I read a piece of news today that the richest people were paying $736,000 for watches at present. As I was 1 my head at their craziness, I glanced at my own 8-dollar watch. lt told me the time just fine. I guessed that about $735,992 was 2 from buying such a cheap watch. With that I could send 18 kids to college for four years each with the room, board, and books included. With that I could sponsor 3 200 needy children overseas into adulthood. With that I could buy 4 for 2.5 million starving people around the world. With that money I could do so much good, help so many souls and still I know the 5 whenever I looked down at my wrist.
When did our society become so 6 that anyone would think they needed a 736,OOO-dollar watch? When did people become 7 that they would believe a one-million-dollar 8 is essential. My first car cost me only 500 dollars and it still gets me where I need to go. When did 50-million-dollar yachts (游艇) and 100-million-dollar houses become so 9 to a person's happiness? My tiny home has more 10 in it than the biggest mansion in the world and I can walk on the shore of the local lake here and can fully 11 its beauty.
I pray that at some point our society says \"Enough!\" and 12 up from 2
this horrible dream of materialism. Each of us only has one life. Let's not 13 it on the watches we wear and the carswe drive. Each of us only has one soul. Let's not 14 it trying to gain the whole world. Life puts us here to love each other, and to make this world a better place. Help others whenever you can. Life is brief and no watch will sell a(n) 15 second of it to you.

Thanks to the help of a loyal and trusting friend, my grandfather gained a jewelry booth on Canal street, New York City. He once told me how nervous he was on that first day of work. He was not only trying to learn this tough new business, but also a new language.
To his surprise, the menin neighboring booths, who could have taken advantage of him, offered their help and advice. Within months, my grandfather was commanding his spot behind the counter, selling diamonds and cultured pearls as if he'd been doing it his whole life.A few years later, my grandfather took over a big jewelry store and had branches all over the city. which he had never thought would happen in his life. Standst straight and stand tall.
In later years, my grandfather would walk both my mother and her sister down the aisle to the priest (神父) at their weddings. As he stood with each of them, he thought about their new beginnings, and of the adventures and journeys they would experience together. He also thought about the children who would one day carry, on his family name.

Who's smarter, men or women? It has become a serious policy issue for US colleges and students.
8
After 17 years of effort to raise the academic achievement of girls, the nation can say proudly that female students have progressed greatly.Women now outnumber (超过) men applying to and graduating from college. As a result;,the US Commission on Civil Rights is examining whether colleges are engaging in widespread discrirnination against women in an effort to balance their male and female popuiations.
Consider some ofthe numbers at leading schools: At Vassar College,a formerly all-women's college, more than two-thirds of the applicants last year were women. Pomona College accepted 21% of male applicants. this year, but only 13% of female applicants. At Virginia's College of William & Mary,7,652 women applied for this year's class, compared with 4,457 male applicants.
In recent years, several college leaders have admitted that their institutions encourage male applicants to maintain gender(性别) balance on campus. Most students of either sex prefer such balance. Commission documcnts on the inquiry suggest that colleges could find more ways of balancing their student numbers, perhaps by offering programs and activites that attract men.
The problem we'd like the Commission on Civil Rights to investigate is:What's happening with the education of US boys? Why are so few of them applying to and graduating from college? Some say that boys are more active and thus less able to sit still for long periods - and as a result, more likely to be categorized as needing special education. A 2010 study suggested boys might do better if they were taught language arts in different ways. Race is also a factor. Thus, the gender
9
gap is even
starker among African Amencan and Latino students.
There may be no reason or solution. But figuring out ways to help boys achieve in school is a better response to the gender gap than making it easier for them to get into college later.
31. From Paragraph 2 we can conclude that .

Is it necessary for a young man to have an apartment as a priority (先决条件) for marriage? Housing has become a major obstacle for Chinese young men hoping to start a family China may breed a new group of bachelors caught in the trap of unaffordable houses.
Since early 2009. the housing market has once again become a hot pot at boiling point. Eyen with allowance and special government policies, house prices in such cities as Beijing and Shanghai are riding the crest (波峰) of a rising wave. According to a report released in 2010, about 70% of the women interviewed said that housing, a stable income and some savings were the main requirements for marriage.
According to the report, housing is given top priority and women see an apartment as essential to show that the man is responsible and can support his family.
Personality and morals are outside the top three requirements for marriage. Some women and their families hold the traditional position and take it for granted that the home issue should be the man's responsibility, which doesn't agree with the contemporary independent spirit of women and gender equality.
12
These marriage values reflect the fact that many women consider marriage another form of \"socialwelfare\".
Things may be different overseas. Social housing, provided by European authorities, offers the less wealthy people their own piece of real estate. Such housing is usually apartments in tall buildings with 10 or more floors in the suburbs, whose main advantage is the low rent.
For many Americans, houses don't pose an obstacle to getting married. They often buy a house after the wedding, because more and more people are going back to a more rational (理性的) mode of consumption.
In Japan, few young couples can afford to purchase property. Up to 67.1% of young couples choose to rent. Generally speaking, renters account for most people younger than 40.
Young people should be free to enjoy being young, without the huge pressure of trying to buy property. Society should help create an environment for them to grow up. Don't let the poor bachelor group become a suffering layer of our society.
36. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

