1、The Persians wanted very much to have it as theirs. 句中的as是介词,意思是“担任,作为”。 例如:She works as a secretary.
2、In September of 490 BC, a fierce battle between the Persians and the Greeks happened at a place called Marathon, north of Athens. BC“公元前”,是before Christ”的缩写。
north of… “……以北,……的北边”,与“to the north of ……”含义和用法想同,表示“与……有距离的北边”。
例如:The small town is 26 miles (to the) north of the city. 注意:to the north of /east /west /south of … 一般表示位于某地围
之外。
3、With great joy, the Greeks sent Pheidippides, a soldier who was good at running, back to Athens to tell their people the news of victory. 句中的with great joy意思是“欣喜若狂”。该结构是介词短语在句中作伴随状语。With (表原因,理由)“因……而……”。这种语义的with多半与表示情绪的词连用。
例如:red with anger 愤怒得涨红了脸; green with envy 嫉妒得脸色发青。
Jump with excitement 兴奋的跳起来; almost mad with joy 欣喜若狂。
句中who was good at running是定语从句,修饰soldier。 4、The idea of a marathon race came up. To came up “出现,被提出来”。
与come组成常用的短语:come about 发生,产生;come across (偶然)遇见,发现;come back回来,想起来;come out出来,出版。 5、It was a long distance running event – 26.5 miles or 42.195 kilometers. 小数点读作point,如:26.2读作twenty-six point two
6、The distance of 42.195 km is such a long way to run that not all the runners can finish the race.
句中such…that…构成结果状语从句,意为“如此这般……以至于…..”。
Not all(each, every, both…)= all ( each, every, both )… not …表示部分否定,意为“并不是所有的……,并非都……”。
例如:Not all the boys in our class are tall. = All the boys in our class are not tall.
