children, who may never leave the grounds their parents own, in town, in the country, by the sea, unless for an exceptionally secure boarding school or a well-chaperoned trip abroad. It would have been easier for little Marianne Montgomery to go to Cairo than to the nearest newsstand.

96. What is the main idea of the selection?

A.The rich control their children’s lives without being near them. B.The generation gap only occurs in the lower and middle classes.

C.Rich parents have more authority over their children than poor parents.

D.Very rich girls are father dependent as a result of being overprotected by their

parents.

97. The author implies that Marianne Hardwick’s timidity was closely associated with ______.

A.innate characteristics of her weaker sex B.the way she was brought up C.the traditional way of education D.the physical environment of her life

98. It can be inferred from the second paragraph that multi-millionaires’ children have ______.

A.little opportunity to develop according to their own inclinations B.more opportunity to develop according to their own inclinations

C.as much opportunity to develop according to their .own inclinations as ordinary children

D.absolute opportunity to develop according to their own inclinations

99. Which of the following is TRUE about Creighton Montgomery’s daughters? A.They did not have up-to-date ideas. B.They were unintelligent.

C.They did not have much freedom. D.They had no physical activity.

100. The phrase “sound views” in the last paragraph could best be replaced by ______.

A.conventional ideas B.good sight

C.original opinions D.beautiful sceneries

COMPETITION AND COOPERATION Competition and cooperation has been the main trend in the development of human history. But to a certain extent, the former is overtly emphasized. I think in this fast developing world, the two are equally important. On the one hand, competition is very important in one’s life. The so called “jungle law” proposes that the fittest survives, which expands the essence of competition to a profound extent. In our modern society, so many well-educated and talented people strive to be outstanding and establish them selves. Thus one should compete for his survival and recognition. Otherwise, he will be thrown out of the fide of our time. On the other hand, however, cooperation plays a significant role in one’s career. The development of transportation and communication brings our world into a mobile stage. People all over the world get in touch with each other more easily than before. It is hard for a person who is isolated from the society to have a deep understanding of the world he lives in, let alone accomplishment in his career. The way for a person to achieve success is to keep a good balance between competition and cooperation. We cooperate with others to be more competitive, and we compete to get a better environment for cooperation. We must learn to be both cooperative and competitive in order to achieve success.
