Search engines like Google make people think they are smarter than they actually are because they have the world’s knowledge at their fingertips, psychologists at Yale University have found. Surfing the Internet for information gives people a wide

ly inaccurate view of their own intelligence and could lead to over-confidence when making decisions, experts warn.

Experiments found that people who had searched on the Internet believed they were far more knowledgeable about a subject than those who had learned by normal routes, such as reading a book. “The Internet is such a powerful environment, where you can enter any question, and you can easily get the world’s knowledge at your fingertips.” said Mattew Fisher, a psychology professor at Yale University. “But it becomes easier to confuse your own knowledge with this source. When people are truly on their own, they would easily get more wrong answers.”

More than 1,000 students took part in a range of experiments aimed at studying the psychological impact of searching on the Internet. In one test, the Internet group were given a website link which gave the answer to the question “how does a zip work” while a control group were given a print-out of the same information. When the two groups were tested later on an unrelated question --- “why are cloudy nights warmer?” the group who had searched online believed they were more knowledgeable even though they were not allowed to look up the correct answer.

“We also believe that the wrong sense of personal knowledge

also could be perilous in some areas when people make decisions; in case where decisions have great influence such as important business trade, it may cause millions of losses and even closedown of a company.” Mr. Fisher added.

The Internet is a big benefit in many ways, but there may be some disadvantages that aren’t immediately obvious and this may be one of them. “Right personal knowledge is difficult to achieve, and the Internet may be making that task even harder.”

4. According to Matthew Fisher, ________. A. people should keep away from the Internet

B. the Internet should concentrate on expert knowledge C. the Internet has more benefits than disadvantages D. people shouldn’t rely too much on the Internet

5. Researchers did the experiment through the way of ______. A. discussion B. assumption C. observation D. comparison

6. The underlined word “perilous” most probably means _______.

A. ridiculous B. dangerous C. beneficial D. normal

7. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. People widely use the Internet.B. The Internet has many advantages.

C. The Internet makes people over-confident. D. More experiments have been done on the Internet. C

Driving on up to Yosemite with my family was exciting but nerve-racking(神经紧张

的). I had never been to such an amazing national park before, yet I wasn’t the most athletic person so I knew that I couldn’t stick through all the hiking up and down. It actually ended up being a fun and adventurous experience.

The ride there was definitely long but worth it. As I woke up from my nap, I saw the beautiful scenery of the all mountains and beautiful streams. The trails were made nicely for visitor. The waterfalls were breathtaking. Climbing up rocks was one of my favorite parts. Even though I fell a couple of times, I still had a lot of fun. The fact that my family and I spent so much time together all trying to find out which route to take and what views to watch really brought us closer together.

The great thing about nature is that, it’s just you, the views, and the people around you. There’s nothing there to bother you and it’s the best way to relax and enjoy yourself. Yosemite ha

s 5 of the world’s highest waterfalls, and about 300 lakes. The structure of each mountain is incredible; it’s formed in ways that almost take your breath away. Some of them are of a deep dark color with waterfalls forming; some are formed with spots of green peeking(窥

探) out. It’s definitely something you wouldn’t want to miss. Yosemite isn’t the only great National Park but based on my experience I highly recommend going out and enjoying nature with family and friends. It’s a great time to bond, laugh, and take in what Mother Nature offers.

8. The author writes the first paragraph mainly to_________. A. introduce the topic of this passage B. offer an example to us

C. tell us his future plan for hiking D. describe a national park

9. While climbing up rocks, the author was______________. A. nerve-racking B. injured C. worried D. pleased

10. According to the passage, Yosemite_________.

A. is crowded with visitors every day B. is the only great National Park

C. is worth travelling to D. is nothing but a common destination

11. The author suggests us___________.

A. keeping a good bond with other people B. going out to enjoy the beauty of nature

C. trying to protect the environment D. visiting Yosemite now and then D

Suppose you have three things: a piece of wood, a nail and a hammer. Pretend the wood is a person, and the nail is a mean rumor(语

言) about that person. If you hammer the nail in, you're obviously hurting him or her. If you then pull out the nail, there's still a hole in the wood, and the damage has been done.

There are many reasons why that nail of a rumor can be so harmful. Rumors are, quite simply, a form of bullying(欺侮). When a person or a group makes up a rumor about someone or decides to spread gossip, it's usually to hurt someone, break up a friendship, or make someone less popular. It's the same thing as teasing, only it's done behind someone's back instead of to his or her face.

When you spread a rumor about someone, you're sending a signal that the person is outside the group, and somehow le

ss worthy of friendship than others. You're making fun of that person or pointing out negative things about him or her. This can let others think that it's OK to make the person feel bad, and make him or her an outsider.

We need to be able to trust our friends, but gossip and rumors can break this trust. If you tell a personal secret to a friend, and he turns around and tells it to someone else, you might feel like you will get burned if you ever get close to him again. Letting a rumor influence your behavior is like letting someone else make a big decision for you. Let's say you hear that a teacher plans to call a Snowy Day tomorrow because a blizzard(暴风雪)

is coming. Expecting a day off, you don't do your homework as usual. The next morning, the blizzard turns out to be nothing more than a drizzle(毛毛

雨), and school isn't off after all. You get zeroes on your work. 12. If a rumor is spread about someone, others may . A. keep away from him or her B. point out his or her advantages

C. not feel he or she is an outsider D. be hurt if getting close to him or her again

13. To tell the rumor and the teasing apart, you depend on .

A. whether it is painful or not B. whether it is do

ne behind someone

C. whether it is a kind of bullying D. whether it is spread fast

14. From the last paragraph, we can infer that .

A. it is hard to keep rumors a secret B. rumors can destroy your interest in learning

C. rumors can control your whole life D. believing rumors can lead to bad choices

15. The purpose of this passage is to .

A. advise on how to deal with rumors B. teach us how to judge a rumor

C. explain why rumors hurt D. find out why rumors spread fast

第二节(共5小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

There may be times in your life when you find yourself entirely without friends. It’s rare not to have at least one person you call friend. But I can happen. 16 Reasons for no friends

You had no friends perhaps because you pulled away from people when you were going through a rough time. Or maybe you felt that a friend betrayed you, and it caused you to get som

e distance with all your friends. Another reason could be that you’ve chosen friends who aren’t right for you. 17. Before you make friends

18 Like anything else, the more you do it, the easier it will be. Before you even begin to make friends, however, be sure that you are mentally ready for it. If there are issues you are struggling with that you need professional help to conquer, work on that first. If there are other issues, like being busy, that have prevented you from having friends, you will need to change that in order to connect with people. 19

Regardless of the reason, know that you do have the power to make friends. Friendships are available if you use the right approach when it comes to developing new relationships. There are several ways to have more friends, but remember that it does take time. 20 Soon your life will be filled with them. A. It is your friends that help you a lot.

B. As we all know, making friends takes effort. C. Reaching out to make friends

D. Make an effort each day toward building friendships. E. But how can you deal with the difficult situation?