Culture in the workplace has little to do with art, music and literatrue - what it does refer to is the shared belief systems, work environment, and behavior expectations that characterize a particular organization. The culture of the workplace includes such things as dress rules, social environment, problem-solving, etc.
The culture of an organization is more important than many people realize. Ask anyone who's tried to change or shift a well-established \"way of doing things\" in an organization and they'll tell you just how big ofa force culture can be.
15
There are things to look for in determining whether you are comfortable with your company's culture: Do the decision-making and problem-solving systems make sense and feel productive to you? Do you agree with the management style? If you are someone who works best in a creative, group-focused environment and you are working in a traditional top-down chain of command workplace, you may not be a good fit for the organization
But culture isn't all about bosses and power - social environment makes a difference as well. Do coworkers socialize(交际) with one another or is it the sort of place where people come to work, do their jobs, and go home? Are there a lot of little private groups or is it one big happy family? Is there an \"us\" and \"them\" unfriendly environment between management and workers?
Another thing you should consider when evaluating the culture of an organization is the company's \"on paper\" and \"underground\" policies regarding gender relations, vacation, overtime, and promotions, as well as other \"qualjity of work\" concems. An employee has to decide whether he or she can live with how things really are, or is willing to face the consequences of tryjng to change the culture and object to the system. Being the person who speaks out about the company's problems is the right thing to do, but it is not for everyone.
A job isn't just about salary and benefits. If you are going to feel happy, content and successful, you'll want to find one where you fit with the company's culture and feel as though the organization's values, expectations and systems are ones you can support.
16
41. According to the passage, a company's culture may not include . A. rules about what you can wear to work
B. your concerns about problem-solving
C. the working conditions that you face
D. pleasure you get from entertairtment
42. If you want to be comfortable with your company's culture, you need to .
A. be involved in making decisions for the company
B. agree with the way in which the company is run
C. workin a top-down chain of command workplace
D. work best in a creative, group-oriented environment
43. What's the author's attitude to the effect of bosses on the culture ofthe workplace?
A.Objective. B.Negative. C.lndifferent. D.Cntical.
17
44. What cah be inferred from the passage?
A.Everyone can shift a well established way of doing thjngs.
B. The culture of a company is fixed and can hardly be changed.
C.An employee has to force his boss to improve the quality ofwork.
D. The relationship between coworkers affects culture in a workplace.
45. Which ofthe following is the best title for the passage ?
A. What are the Main Concems about the Workplace?

Wang Huan, a 27-year-old man working with a travel agency, majored in Russian language, but he found his Bachelor's degree was not good enough to win him a good job in 2006. \"Now most of my classmates are working in fields that do not require Russian-language skill, and I have forgotten how to speak Russian,\" he said. \"But it's good news for future students.\"
However, teachers of the now-unpopular subjects have reasons to worry about the new polilcy. \"Enrollment was cut down from 50 students in 2008 to 25 this year,\" a Russian teacher in Shenyang Normal University said, \"The new policy will further downsize our department, and many teachers might lose their jobs.\"
22

读写任务:
The Ministry of Education plans to downsize or even cancel some unpopular majors to ensure employment for college graduates. Students may welcome the policy. but some teachers worry about and doubt it.
As for me, it is a wonderful policy of realistic significance. If such majors keep taking in many students. it will undoubtedly worsen the problem of unemployment. Worse still. it will hun graduates' lives and lead to other social probems.
When I go to college, I'd like to have physics as my major. For one thing, l'm interestcd in physics and want to be devoted to the research into space. For another, China is advancing very fast in this field and needs many t:alents majoring in physics, which means I'm unlikely to be unemployed the moment I graduate from college.
To achieve my dream, I'm not only working hard at physics but also getting
25
myself informed of the latest development in such a field, which helps to lay a good foundation for my major. Meanwhile I have to do well in other subjects, too, so that I can gain a good mark for a comparatively good university.
